Book The Diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in College Aged Deaf Individuals

Download or read book The Diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in College Aged Deaf Individuals written by Gregory Thomas Farber and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), which has been found to impair one's social, familial, scholastic, and occupational adjustment, is one of the most comprehensively examined neurodevelopmental disorders. For deaf individuals, language and executive functioning have important implications for cognitive and academic functioning. However, for deaf and hard of hearing (D/HH) individuals with ADHD, it is not clear to what extent their cognitive and academic functioning are impacted as the amount of research conducted with deaf individuals with ADHD has been limited, especially within the realm of deaf adults. There are many areas that need to be explored in relation to ADHD, executive dysfunction, deaf individuals, and language acquisition/secondary language delay. In relation to evaluating and assessing a D/HH individual for ADHD, Farber (2019) demonstrated evidence of validity for the Barkley Adult ADHD Rating Scale-IV (BAARS-IV) as a screening measure for ADHD in college-level deaf students. For this study, the validity of the BAARS-IV as a screener for discriminating ADHD from Non-ADHD among college-level D/HH students was replicated and additional evidence of concurrent validity obtained. This study also demonstrated evidence of validity for the Barkley Deficits in Executive Functions Scale (BDEFS) as a screening measure for executive functions in college-level deaf individuals. Also, this study provided a clearer understanding of the significant role that executive functions play in the overall functioning of D/HH individuals with and without ADHD."--Abstract.

Book Assessing Deaf College Students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Download or read book Assessing Deaf College Students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder written by Rebecca Mowell and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study examined the sensitivity of two instruments used in assessing Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) with deaf individuals. Forty deaf college students, 20 with a diagnosis of ADHD and 20 controls, completed the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function -- Adult Version (BRIEF-A) and the Connors' Adult ADHD Rating Scale (CAARS). An analysis of variance (ANOVA), multivariate analyses of variance (MANOVA), and sensitivity, specificity, and predictive value analyses found that both the BRIEF-A and CAARS were adequate behavior rating scales for measuring ADHD symptoms in a deaf population. Results also revealed that the BRIEF-A was a more specific measure whereas the CAARS was a more sensitive measure."--Abstract.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not long ago, conventional wisdom held that ADHD was a disorder of childhood only—that somewhere during puberty or adolescence, the child would outgrow it. Now we know better: the majority of children with the disorder continue to display symptoms throughout adolescence and into adulthood. It is during the teen and young adult years that the psychological and academic needs of young people with ADHD change considerably, and clinical and campus professionals are not always sufficiently prepared to meet the challenge. College Students with ADHD is designed to bring the professional reader up to speed. The book reviews the latest findings on ADHD in high school and college students, assessment methods, and pharmacological and nonpharmacological interventions. Practical guidelines are included for helping young adults make the transition to college, so they may cope with their disorder and do as well as possible in school and social settings. Coverage is straightforward, realistic, and geared toward optimum functioning and outcomes. Among the topics featured: - Background information, from current statistics to diagnostic issues. - ADHD in high school adolescents. - ADHD in college students: behavioral, academic, and psychosocial functioning. - Assessment of ADHD in college students. - Psychosocial/educational treatment of ADHD in college students. - Pharmacotherapy for college students with ADHD. - Future directions for practice and research. The comprehensive information in College Students with ADHD provides a wealth of information to researchers and professionals working with this population, including clinical and school psychologists, school and college counselors, special education teachers, social workers, developmental psychologists, and disability support staff on college campuses, as well as allied mental health providers.

Book Factors Influencing the Expression of Attention deficit hyperactivity Disorder in College Students

