Book Early Pulmonary Tuberculosis

Download or read book Early Pulmonary Tuberculosis written by John Bromham Hawes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-04 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Pulmonary Tuberculosis: Diagnosis, Prognosis and Treatment Tamas are plenty of large authoritative books about tuberculosis. There are plenty of small books which are not authoritative. Dr. Hawes has written a book which is small and yet authoritative. Therein lies its unique merit. Many of the points on which he expresses himself so frankly and tersely are hotly controverted points and he has not formed his Opinion without giving due consid eration to what is to be said upon all sides. In the end I think he has arrived at a set of beliefs expressing the best knowledge of the time. His wide and varied experi ence in the clinical management of tuberculous patients at the Massachusetts General Hospital is balanced by a ripe acquaintance with the social and institutional side of the tuberculosis problem. His position as secretary to the commission in charge of the four tuberculosis sanatoria maintained by the State of Massachusetts brings him into close touch with all of the problems relating to the sanatorium care of tuberculous patients. At the same time, he sees these institutions from without and from the standpoint of an active general practitioner. I feel sure that the book will be of use to many physicians. Book Physician s Note Book on the Early Diagnosis of Pulmonary Tuberculosis Classic Reprint

Download or read book Physician s Note Book on the Early Diagnosis of Pulmonary Tuberculosis Classic Reprint written by California Bureau of Tuberculosis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-25 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physician's Note Book on the Early Diagnosis of Pulmonary Tuberculosis In the early stages of tuberculosis, when the disease is not extremely acute, there is often present a symptom complex which is not at all dissimilar to malaria. There is the same lassitude and loss of ambition, headache, tendency to tire easily, a feverishness, especially in the afternoon, and, in many cases chilliness or even definite chills. When the chill and fever occurring in the after noon are followed by sweating at night the diagnosis is even more obscured. The lack of the presence of plasmodia in the blood, the failure of the symptoms to clear up under quinine treatment, and the careful taking of a history and a painstaking examination should enable us to rule out malaria and reach the proper decision if the patient is tuberculous. Book Tuberculin in Diagnosis and Treatment Classic Reprint

