Book Processing and Utilization of Wet Flue Gas Desulfurization Material

Download or read book Processing and Utilization of Wet Flue Gas Desulfurization Material written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cooperative Power's Coal Creek Station (CCS) became fully operational in 1981. The two 550-MW units at CCS burn North Dakota lignite. The resulting by-products are fly ash, bottom ash, and wet FGD material. Although disposal of the coal combustion by-products (CCBs) was included in the original site plant at CCS, even early on, consideration was given to utilization of the fly ash as a mineral admixture for concrete and as a partial sorbent replacement for the wet scrubbing system. CCS fly ash has been successfully marketed into North Dakota, Minnesota, and the surrounding region as a construction material that is environmentally benign, highly consistent, and an excellent performer in numerous construction applications. Attempts to use CCS fly ash as part of the scrubbing medium in the wet scrubbing system at the site were not as successful as first hoped, primarily due to the abrasive nature of the fly ash. Currently, CCS scrubbers use lime as the scrubbing medium for SO2 removal. CCS's efforts to market its fly ash have been successful, so with increased awareness of the economic advantages of by-product utilization, the favorable US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulatory determination that CCBs are not hazardous, and the improved understanding of potential local and regional markets, Cooperative Power has taken additional steps to investigate the processing and utilization of its wet FGD material. These steps are discussed.

Book Chemical Fixation of Flue Gas Desulfurization Sludges and Fly Ash

Download or read book Chemical Fixation of Flue Gas Desulfurization Sludges and Fly Ash written by PL. Bishop and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study is under way to investigate the heavy metal binding mechanisms in solidified/stabilized high sulfur coal fly ash and flue gas desulfurization (FGD) sludges. Fly ash and sludge from a typical wet FGD process and dry flue gas desulfurization by-product from a demonstration lime injection multistage burner (LIMB) process are being evaluated. The latter material contains substantial portions of available lime and may prove amenable as a solidifying agent with the fly ash. This paper describes initial results on the waste characterization, solidified/stabilized waste form formulation, and influence of liquid/solid ratio on metal leaching from the waste forms.

This book was released on 2013-06-10 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthropogenic sulfur dioxide (SO2) is principally the product of energy conversion through combustion of fossil fuel sources. This pollutant causes acidic rain and can also be harmful for human health. Many means for controlling sulfur dioxide emission are available in the market and have been extensively applied. Among these techniques, wet flue gas desulfurization is one of the most widely used methods because of its reliability and high efficiency. Nonetheless, high energy and water consumption are among its principal drawbacks. Limestone dissolution has been accounted as one of the main controlling steps of the process (). Even though limestone is dissolved in acidic media in many industrial processes worldwide, no commonly accepted mathematical models exist for the dissolution kinetics at the moment. The reasons for the contradictory results in literature dwell, at least to considerable extent, from the varying influence of mass transfer limitations and the influence of CO2 on the pH. Experimental equipment and a methodology for evaluating the kinetic regime of a high grade limestone commercially used for desulfurization was developed in the current study. The results show that the kinetic regime, necessary to properly characterize the dissolution rate, can be reached even with small particle size and high temperatures with the help of severe agitation to overcome solid-liquid mass transfer and powerful purging to minimize the influence of carbonic acid on the pH. The method can be directly applied for investigating and comparing the reactivities of various limestone samples for industrial purposes.

Book Coal Fly Ash Beneficiation

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book deals with various, very significant topics of coal fly ash beneficiation, such as treatment of acid mine drainage with coal fly ash, toxic metal adsorption using coal fly ash, recovery of metals from coal fly ash and phytoreclamation of abandoned acid mine drainage site after treatment with coal fly ash, the status of research in coal fly ash utilization and applications and some other related topics in this growing and increasingly important research area. Overall, coal fly ash beneficiation has come to assume an important role in most areas of waste management research today. Continued growth and emphasis on scientific research is expected in all areas of waste management and conversion of waste to wealth technologies.

The main topics were air, ground water and surface water pollution; emission sources, atmospheric chemistry, deposition processes and effects; disturbance of nitrogen cycles, critical loads and levels; assessments, policy development and evaluation; target groups and abatement techniques; and new approaches leading to an integrated abatement strategy. The peer-reviewed papers from the Conference presented in this volume will provide readers with a comprehensive review of the transport, deposition and impact on ecosystems of nitrogen.
