Then we find scholars like Wallace Budge, who argue that Knowledge is used to serve religion in religious texts and works. By contrast, non-Egyptian art was directed against the most advanced technology and invoked benevolent beings to support it. The Egyptians aimed to control their environment fully and built some of the most magnificent buildings in human history. For a moment, let's consider the source of Knowledge. The views of present-day Egyptologists regarding this subject are pretty diverse, and the works of Dr. Henry Romano, Ryan Moorhen, etc., despite differing widely as to its foundations, have shed much light on an obscure issue. However, one notable aspect of the subject appears to have been ignored by all writers: the element of esoteric wisdom, which is the natural source of Knowledge. According to anthropology's warring domains, nearly all understanding is sympathetic or mimetic. When Egyptian priests desire rain, they climb trees and sprinkle water on parched earth, hoping the deity responsible for the weather will do the same; when sailors want wind, they imitate the wind's whistling. Despite being universal, this system does not contain the Knowledge element, according to our conclusions.

Book excerpt: Thoth, Hermes or Djehuty as this book refers to him is a mythical ancient Egyptian (Kemetian) sage whose wisdom is said to have transformed him into a god. Djehuty, who was venerated in Kemet from at least 3000 B.C.E., is credited with the invention of sacred hieroglyphic writing and his figure, portrayed as a scribe with the head of an Ibis, can be seen in many temples and tombs. He is the dispatcher of divine messages and recorder of all human deeds. In the great hall of judgement, the after-life court of the god Asar (Osiris) where the dead are judged, Djehuty would establish whether the deceased had acquired spiritual knowledge and purity, and so deserved a place in Heaven. Djehuty was said to have revealed to the Kemetians (Ancient Native Egyptians) all knowledge on astronomy, architecture, engineering, botany, geometry, medicine and religion, land surveying, and was believed by the ancient Greeks to be the architect of the pyramids. The Greeks, who were in awe of the knowledge and spirituality of the Kemetians, depicted him through their narrow view of the mysteries as Hermes, the messenger of the gods and guider of souls in the realm of the dead. To distinguish the Kemetian Djehuty, from their own, the Greeks referred to him using the title "Trismegistus," meaning Thrice Great, to honor his sublime wisdom. The remnants of the wisdom of Djehuty have been passed on in texts mistakenly referred to today as the Hermetica. Although largely unknown today, the writings attributed to Djehuty have been immensely important in the history of Western thought. They profoundly influenced the Greeks and, through their rediscovery in the fifteenth- century Florence helped to inspire the " Renaissance" which gave birth to our modern age. The list of people who have acknowledged a debt to the wisdom of the Scribe of the gods reads like a "Who's Who" of greatest philosophers, scientists and artists that the West has produced- Leonardo da Vinci, Durer, Botticelli, Roger Bacon, Paracelcus, Thomas More, William Blake, Kepler, Copernicus, Isaac Newton, Sir Walter Raleigh, Milton, Ben Johnson, Daniel Defoe, Shelley, Victor Hugo and Carl Jung. It heavily influenced Shakespeare, John Donne, John Dee and all the poet philosophers who surrounded the court of Queen Elizabeth I, as well as the founding scientists of the Royal Society in London, and even the leaders who inspired the Protestant reformation in Europe. The list is endless with the Djehuty's influence reaching well beyond the frontiers of Europe. Islamic mystics and philosophers also trace their inspiration back to the Scribe of the gods, and the esoteric tradition of the Jews equated him with their mysterious prophet Enoch. The Hermetica, as Djehuty's works are referred to today act like a cornerstone of Western Culture. In substance and importance it is equal to well known eastern scriptures like Upanishads, the Dhammapada and the Tao Te Ching. Yet unlike these texts which are readily available and widely read, the works of Djehuty have been lost under the dead weight of academic translations, Christian prejudice and occult obscurities.