Download or read book Factors Influencing the Expression of Attention deficit hyperactivity Disorder in College Students written by Judah W. Serrano and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Objective: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a heterogeneous and chronic disorder characterized by developmentally inappropriate and persistent symptoms of inattention and/or hyperactivity/impulsivity that result in impairment (APA, 2013). Because ADHD is impacted by genetics, experiences during developmental periods, current experiences, and more, a biopsychosocial approach considering the differential susceptibility of individuals is necessary in understanding ADHD (Richards, 2013; Belsky, 1997). The current study explored the impact of social identities, childhood trauma, and current exercise on the expression of ADHD in a large sample of US college students. Method: Participants (N = 2,172) from six public universities completed an online survey. Trauma, exercise, and ADHD were explored in an intersectional framework across six groups based on race, ethnicity, sex, gender, and sexual orientation. Results: Sexual orientation and gender identity minority (SGM) students across race and ethnicity reported high rates of ADHD diagnosis and symptoms, experienced the most trauma in childhood, exercised the least, and struggled with the most impairment. Additionally, trauma and exercise impacted the association of ADHD symptoms with impairment differently across identity groups. For cisgender, heterosexual males of color, childhood trauma emerged as a risk factor and exercise emerged as a protective factor for the impact of ADHD on daily impairment. Discussion: Results highlight the need for systematic research that approaches ADHD through a biopsychosocial lens and addresses how identity factors (especially SGM identities) impact the expression of ADHD.

Book From Traditional to Ecological

Download or read book From Traditional to Ecological written by Stephen Houghton and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The majority of research conducted in the field of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD) has comprised laboratory-based psychological studies using highly repetitive and boring tasks. Hence, the generalisability of such work is somewhat limited. This book describes, in three sections, a unique research program which successfully sought to achieve ecological validity in research. Specifically, the three sections describe: the historical conceptualisation of AD/HD and the emergence of models of AD/HD; the development of a unique quantitative research program incorporating studies using a traditional approach through to those conducted in naturalistic settings; and the initiation of a related 'grounded theory' research approach to bringing about a fuller understanding of the everyday experiences of individuals with AD/HD.

Book Handbook of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Download or read book Handbook of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder written by Michael Fitzgerald and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2007-04-30 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most prevalent childhood psychiatric disorders of our time. The condition is defined by levels of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity that are in impairing and developmentally inappropriate. Increasingly, there is a growing appreciation that for many individuals the disorder may persist into adulthood and be associated with significant social and economic burden. Conditions, such as ADHD, that are manifestly heterogeneous in terms of their clinical presentation, underlying neurobiology and treatment response, must be tackled on multiple fronts. This Handbook of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder provides a state of the art position on each of these fronts from leading clinicians and researchers from around the world. Broad in its scope and comprehensive in its detail, this book should be as useful to the student as it is to the experienced clinician or researcher.

Book Efficacy and Acceptability of an Online Group Intervention for ADHD in College Students

Download or read book Efficacy and Acceptability of an Online Group Intervention for ADHD in College Students written by Maggie Witherspoon Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Research on Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in adults is growing as the chronic nature of its course and development is more understood. Those with ADHD tend to have deficits in executive functioning (EF), which particularly affects college students who experience academic and life challenges that rely on EF. Relatively little research exists documenting evidence-based treatments of ADHD for this population. Recent research suggests that internet-based interventions (IBI) can generally be beneficial for young adults, but more work is needed to support this claim with regards to ADHD, in particular. The current study examines an IBI adaptation of a recently developed intervention for college students with ADHD that focuses on organizational, time management, and planning (OTMP) skills in a group format. Students with ADHD at three universities (n = 38; 65.8% biologically female; M age 23.64; 78.9% White; 94.7% Not Hispanic or Latino) completed a battery of self-report measures of ADHD symptoms, impairment, and OTMP skills pre- and post-treatment. Most participants reported a previous ADHD diagnosis (n = 28) and all others reported at least five symptoms of inattentive symptoms at pre-treatment (M for all participants = 6.55). The manualized intervention consisted of six group and three individual sessions. Pre-post differences in symptom severity and functional impairment due to ADHD-related symptoms suggest that the intervention has a positive effect, and students endorsed generally high satisfaction with many aspects of their treatment experience. Overall, one-tailed, paired t-tests comparing pre- and post-treatment scores indicated significant improvements in inattentive (IA) and hyperactive- impulsive (Hyp/Imp) ADHD symptoms, family-, school-, life skills-, and self-concept-related impairment, impairment related to self-management to time, self-motivation, and emotional self- regulation, and use of OTMP skills. Additionally, participants generally reported satisfaction with the IBI-adapted intervention. In sum, results suggest that the online adaptation of this intervention had promise to be efficacious; more extensive study of the intervention is needed."--Abstract.
