Book The Diaries of Joseph and Mary

Download or read book The Diaries of Joseph and Mary written by Dennis P. McGeehan and published by . This book was released on 2017-01-07 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, we read brief snippets of the early life of Jesus and the actions of His parents Joseph and Mary. These stories are proclaimed during the Advent/Christmas season each year from the Pulpit and have become very familiar to all, Christian and non-Christian alike. It may come as a surprise to the modern reader that much more detail is available to anyone who wishes to take the time to do some digging. These details are the conclusions that were reached by men and women as they meditated on the Nativity narratives in the Bible and also on the oral tradition that was passed on and debated early in the history of the Church. Who are these men and women? Men like St. Irenaeus who was the second Bishop of Lyons and lived between A.D. 140 and A.D. 202, St. Athanasius, who became Bishop of Alexandria in 328 A.D. , St. John Chrysostom, A.D. 344/345 - A.D. 407, St. Jerome, A.D. 347 - 419/420 A.D. , St. Augustine A.D. 354 - A.D. 430. These Fathers of the Church and others have offered their insight into the lives of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. Their conclusions provide background and a fleshing out of the details that are worthy of consideration when meditating on the Christmas Narrative. These details are presented in the form of diary entries that Joseph and Mary could have made while they lived the events that have eternally impacted our lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible in Matthew and Luke briefly relates how Mary became pregnant with Jesus, how Joseph took her as his wife and then how Jesus got lost in the Temple at age twelve. A few short pages spans the time from before his birth to age twelve, but is there more? The Early Church Fathers thought so. Saint Jerome, Saint Athanasius, Saint Augustine and others gave sermons to their flocks on details left out of Scripture. These stories have been mostly lost to the modern Christian but now are brought to life in The Diaries of Joseph and Mary. Nothing in the Bible about the Nativity is changed, nothing about who Jesus is is changed. Rather the ancient theologians proffered insights surrounding these events and filled in gaps. The Diaries of Joseph and Mary presents the beliefs of the Early Church Fathers on the Nativity in the form of a diary that Joseph and Mary may have kept. It illuminates the events and answers questions like, "Where was Joseph when Mary visited Elizabeth?" In addition the book offers an appendix, 101 Questions and Answers About Saint Joseph that provides the reader with additional details. The questions delve deeper into who Joesph was, indeed who he had to be as the man chosen by God the Father to be the foster-father of His Son on Earth. The reader of this book will find in Joseph a man who all men should try to emulate no matter their vocation in life. Together the Diary of Joseph and Mary and 101 Questions and Answers About Saint Joseph provide a wonderful way to enter more deeply into the message of the Advent and Christmas season. Writing this book my faith has been deepened. My celebration of the Advent and Christmas seasons are more vibrant and alive for me. my hope is that you, the reader, have the same experience.

Book excerpt: Mary was just one of the carefree young girls who went to the well at dawn to get water. I enjoyed watching her because she seemed unusually sweet and innocent- and sincere. No one knew what to think when she fled so suddenly to Elisabeth's place in Ain Karim. Rumor had it she had seen an angel, but I didn't put too much stock in that. After all, she was young and impressionable. But when she came back obviously pregnant, how the tongues did wag! I watched her from a distance, all through the years. I heard about the remarkable flight to Egypt with her husband, Joseph, and was glad they chose to return to Nazareth after all was said and done. They had a cute boy; they named him Jesus. A person couldn't help loving him. I could tell she was really wrapped up in her children, especially that boy. I had to scratch my head a few times, though, when he started doing miracles-pretty uncanny, that. But his preaching, well, that sure had a way of touching the heart. That same heart nearly broke when I saw her grief when her boy was crucified. You'll read about it through Mary's eyes, through her words and her tears, in this, her diary.

Book The Purple Diaries

Download or read book The Purple Diaries written by Joseph Egan and published by Diversion Books. This book was released on 2016-11-22 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The “endlessly fascinating” true story of a custody battle that threatened to expose the seedy secrets of Hollywood’s Golden Age—illustrated with photos (Entertainment Weekly). Most famous for playing opposite Humphrey Bogart in The Maltese Falcon, Mary Astor was one of Hollywood’s most beloved film stars. But her story wasn’t a happy one. Widowed at twenty-four, she quickly entered a rocky marriage with Dr. Franklyn Thorpe in which both were unfaithful. When they finally divorced in 1936, Astor sued for custody of their baby daughter Marylyn, setting off one of Hollywood’s most scandalous court cases. In the ruthless court battle, Thorpe held a trump card: the diaries Astor had been keeping for years. In them, Astor detailed her own affairs—including with playwright George S. Kaufman—as well as the myriad dalliances of some of Hollywood’s biggest names. Studio heads were desperate to keep such damning details from leaking. But speculation of the dairy’s contents became a major news story, stealing the front page from The Spanish Civil War and Hitler’s 1936 Olympic Games in newspapers all over America. With unlimited access to the photographs and memorabilia of Mary Astor’s estate, The Purples Diaries is an in-depth look at Hollywood’s Golden Age as it has never been seen before.