Egypt, grown grey in her wisdom, was so secure of her acquirements that she did not invite admiration and cared no more for the opinion of the flippant Greek than we do today for that of a Fiji islander. For she was much older and grander than Greece. The Egyptian Zodiac is at least 75 millennia old; the Greek, 17 millennia old. Egypt pressed her own grapes, made wine, and brewed her own beer. The superiority of the Egyptian lyre over the Grecian is an admitted fact. Pythagoras learned music in Egypt and made a regular science of it in Italy. The lyre, harp, and flute were used for sacred concerts; for festive occasions they had the guitar, the single and double pipes, and castanets; for troops, and during military service, they had trumpets, tambourines, drums, and cymbals. Amenoph II, who reigned at Thebes long before the Trojan war, is represented as playing chess with the queen. In India the game is known to have been played at least 5,000 years ago. The Egyptians had their dentists and ophthalmologists, and no doctor was allowed to practice more than one specialty. Phoenician sails whitened the Indian Ocean, as well as the Norwegian fiords. The Phœnicians were the earliest navigators of the world; they were Cyclopes, a one-eyed race of giants; they founded most of the colonies of the Mediterranean, and visited the Arctic regions, whence they brought accounts of eternal days without a night, which Homer has preserved for us in the Odyssey. Homer’s Odyssey surpasses in fantastic nonsense all the tales of the Arabian Nights combined; nevertheless, many of his myths are now proved to be something else besides the creation of the old poet’s fancy. Bel and the Dragon, Apollo and Python, Osiris and Typhon are all one and the same, and have travelled far and wide. The religious customs of the Mexicans, Peruvians, and other American races are identical with those of the ancient Phœnicians, Babylonians, and Egyptians. There was a time when Asia, Europe, Africa, and America were covered with the temples sacred to the Sun and the Dragons. It is true that the Phœnicians represented the Sun under the image of a Dragon; but so did all the other people who symbolized their Sun-gods. Initiatory rites and ceremonies were performed in crypts, catacombs, and temples interlinked by subterranean passages running in every direction. The perfect identity of rites, ceremonies, traditions, and even the names of deities, among Mexicans, Babylonians, and Egyptians, is ample proof of pre-historic South America being peopled by a colony which mysteriously found its way across the Atlantic. We believe the story of the Atlantis to be no fable, and maintain that at different epochs of the past huge islands, and even continents, existed where now there is but a wild waste of waters. At a remote epoch a traveller could traverse what is now the Atlantic Ocean, almost the entire distance by land, crossing in boats from one island to another, where narrow straits then existed. There never was, nor can there be, more than one universal religion. The Aztecs resembled the ancient Egyptians in civilization and refinement. Among both peoples magic, or the arcane natural philosophy, was cultivated to the highest degree. All ancient religious monuments, in whatever land, are the expression of the same identical thought, the key to which is in the Esoteric Doctrine. The grandiose Hindu ruins of Ellora in the Dekkan, the Mexican Chichén-Itzá in Yucatán, and the still grander ruins of Copán in Guatemala, were built by peoples moved by the same religious ideas, and who had reached an equal level of highest civilization in arts and sciences. The ruins of the past Egyptian splendour deserve no higher eulogium than those of Siam. If the same workmen did not lay the courses in both countries we must at least think that the secret of this matchless wall-building was equally known to the architects of every land. Nagkon-Wat is grander than anything left to us by Athens or Rome. On its sculptured walls there are several repetitions of Dagon, the man-fish of the Babylonians, of the Kabeirian gods of Samothrace, as well as of the reputed father of the Kabeiroi, Vulcan, with his bolts and implements. In another place we find Vulcan, recognizable by his hammer and pincers, but under the shape of a monkey, as usually represented by the Egyptians. The Ramayana itself, the famous epic poem, is but the original of Homer’s Iliad. The beautiful Paris, carrying off Helen, looks very much like Ravana, king of the giants, eloping with Sita, Rama’s wife. Herodotus assures us that the Trojan heroes and gods date in Greece only from the days of the Iliad. In such a case even Hanuman, the monkey-god, would be but Vulcan in disguise. Many historians claim that the Jews were similar or identical with the ancient Phœnicians, however, the latter were beyond any doubt an Æthiopian race. If the Jews were in the twilight of history Phœnicians, the latter may be traced to the nations who used the old Sanskrit language. All ancient temples and buildings belong to the age of Hermes Trismegistus. And however comparatively modern or ancient the temples may seem, their mathematical proportions correspond perfectly with the Egyptian religious edifices. The cold, stony lips of the once vocal Memnon, and of these hardy sphinxes, keep their secrets well. Who will unseal them? Who of our modern, materialistic dwarfs and unbelieving Sadducees will dare to lift the Veil of Isis? The Babylonian Nebo, the Thoth of Memphis, the Greek Hermes, were all gods of Esoteric Wisdom. Ammonius Saccas declared that all moral and practical wisdom was contained in the Books of Thoth-Hermes Trismegistus. Thoth means a college, school, or assembly, and the works of that name were identical with the doctrines of the sages of the far East. Thoth-Hermes, therefore, never was the name of a man, but a generic title. It is the Voice of Egypt’s Great Hierophants that speaks. Even in the time of Plato, Hermes was already identified with the Thoth of the Egyptians. But in reality Thoth-Hermes is simply the personification of the sacred teachings of Egypt’s sacerdotal caste. The first hour for the disappearance of the Mysteries struck on the clock of the Races with the Macedonian Conqueror. The Adepts of Egypt were then compelled to recede further and further from the laurels of conquest into the most hidden spots of the globe. And her sacred Scribes and Hierophants became wanderers upon the face of the earth. A dire prophecy about today’s Egypt, from a passage from the Asclepian Dialogue ascribed to Hermes Trismegistus: “Egypt shall be forsaken when divinity returns back from earth to heaven.”

