Book A Reader in the Language of Shakespearean Drama

Download or read book A Reader in the Language of Shakespearean Drama written by Vivian Salmon and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1987-01-01 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years the language of Shakespearean drama has been described in a number of publications intended mainly for the undergraduate student or general reader, but the studies in academic journals to which they refer are not always easily accessible even though they are of great interest to the general reader and essential for the specialist. The purpose of this collection is therefore to bring together some of the most valuable of these studies which, in discussing various aspects of the language of the early 17th century as exemplified in Shakespearean drama, provide the reader with deeper insights into the meaning of Shakespearean text, often by reference to the social, literary and linguistic context of the time.

Book Language Poets Use

Download or read book Language Poets Use written by Winifred Nowottny and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2000-12-01 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mrs Nowottny's chief aim in this 'valuable book which could serve as a useful introduction to practical criticism' is to inquire what it is that makes the language of poetry poetic. The book grows out of the leading trends today in ideas about language and the way is works but to the maters discussed Mrs. Nowottny brings a keen mind of her won and considerable powers as a literary critic. Stressing the continuity of poetry with other uses of language she shows how under the control of the poet's purpose everyday language contributes to the achievement of the most complex and profound effects, and she illustrates these effects with a wealth of examples.

Book The Augustan Art of Poetry

Download or read book The Augustan Art of Poetry written by Robin Sowerby and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-01-26 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While previous studies have concentrated largely upon political concerns, The Augustan Art of Poetry is an exploration of the influence of the Roman Augustan aesthetic on English neo-classical poets of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. At the conclusion of his translation of Virgil, Dryden claims implicitly to have given English poetry the kind of refinement in language and style that Virgil had given the Latin. In this timely new study Robin Sowerby offers a strong apologia for the fine artistry of the Augustans, concentrating in particular on the period's translations, a topic and method not hitherto ventured in any full-length comparative study. The mediation of the Augustan aesthetic is explored through the De Arte Poetica of Vida represented in the Augustan version of Pitt, and its culmination is represented by examination of Dryden's Virgil in relation to predecessors. The effect of the Augustan aesthetic upon versions of silver Latin poets and upon Pope's Homer is also assessed and comparisons are drawn with modern translations.
