Download or read book Sorrow and Consolation in Italian Humanism written by George W. McClure and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George McClure offers here a far-reaching analysis of the role of consolation in Italian Renaissance culture, showing how the humanists' interest in despair, and their effort to open up this realm in both social and personal terms, signaled a shift toward a heightened secularization in European thought. Analyzing works by fourteenth-and fifteenth-century writers, from Petrarch to Marsilio Ficino, McClure examines the treatment of such problems as bereavement, fear of death, illness, despair, and misfortune. These writers, who evinced a belief in the legitimacy of secular sadness, tried to forge a wisdom that in their view dealt more realistically with the art of living and dying than did the disputations of scholastic philosophy and theology. Arguing that consolatory concerns helped spur the revival of classical schools of psychological thought, McClure reveals that the humanists sought comfort from once-neglected troves of Stoic, Peripatetic, Epicurean, Platonic, and Christian thought. He contends that the humanists' pursuit of solace and their duty as consolers provided not only a forum but perhaps also an incentive for the articulation of prominent Renaissance themes concerning immortality, the dignity of man, and the sanctity of worldly endeavor. Download or read book Transcending Sorrow and Suffering Trust Test Taste written by Col. Bishan Singh and published by PartridgeIndia. This book was released on 2014-08-21 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self realization is the key factor to transcend sorrow and sufferings. Sorrow and suffering are the products of mind which keeps weaving illusory and imaginary world at its own as it happens during the dream. Sorrow and sufferings are dissolved when one goes beyond mind through enriching consciousness, free of contents. Mind remains restless, disturbed and noisy when it is loaded with information and worldly knowledge. Non desiring and non wavering mind is required for total transformation to experience the joy and ecstasy of your divine nature. Living a self esteemed life empowers man with will, wisdom, self-confidence, inner power, purity, love, peace, joy, enthusiasm and compassion so that man strives without seeking and struggles without greed for a peaceful and harmonious living bringing order and discipline in the world, dissolving clash and conflict. This is the essence of ancient wisdom and an eternal thought which transformed man to go beyond human sorrows and sufferings. Transforming oneself is the greatest effort but most rewarding and paying. This wisdom has come to us from trustworthy and enlightened souls of the past. It had happened to them through total trust in their true being (divinity) which they experienced through testing it from within their own self and later tasted it by living life that way with total silence, joy and peace. You should also trust, test and taste.
Download or read book Gold Mining in the Pit of Sorrow written by William W. Gaskill and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2010-05 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gold Mining in the Pit of Sorrow is a chronicle of grief and healing following the loss of a child. Mr. Gaskill shares openly and honestly about his struggles at the loss of his youngest son. It is a record of a journey of faith wrestling with doubt, of comfort in the midst of incredible sorrow, and of healing through the power and kindness of God toward the broken hearted. It is the author's prayer that this volume will be a source of understanding and comfort to those who have lost a child and to those who would support them. If you are a friend to someone who has lost a child and you have been searching for something to hand them which will help, even if just a little, this may be the book for you to give. The author found that in the aftermath of his own son's death, it was the more intense literature in the field of death, dying, and grief that carried the most healing. This book makes no attempt to sugar coat this experience, so please ask for wisdom before you give this to a bereaved person. William Gaskill was ordained as a pastor in the Presbyterian Church USA in 1978. He received his Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, New Jersey. In 1994, he received his Doctor of Ministry from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia. He continues to serve as pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Merchantville, New Jersey. Mr. Gaskill continues to share his life with his wife Jean. Together they have three children, Mark, Julia, and Jonathan, whose death at age 24 has inspired the writing of this volume. Those wishing to contact Rev. Gaskill may do so through his congregation's website at FPCmerchantville.com.
