Book The Boiling River

Download or read book The Boiling River written by Andrés Ruzo and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-02-16 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this exciting adventure mixed with amazing scientific study, a young, exuberant explorer and geoscientist journeys deep into the Amazon—where rivers boil and legends come to life. When Andrés Ruzo was just a small boy in Peru, his grandfather told him the story of a mysterious legend: There is a river, deep in the Amazon, which boils as if a fire burns below it. Twelve years later, Ruzo—now a geoscientist—hears his aunt mention that she herself had visited this strange river. Determined to discover if the boiling river is real, Ruzo sets out on a journey deep into the Amazon. What he finds astounds him: In this long, wide, and winding river, the waters run so hot that locals brew tea in them; small animals that fall in are instantly cooked. As he studies the river, Ruzo faces challenges more complex than he had ever imaged. The Boiling River follows this young explorer as he navigates a tangle of competing interests—local shamans, illegal cattle farmers and loggers, and oil companies. This true account reads like a modern-day adventure, complete with extraordinary characters, captivating plot twists, and jaw-dropping details—including stunning photographs and a never-before-published account about this incredible natural wonder. Ultimately, though, The Boiling River is about a man trying to understand the moral obligation that comes with scientific discovery —to protect a sacred site from misuse, neglect, and even from his own discovery.

Book excerpt: Since its discovery by Europeans in 1500, explorers, visionaries, soldiers of fortune, men of God, scientists, and slavers have been drawn to the legendary Amazon. The River Sea is a sweeping chronicle of those brave and hardy souls, ranging from the Spanish seafarer Vicente Pinzón, who discovered the river, to contemporary heroes and heroines, like Sister Dorothy Stang and Chico Mendes, whose efforts to save the rain forest cost them their lives. Among the vast cast of characters who people this drama of the Amazon are Francisco de Orellana, the first European to traverse the river from the Andes to the sea; the fiery priest Bartolomé de las Casas, defender of the indigenous peoples; the great scientist explorers Alexander von Humboldt and Alfred Russel Wallace; the madman and psychopath Lope de Aguirre; and the Peruvian Evangeline, Isabel Godin, who in 1769 crossed the continent, braving the terrors of the jungles to reunite with her husband, whom she had not seen in twenty years. The River Sea is a compelling account of five centuries of the history, the myths, and the legends of Río Amazonas, the most exotic and fascinating locale on earth.

Book excerpt: The acclaimed author of Labyrinth of Ice charts the legendary sixteenth-century adventurer’s death-defying navigation of the Amazon River. In 1541, Spanish conquistador Gonzalo Pizarro and his lieutenant Francisco Orellana searched for La Canela, South America’s rumored Land of Cinnamon, and the fabled El Dorado, “the golden man.” Quickly, the enormous expedition of mercenaries, enslaved natives, horses, and hunting dogs were decimated through disease, starvation, and attacks in the jungle. Hopelessly lost in the swampy labyrinth, Pizarro and Orellana made the fateful decision to separate. While Pizarro eventually returned home in rags, Orellana and fifty-seven men continued into the unknown reaches of the mighty Amazon jungle and river. Theirs would be the greater glory. Interweaving historical accounts with newly uncovered details, Levy reconstructs Orellana’s journey as the first European to navigate the world’s largest river. Every twist and turn of the powerful Amazon holds new wonders and the risk of death. Levy gives a long-overdue account of the Amazon’s people—some offering sustenance and guidance, others hostile, subjecting the invaders to gauntlets of unremitting attacks and signs of terrifying rituals. Violent and beautiful, noble and tragic, River of Darkness is riveting history and breathtaking adventure that will sweep readers on a voyage unlike any other. Praise for Buddy Levy and River of Darkness “In River of Darkness, Buddy Levy recounts Orellana’s headlong dash down the Amazon. Like Mr. Levy’s last book, Conquistador, about the conquest of Mexico, River of Darkness presents a fast-moving tale of triumph over seemingly insurmountable odds. . . . Though impromptu, the expedition was one of the most amazing adventures of all time.” —Wall Street Journal “An exciting, well-plotted excursion down the Amazon River with the early Spanish conquistador. . . . [A] richly textured account of the rogue, rebel and visionary whose discovery still resonates today.” —Kirkus Reviews “A rollicking adventure . . . Levy successfully conveys the Amazon’s power and majesty, while shedding light on the futility of humanity’s attempt to tame it.” —The A.V. Club

Download or read book Travels on the Amazon written by Alfred Russel Wallace and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2021-05-19 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Travels on the Amazon presents adventurous chronicles of Alfred Russel Wallace's travels to the Amazon rainforests of Brazil in South America. Inspired by the travelogues of earlier and contemporary traveling naturalists, including Charles Darwin and specifically William Henry Edwards, Wallace was determined to go on an expedition abroad as a naturalist. In 1848, he and Henry Bates left for Brazil. They intended to gather insects and other animal specimens in the Amazon Rainforest for their private collections. They wanted to sell the duplicates to museums and collectors in Britain to fund the trip. Wallace also hoped to gather evidence of the changes in the species. Wallace and Bates spent most of their first year collecting near Belém, then examined inland separately. They sometimes met to discuss their findings. Wallace spent four years analyzing the inhabitants and the languages he encountered, along with the geography, flora, and fauna. After returning to the U.K., he wrote several papers and books about his ventures and findings. This wonderful book is one of his impressive travel books.

Book The Amazon the Story of a Great River

Download or read book The Amazon the Story of a Great River written by Robin Furneaux and published by Hamish Hamilton. This book was released on 1969 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 1499, Vincente Pinzon, who had accomanied Columbus on his first great voyage of discovery, was amazed to find that he was sailing through fresh water though out of sight of any land. He imagined that he had reached India; he was in fact off the coast of Brazil and what he had discovered was the mouth of the greatest river in the world. At its mouth the river is 208 miles wide, and every second its current sweeps seven and a half million cubic feet of water out to sea with a force which literally rolls back the Atlantic Ocean and freshens it for 150 miles. It has over a thousand tributaries, and it stretches apparently without end through rain-forest and jungle, much of which is still unexplored and inhabited only by Indians as primitive now as they were when the first Spanish conquistadors landed in South America. The Amazon is laid out on a gigantic scale and it has attracted men who seem larger than life: Pizarro and Orellana searching for El Dorado; Aguirre, a figure of almost incredible cruelty; the Jesuits with their remarkable system of controlling the natives by a Communist theocracy; La Condamine, the intrepid Isabella Godin des Odonais, and Humboldt 'the greatest man in the world', in the hunt for knowledge rather than gold; Theodore Rooseveltr discovering a new river; and the almost fabulous Colonel Fawcett. Robin Furneaux, who has himself travelled up the Amazon and describes the jungle and the river, the animals and the Indians, with great vividness, gives here a portrait in depth running from the time of the early explorers through the years of the rubber boom and the Putumayo Scandal, which sent Roger Casement off on a personal crusade that revealed facts of the utmost horror, up to the present. His book is compounded of high endeavour, tragedy and adventure, and is the first to deal with the Amazon and its history so fully and so successfully"--Publisher's description, p. [3] of dust jacket.