Download or read book Tuberculin in Diagnosis and Treatment Classic Reprint written by Louis Hamman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-18 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tuberculin in Diagnosis and Treatment The use of tuberculin in diagnosis and treatment has re ceived wide attention during the past ten years. New methods of application in diagnosis have stimulated a keen interest to deter mine their value, and recent changes in attitude toward important questions bearing upon immunity have provoked extensive re searches, undertaken to make clear its mode of action. Tuberculin treatment, sternly rejected after its unsuccessful introduction, has again become widely popular and discussion is waged as to its true value, the most desirable preparation and the best methods of administration. A voluminous literature has grown up, and from these innumerable contributions we are now in a position to filter ofi certain facts that have crystallized. About much we are still nu certain, but there is enough that is definite to permit us to take bearings for our practical course. While this literature is easily ac cessible, it is widely distributed and a large part of the best of it is in foreign languages. No satisfactory summary has appeared in English, and such a summary seems particularly desirable, as over statements and misconceptions incident to early enthusiasm have stuck fast in the minds of many and have remained uncorrected by the overwhelming evidence of later investigations. In our ex perience there is a very general lack of knowledge of precisely what a reaction to tuberculin means, and of what account is the informa tion gained from its use when applied to a particular instance. Numerous cases are still sent to us with a diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis based solely upon a positive cutaneous reaction, and in medical discussion one hears the most bizarre interpretations of the. Subcutaneous test. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Treatment of Pulmonary Tuberculosis In 1890 Behring enunciated the doctrine of the antitoxic substances which develop in the animal or ganism from the bacterial toxins, and this led to the introduction of the antitoxin of diphtheria into gen eral medical practice. In spite of occasional adverse criticism and an occasional death due directly to the remedy, it has proved its value in the treatment of diphtheria beyond a doubt, and thousands of lives are yearly saved that would otherwise undoubtedly have been lost. Download or read book The Recognition of Pulmonary Tuberculosis Classic Reprint written by Charles David Parfitt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-04 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Recognition of Pulmonary Tuberculosis My own experience caused me much chagrin, though it was salutary. After my year's service at the Toronto General Hospital in '95, I went to London. I carried with me that excellent opinion of myself and of my training that ox-house surgeons of that hospital were Wont to have, but I soon found that with the stethoscope as well as in other matters of medical education and training, I had much to learn, and a good deal to unlearn. As a matter of fact. I was hopelessly at sea on the chest, both in accuracy of observation and in interpretation, and since then I have been forced to realize that it is only consistent watchfulness that can prevent error or oversight in chest work. While the opportunities for clinical training in general are to-day much better than in the early '90's, it is probable that many young physicians since then have begun practice without more accurate ideas of chest work than I had at the end of the house surgeon's year, and that they have not had the same opportunity to have their errors corrected. It is not then surprising that many cases possible of recognition go undiagnosed until a relatively advanced stage is reached. In the earlv '90's we saw none but far advanced cases in the wards, and, since these were greatly used for clinical instruction, it was usual for the dra matic changes to be. Emphasized, and the recognition of cavity became the acme of diagnosis for students. I recollect one or two cases only in the out-patient's department in which early adven titious sounds were demonstrated. Download or read book The Diagnosis and Treatment of Pulmonary Tuberculosis written by Francis Marion Pottenger and published by Rarebooksclub.com. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1908 edition. Excerpt: ... the day following the injection. We not infrequently have what we might term a secondary reaction coming on usually from three to five days after a dose has been given. This usually manifests itself by a slight temperature reaction and is sometimes accompanied by some of the slighter symptoms mentioned above. This is probably due to an autoinoculation of bacterial products from bacilli which have been destroyed as a result of the previous injection. That this explanation is probably correct may be inferred from the fact that if another injection of tuberculin be given at this time an increase of the reaction symptoms is apt to occur, showing that the dosage plus the amount of bacterial products of the autoinoculation taken together is too great a dose for the patient at the time. A dose should not be administered when such a secondary reaction is present. That this secondary reaction is not due to the "mobilization of bacilli" is proven by the fact that the temperature disappears at once. In fact, this "mobilization of bacilli" which was talked of so much by Virchow's followers is a myth when the remedies are used properly. I have given many thousands of injections and have never seen it occur. Moeller (Therapie der Lungenschwindsucht, Schroeder und Blumenfeld, page 246) also says that he has never seen it occur in 28,000 injections that he has given. There has been some discussion on this point, and like many Tuberculin be otners k still an open question. The objection to the use Used on a of tuberculin at such a time is based upon the belief that the Fever1? rise of temperature is due to an autointoxication due to tuber cle toxins being set free and being poured into the blood stream from the tuberculous focus. Download or read book Tuberculin in Diagnosis and Treatment written by Bandelier Bandelier and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tuberculin in Diagnosis and Treatment: A Text-Book of the Specific Diagnosis and Therapy of Tuberculosis for Practitioners and Students In the enlarged concluding section we have treated the matter from the standpoint of consistent but unbiased positivism and excluded the personal note. It is intended to convert to our views the opponents of specific measures, a section of the medical fraternity becoming smaller and smaller but not yet completely convinced, and at the same time to encourage the diagnostic and therapeutic use of tuberculin both in the institution and in general practice. We feel justified in defining and fixing its sphere owing to more than ten years' work in the specific diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis and a wealth of varied personal experi ence inside and outside the sanatorium which can hardly have been afforded to any other physician. And we feel it our bounden duty to aid the victorious progress of tuberculin through all hospitals, health resorts for tuberculosis and sanatoria, and where its valuable action will be displayed in a still higher degree through the ranks of the practitioners. So much for the explanation of the motives, the nature and the compass of the present revised and enlarged seventh edition. The general aim of the whole has remained the same. May this volume in its new form receive a kindly reception and add to the friends of earlier editions fresh champions for the fight against the national disease, tuberculosis - with the aid of specific diagnosis and treatment.
