Book The King s Honor and the King s Cardinal

Download or read book The King s Honor and the King s Cardinal written by John L. Sutton and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early in 1733 Augustus II, elector of Saxony and king of Poland, died in Warsaw from complications of a gangrenous foot. The elective throne of Poland thus fell vacant, and the states of Europe began cautious maneuvers designed to secure for each some national advantage in the choice of a successor. Before the year was out, diplomacy had given way to military force. Yet the Age of Reason fostered a relationship between diplomacy and warfare that limited the violence of military action. The War of Polish Succession might have produced widespread carnage. It was a major struggle among the great powers of Europe with actions in Poland, the Rhineland, and Italy. Many illustrious commanders took part—Marshal Villars and Prince Eugene, Maurice de Saxe and Count Daun. Behind them stood the powerful figures of Cardinal Fleury, anxious to uphold the honor of King Louis even as he guarded against escalation of the war, and Emperor Charles VI, obsessed with his desire to keep the Holy Roman Empire in Hapsburg hands. After three years of wary military action the war ended as it had begun, in a series of secret diplomatic maneuvers. No nation was annihilated, no prince unthroned, and once again Europe's precarious balance of power had been restored. John L. Sutton's engrossing account, the first in any major European language to bring together the evidence from the great diplomatic and military archives of Europe, reveals the very essence of eighteenth-century warfare, with its grand campaigns as formal as minuets, its sieges as gentlemanly as court receptions. On another level, the plight of the mercenaries who did much of the fighting yet had no stake in the conflict beyond day-to-day survival is portrayed just as vividly in this clear-eyed examination of a dynastic war and its setting.

Book Poland and the Origins of the Second World War

Download or read book Poland and the Origins of the Second World War written by Marek Kornat and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 2021-03-11 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph deals with Polish foreign policy shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War. In tracing the diplomatic activity of foreign minister Józef Beck, it discusses six general problems: (1) the Polish political situation under the pressure of appeasement; (2) the project of Intermarium and efforts to implement it; (3) the action against Czechoslovakia and the conflict with the Soviet Union; (4) the Polish attitude towards the German concept of Gesamtlosung in Germany's relations with Poland; (5) the genesis of the Polish alliance with Great Britain; (6) the Allies' military inaction after Nazi Germany's aggression. In these conditions, Poland made four key decisions: it stood against Czechoslovakia, it rejected German demands, it allied itself with the United Kingdom, and it rejected the Soviet Union's claim for the Red Army to march across Polish lands.

Book The War of the Polish Succession in Italy 1733 1736

Download or read book The War of the Polish Succession in Italy 1733 1736 written by Giancarlo Boeri and published by Luca Cristini Editore (Soldiershop). This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The military events of the War of Polish Succession have always been rather neglected, focusing instead on the diplomatic aspects of the conflict. Perhaps this is also due to the circumstance that in the German sector, considered the main theater of operations, no major events of arms took place, apart from the siege of some strongholds, while the only two battles of the war (Parma and Guastalla) occurred in Italy. This series is devoted to the armies and navies operating in the Italian area during the conflict, which pitted the forces of Emperor Charles VI against those of France, Spain and the Kingdom of Sardinia, later joined by the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. This volume (divided into three tomes) is the first in the series and covers both the events of the war in general and the particular events of the French Armée d'Italie. Tome 1 deals specifically with historical events, tome 2 with organization, and tome 3 with uniforms, equipment, and flags.

Book Austria s Wars of Emergence 1683 1797

Download or read book Austria s Wars of Emergence 1683 1797 written by Michael Hochedlinger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Habsburg Monarchy has received much historiographical attention since 1945. Yet the military aspects of Austria’s emergence as a European great power in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries have remained obscure. This book shows that force of arms and the instruments of the early modern state were just as important as its marriage policy in creating and holding together the Habsburg Monarchy. Drawing on an impressive up-to-date bibliography as well as on original archival research, this survey is the first to put Vienna’s military back at the centre stage of early modern Austrian history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A History of Diplomacy, historian Jeremy Black investigates how a form of courtly negotiation and information-gathering in the early modern period developed through increasing globalization into a world-shaping force in twenty-first-century politics. The monarchic systems of the sixteenth century gave way to the colonial development of European nations—which in turn were shaken by the revolutions of the eighteenth century—the rise and progression of multiple global interests led to the establishment of the modern-day international embassy system. In this detailed and engaging study of the ever-changing role of international relations, the aims, achievements, and failures of foreign diplomacy are presented along with their complete historical and cultural background.

Book Britain Hanover and the Protestant Interest 1688 1756

Download or read book Britain Hanover and the Protestant Interest 1688 1756 written by Andrew C. Thompson and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new examination of the links between religion and politics in the early eighteenth century, showing how the defence of protestantism became a major plank in foreign policy. Religious ideas and power-politics were strongly connected in the early eighteenth century: William III, George I and George II all took their role as defenders of the protestant faith extremely seriously, and confessional thinking was of major significance to court whiggery. This book considers the importance of this connection. It traces the development of ideas of the protestant interest, explaining how such ideas were used to combat the perceived threats to the European states system posed by universal monarchy, and showing how the necessity of defending protestantism within Europe became a theme in British and Hanoverian foreign policy. Drawing on a wide range of printed and manuscript material in both Britain and Germany, the book emphasises the importance of a European context for eighteenth-century British history, and contributes to debates about the justification of monarchy and the nature of identity in Britain. Dr ANDREW C. THOMPSON is Lecturer in History, Queens' College, Cambridge.
