Book The Discourse of Classified Advertising

Download or read book The Discourse of Classified Advertising written by Paul Bruthiaux and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1996-07-11 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linguists who have studied simplified varieties of a given language, such as pidgins or the language of care-givers, have tended to explain similarities in their structure by the fact that they use the same mechanisms of simplification. Bruthiaux tests this idea by looking at the structure of classified ads in American English, using a body of 800 ads from four categories: automobile sales, apartments for rent, help wanted, and personal ads. Bruthiaux's thesis is that strict, uniform constraints on space should result in uniformly simple texts, no matter which category they are in, and that any variation would be due to the particular needs of each category. To prove this he describes the linguistic structure of classified ads, and shows that they are characterized by a minimal degree of morphosyntactic elaboration. He then examines aspects of their conventions to highlight the role of pre-patterned and prefabricated segments whose collocational rigidity may force the inclusion of otherwise dispensable items. He finds that there is indeed significant variation across ad categories in terms of morphosyntactic elaboration, and concludes that this is due to a greater or lesser need to be explicit, as well as a greater or lesser anticipation of interaction. Finally, he examines the implications of these findings for the study of linguistic simplification and register variation.

Book Persuasion Across Genres

Download or read book Persuasion Across Genres written by Helena Halmari and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Persuasion, in its various linguistic forms, enters our lives daily. Politicians and the news media attempt to change or confirm our beliefs, while advertisers try to bend our tastes toward buying their products. Persuasion goes on in courtrooms, universities, and the business world. Persuasion pervades interpersonal relations in all social spheres, public and private. And persuasion reaches us via a large number of genres and their intricate interplay. This volume brings together nine chapters which investigate some of the typical genres of modern persuasion. Using both quantitative and qualitative methods, the authors explore the linguistic features of successful (and unsuccessful) persuasion and the reasons for the variation of persuasive choices as realized in various genres: business negotiations, judicial argumentation, political speech, advertising, newspaper editorials, and news writing. In the final chapter, the editors tie together the two themes — persuasion and genres — by proposing an Intergenre Model. This model assumes that a powerful force behind generic evolution is the perennial need for implicit persuasion.

Book Recruitment Advertising as an Instrument of Employer Branding

Download or read book Recruitment Advertising as an Instrument of Employer Branding written by Jolanta Łącka-Badura and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book offers a linguistic analysis of job advertising as an instrument of employer branding, investigating how the creation of the employer brand and the projection of employee value proposition are realised linguistically in a corpus of online job advertisements. The study is methodologically grounded in the current approaches to discourse analysis and business/organisational communication, as it is broadly understood, with particular emphasis on genre and register analysis, the language of persuasion and evaluation, as well as the language of (organisational) values. The analysis conducted in the book demonstrates that job advertisements constitute a distinct promotional business genre, a member of the system of genres applied in the job search context, increasingly resembling multi-modal marketing-type ads. The rhetorical structure of online recruitment advertisements confirms the initial hypothesis that job ads contribute to the projection and reinforcement of employer brands. The register of recruitment ads clearly harmonises with the employer branding function of the genre: extremely positive, encompassing a wide range of persuasive strategies, as well as lexico-grammatical choices contributing to the creation of employer brands, job advertising may justifiably be classified as a “paradigm case” of persuasion. With employer branding being deeply rooted in the values emanating from an organisation, the use of linguistic structures communicating or implying the system of attributes and values declared by the employing organisations is a powerful employer branding strategy, widely reflected in the corpus. Taking into account the interdisciplinary character of the analysis, the book will be of interest not only to linguists and business communication scholars, but also to human resource management and public relations researchers and practitioners.

Book excerpt: Appearing in an era of rapid change in the printing and publishing industries, James Joyce’s Ulysses exploited and exemplified those industries to the degree that the book can be seen as a virtual museum of 1904 media. Publishing in Joyce's “Ulysses”: Newspapers, Advertising and Printing, edited by William S. Brockman, Tekla Mecsnóber and Sabrina Alonso, gathers twelve essays by Joyce scholars exploring facets of those trades that pervade the substance of the book. Essays explore the book’s incorporation of mass-market weekly magazines, contemporary advertising slogans, newspaper clippings, the “Aeolus” episode’s printing office and the varied typographic styles of successive editions of Ulysses. Placing Joyce’s work in its historical milieu, the collection offers a fresh perspective on modern print culture. Contributors are: Sabrina Alonso, Harald Beck, William S. Brockman, Elisabetta d'Erme, Judith Harrington, Matthew Hayward, Sangam MacDuff, Tekla Mecsnóber, Tamara Radak, Fritz Senn, David Spurr, Jolanta Wawrzycka.

Book The Grammar of Genres and Styles

Download or read book The Grammar of Genres and Styles written by Dominique Legallois and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-04-09 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides new findings about the grammar of genres and styles. It combines new methods with different kinds of empirical material, from social reports to live TV sports commentaries or 16th century newspapers, in English, French, Latin and Spanish. The study of non-discrete units suggests new ways of seeing the linguistic variation between genres and styles and the ways in which belonging to a genre predetermines linguistic choices.

Download or read book Call center service for classified ads a study of the defeat of expectation in institutional discourse written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
