Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Divina Commedia, And, Canzoniere, Vol. 1 of 5 So bitter 'tis, death's self were little more; But that the good there found I may display, I'll tell what else 'twas given me to explore. How I there entered, can I not well say, So sleep-opprest was I in that same hour When from the true path thus I went astray. But when I reached a point 'bove which did tower A mount, where to its end that valley drew, Which pierced my heart with terror's torturing power, I looked on high, and lo 1 its slopes to view '5 Came clothed with brightness from that planet's ray Which for all others ordereth path most true. V. 1.--"Like him who came to Clymene," &c. Clymene was the mother of Phaeton by Apollo. The youth had been told by one of his companions that he was not really the son of the god; who, in order to satisfy him, allowed him to drive the chariot of the Sun, with the mischievous results so well known. V. 46.--"As erst Hippolytus from Athens fled." Chased by the false accusations of Phsedra. V. 70-72.--" The place of refuge where thou first may'st dwell Shall be the mighty Lombards courtesy, Who on the Ladder bears the Eagle well." Verona; where Dante was hospitably received, on two different occasions, by the Scaligers, whose escutcheon bore an eagle on a ladder; in Italian, scala. First, in March, 1302, when he was exiled from Florence, he at once took refuge with "the mighty Lombard" at this time, Cangrande was only eleven years old, and his eldest brother, Bartolommeo, governed Verona. The second occasion was from 1314 to 1318; and it was during this sojourn that he wrote his celebrated letter to Cangrande, then in the height of his glory, dedicating the Paradiso to him, as he had already dedicated the other two parts respectively to Uguccione della Faggiola and Moroello Malaspina. In this curious letter he says that he wishes the title-page of his work to be thus: " Here begins the Commedia of Dante Alighieri, Florentine in birth, not in morals." From this time, as long as he was at Verona, he always showed each canto to Cangrande, as it was finished, before any one else saw it: and afterwards, when he went to Ravenna, he sent him the work in packets of six or eight cantos at once, till he came to the twentieth. Then, either because political differences had rather cooled his friendship for Cangrande, or from some other...

Book La Divina Commedia Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book La Divina Commedia Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Dante Alighieri and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from La Divina Commedia, Vol. 1 This work, the first annotated edition of the Italian text of the Divine Comedy published in America, is intended primarily for the general literary public, though adapted also to academic use. I have aimed to make it so complete that readers will need, for the comprehension of the poem, no other book save their dictionary; but to those (may they be many!) Who may be led to push their inquiry further, a great abundance of bibliographical suggestion has been offered. Remembering how often the Commedia is read and enjoyed by persons whose Italian equipment is scanty, I have explained in the notes many words and forms that present no difficulty to the experienced student. Ou the other hand, I have endeavored, by discarding a vast accumulation of interesting but unnecessary erudition, so to curtail the annotation that the reader's attention shall not be 'constantly distracted from the text. This alleviation has been facilitated by the relegation of all lengthy dis cussions and involved explanations to the arguments that precede the several cantos. In my interpretation I have tried to give the 'allegorical and true meaning, ' as Dante calls it, the place it de serves, but seldom receives, beside the literal. The text here printed is based on the latest edition of Moore's Oxford Dante; I have, however, not neglected the recent investigations of other scholars. The punctuation has been made to conform, as far as possible, to modern English standards. I am under obligations to all the author ities cited in the following pages. For many notes I owe a particular debt to qaca's edition and to Norton's translation of the poem. It gives me pleasure to acknowledge also the special benefit I have derived from the works of Moore, Toynbee, Gardner, Del Lungo, Novati, D' Ovidio, Zingarelli, Flamini, and Vossler.