Book Joseph Cornell s Theater of the Mind

Download or read book Joseph Cornell s Theater of the Mind written by Joseph Cornell and published by . This book was released on 2000-10-01 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph Cornell is a legendary yet living presence in American art. His famous boxes, with their ineffably perfect choice of elements -- the stuffed birds, the buttons and toys, the fragments of old theatrical posters, the poignant allusions to the worlds of the nineteenth-century ballet and opera -- are some of the most recognizable signatures in all of twentieth-century art. From this extended selection of his diaries and other written material, Cornell emerges as a deeply dedicated and conscious artist, though one whose personality was every bit as unusual as many had perceived. Cornell used his diaries as he used his boxes, to capture and preserve his passing feelings, his momentary urges, and his anguished hesitations. He was an incessant and brilliant recorder of his thoughts as he considered his art or traveled to New York to haunt the antiquarian bookstores and shops where he collected material for his boxes. We see here his deep immersion in French symbolist poetry and his intense interest in his surrealist contemporaries. We see also his plangent yearning for les sylphides, the fairies of the ballet world who seemed to be reincarnated for him in the form of waitresses, dancers, actresses, and shop girls in his own world. Cornell corresponded with an astonishing range of people including Parker Tyler, Marianne Moore, Tony Curtis, Robert Motherwell, and Susan Sontag. His letters were often sent in the form of collages, and several of them are reproduced in this book.

Book The Diaries of St Matthew

Download or read book The Diaries of St Matthew written by Mano Govindaraj and published by WestBowPress. This book was released on 2013-11-19 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a drama about how the gospel of St. Matthew may have been written by Matthew, one of the disciples of Jesus Christ. One day Jesus went to the tax office at Capernaum without any notice whatsoever and called Matthew. Matthew saw something so special in Jesus that he honored him with a family feast that same day and humbled himself to become a disciple of Jesus. Matthew was a tax collector of the Roman government and was therefore well trained in writing records and diaries. The diaries began with the call of Matthew and ended a few days after the resurrection. The drama presents a scenario for the origin of the synoptic puzzle and considers why these diaries remained unknown to the early Christians for two generations. The only assumption we need to make is that those devout people who put together the original Greek Bible acted in good faith and knew what they were doing when they placed it as the first book of their new scripture.

This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hilarious send-up of sex, scandal, and the Golden Age of Hollywood by legendary cartoonist Edward Sorel. In 1965, a young, up-and-coming illustrator by the name of Edward Sorel tore away layer after layer of linoleum from the floor of his $97-a-month Manhattan apartment until he discovered a hidden treasure: issues of the New York Daily News and Daily Mirror from 1936, each ablaze with a scandalous child custody trial taking place in Hollywood starring the actress Mary Astor—and the journal in which she detailed her numerous affairs. Thus began a half-century obsession that reached its peak in Mary Astor’s Purple Diary, “a thoroughly charming” (New York Times Book Review, front-page review) account of the scandal in which Sorel narrates and illustrates the travails of the Oscar-winning actress alongside his own personal story of discovering an unlikely muse. Now in a stunning paperback, featuring more than sixty ribald and rapturous original illustrations, Mary Astor’s Purple Diary is the life’s masterpiece of one of America’s greatest illustrators.

Book JFK and Mary Meyer A Love Story

Download or read book JFK and Mary Meyer A Love Story written by Jesse Kornbluth and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-01-21 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A breezy, tantalizing view of the woman who, through wiles and a complete lack of scruples, briefly transcended the role of presidential mistress—and may have paid for it with her life.” —The New York Times John F. Kennedy said he needed sex every three days or he got a headache. In the White House, he never had a headache. Kennedy met Mary Pinchot in 1935, when he was eighteen and she was sixteen. Twenty years later, when she was living in Virginia and married to Cord Meyer, a high-ranking CIA official, she was Jack and Jackie Kennedy’s next-door neighbor. In 1962, she was an artist, divorced, living in Washington—and Kennedy’s first serious romance. Mary Pinchot Meyer was more than a bedmate. She was Kennedy’s beacon light: his sole female adviser, spending mornings in the Oval Office, and, at night, discussing issues. After the 1964 election, Kennedy said, he would divorce Jackie and marry her. After the assassination, Mary didn’t believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone, and she shared that view, loudly and often, in Washington’s most elite circles. Her ex-husband urged her to be silent, but when the report of the Warren Commission was released, she was even more loudly critical. On October 10, 1964, two days before her forty-forth birthday, as she walked in Georgetown, a man shot her in the head and the heart. That night, Mary's best friend called her sister. “Mary had a diary,” she said. “Get it.” The diary was filled with sketches, notes for paintings—and ten pages about an affair with an unnamed lover. Her sister burned it. In JFK and Mary Meyer: A Love Story, Jesse Kornbluth recreates the diary Mary might have written. Working from a timeline of Kennedy’s presidency and every documented account of their public relationship, he has written a high-octane thriller that tracks this secret, doomed romance—and invites readers to solve Mary’s murder.
