Book The Liaison Officer The Airland Battle Commander s Directed Telescope

Download or read book The Liaison Officer The Airland Battle Commander s Directed Telescope written by Henry S. Tuttle and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph asks the question, How can the command and control system best support the AirLand Battle commander, i.e., what mix of technology and people are appropriate? By tracing the historical evidence of liaison and liaison officers, and some of the current and proposed technological command and control aids, the study presents examples of how a commander has been successfully supported by his command and control system, and what some of the problems have been with both human and technological command and control aids. This monograph proposes a solution to the continuing problem facing commanders - how to have a clear picture of the battlefield and simultaneously transmit his intent to his subordinates. Liaison officers equipped with high technology equipment can serve the commander as a directed telescope system on the AirLand Battlefield. This monograph concludes that the best commanders have been the ones who made the command and control system work for them, and did not become slaves to the system. The study also concludes that its proposed solution - liaison officers equipped with high technology equipment - can improve the command and control system. By doing so, the commander can make his will and intent both informed and clearly transmitted.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Revised Anthology is about the future of military operations in the opening decades of the 21st century. Its purpose is not to predict the future, but to speculate on the conduct of military operations as an instrument of national policy in a world absent massive thermonuclear and conventional superpower confrontation characteristic of the Cold War. Also absent are indirect constraints imposed by that confrontation on virtually all political-military relationships, not solely those between superpower principals. Most of these essays are attempts to define military operational concepts that might be employed to execute such an engagement strategy.

Book excerpt: The unique leadership and lasting legacy of the greatest British army commander of the Second World War and one of the most professional and well-liked generals in the allied coalition. Bernard Law Montgomery was a dedicated battlefield tactician, though a controversial one. In North Africa in 1942, he commanded the Eighth Army to a great triumph against Rommel at El Alamein, which Churchill hailed as the beginning of the end of the war. During the planning stages for the invasion of Sicily, Montgomery proved himself to be a splendid organizer and a great believer in simplicity. But he was also known as a complicated man whose legacy remains tainted by his insensitive and boastful nature and desire for personal glory—all of which can have dangerous consequences on the battlefield. In the end, though, it was only due to Montgomery's influence that the weight of the Allied attack at Normandy was increased, and the Allied success of D-Day owes much to his far-sightedness. In the field, especially during the planning stages, he was at his best. An inspirational commander whose self-confidence was legendary, Montgomery's military life has proved to be a great lesson for leaders in the years since.