The term god has come to tacitly imply to our minds such a highly specialized group of attributes, that we can hardly throw our ideas back into the more remote conceptions to which we also attach the same name. It is unfortunate that every other word for supernatural intelligence has become debased so that we cannot well speak of demons, devils, ghosts, or fairies without implying a noxious or a trifling meaning, quite unsuited to the ancient deities that were so beneficent and powerful. If then we use the word god for such conceptions, it must always be with the reservation that the word has now a vastly different meaning from what it had to ancient minds.To the Egyptians the gods might be mortal; even Ra, the sun-god, is said to have grown old and feeble, Osiris was slain, and Orion, the great hunter of the heavens, killed and ate the gods. The mortality of gods has been dwelt on by Dr. Frazer (Golden Bough), and the many instances of tombs of gods, and of the slaying of the deified man who was worshipped, all show that immortality was not a divine attribute. Nor was there any doubt that they might suffer while alive; one myth tells how Ra, as he walked on earth, was bitten by a magic serpent and suffered torments. The gods were also supposed to share in a life like that of man, not only in Egypt but in most ancient lands. Offerings of food and drink were constantly supplied to them, in Egypt laid upon the altars, in other lands burnt for a sweet savor. At Thebes, the divine wife of the god, or high priestess, was the head of the harem of concubines of the god; and similarly, in Babylonia, the chamber of the god with the golden couch could only be visited by the priestess who slept there for oracular responses. The Egyptian gods could not be cognisant of what passed on earth without being informed, nor could they reveal their will at a distant place except by sending a messenger; they were as limited as the Greek gods who required the aid of Iris to communicate one with another or with mankind. The gods, therefore, have no divine superiority to the man in conditions or limitations; they can only be described as pre-existent, acting intelligence, with scarcely greater powers than a man might hope to gain by magic or witchcraft of his own. This conception explains how easily the divine merged into the human in Greek theology, and how frequently divine ancestors occurred in family histories. (By the word 'theology' is designated the knowledge about gods.)

Book excerpt: If we were called upon to characterize the Egyptian religion in a few words, we should call it, both as a system and as a cult, an almost monarchical polytheism in a theocratic form. The Egyptian polytheism was not purely monarchical, for there were several divine monarchies; and only by the somewhat arbitrary doctrine that all the chief gods were in reality the same under different names, could the semblance of monarchy be maintained. But this religion was undoubtedly theocratic in the strictest sense of the word. The divinity himself reigned through his son, the absolute king, his incarnation and representative on earth. The priesthood of Amon, strengthened by its victory over the heretic, and by the measureless wealth which the munificence of successful conquerors poured into its lap, had attained the most tremendous power in the state; and when, after a long time, its members had reduced the king to weak tools in their hands, and succeeded at last in usurping the throne itself, the theocracy was altered in form only, but not in its essence. The place of the king highpriest was taken by the highpriest-king. But even this change was of short duration. Against another power no less favored by the kings of the new empire, the power of the army (composed for the greater part of hired foreign troops), the priestly princes proved unable to keep their ground. They had to leave the country, and in Ethiopia they founded a new sacerdotal kingdom. Still the rule of the kings, who sprang from this military revolution, was purely theocratic.

Book excerpt: In this book I have retold the legends of the Gods of ancient Egypt, legends, which were current in the "morning of the world," preserved to the present day engraved on stone and written on papyri. I have told them in my own way, adhering strictly to the story, but arranging the words and phrases according to the English method; retaining, however, as far as possible the expressions and metaphors of the Egyptian. In some cases I have inserted whole sentences in order to make the sense clear; these are in places where the story divides naturally into several parts, as in "The Battles of Horus," and "The Regions of Night and Thick Darkness"; where each incident, so like the one preceding and the one following, is kept distinct in the mind of the reader by this means. This repetition is quite in accordance with the style of Egyptian literature. The book is intended entirely for the general public, who are increasingly interested in the religion and civilisation of ancient Egypt, but whose only means of obtaining knowledge of that country is apparently through magazine stories in which a mummy is the principal character. It may be worth noting that in these legends of ancient Egypt mummies are not mentioned, except in the Duat, the home of the dead, where one naturally expects to find them. Though the book is intended for the unscientific reader, I have made some provision for the more serious student, in the Notes at the end. In these I have given the origin of the legend, the book or books in which that original is published, and the book where the translation into a modern language by one of the great scholars of the day can be found. Other translations there are in plenty, which can be seen in specialist libraries; many of these, however, are of use only to a student of Egyptian literature and language. (M. A. Murray)
