Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At last, the true story can finally be told of my participation in the investigation of a haunted bookshop in Barry, South Wales, organized by my good friend and fellow science fiction writer Reverend Lionel Fanthorpe. As a result of the haunting in question, or perhaps the abundant coal dust that accompanied it, I was enabled to meet the Devil and make a mutually rewarding pact with him. The story also relates my subsequent close encounter with the Devil’s opposite number while participating as a volunteer in a psychology experiment at the University of Glamorgan, intended to open up a more effective conduit between the conscious and the unconscious mind. That one did not go as well, perhaps understandably given the inevitable conflict of interests, but was, and remains, no less intriguing.

Book The Devil s Music

    Book Details:
  • Author : Randall J. Stephens
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press
  • Release : 2018-03-19
  • ISBN : 0674919726
  • Pages : 222 pages

Download or read book The Devil s Music written by Randall J. Stephens and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When rock ’n’ roll emerged in the 1950s, ministers denounced it from their pulpits and Sunday school teachers warned of the music’s demonic origins. The big beat, said Billy Graham, was “ever working in the world for evil.” Yet by the early 2000s Christian rock had become a billion-dollar industry. The Devil’s Music tells the story of this transformation. Rock’s origins lie in part with the energetic Southern Pentecostal churches where Elvis, Little Richard, James Brown, and other pioneers of the genre worshipped as children. Randall J. Stephens shows that the music, styles, and ideas of tongue-speaking churches powerfully influenced these early performers. As rock ’n’ roll’s popularity grew, white preachers tried to distance their flock from this “blasphemous jungle music,” with little success. By the 1960s, Christian leaders feared the Beatles really were more popular than Jesus, as John Lennon claimed. Stephens argues that in the early days of rock ’n’ roll, faith served as a vehicle for whites’ racial fears. A decade later, evangelical Christians were at odds with the counterculture and the antiwar movement. By associating the music of blacks and hippies with godlessness, believers used their faith to justify racism and conservative politics. But in a reversal of strategy in the early 1970s, the same evangelicals embraced Christian rock as a way to express Jesus’s message within their own religious community and project it into a secular world. In Stephens’s compelling narrative, the result was a powerful fusion of conservatism and popular culture whose effects are still felt today.

Book The Adventures of Jonathan Dennis

Download or read book The Adventures of Jonathan Dennis written by Emma Jean Kelly and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-20 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history of the New Zealand Film Archive and its founding director. Jonathan Dennis (1953–2002), was the creative and talented founding director of the New Zealand Film Archive. As a Pakeha (non-Maori/indigenous New Zealander) with a strong sense of social justice, Dennis became a conduit for tension and debate over the preservation and presentation of indigenous and non-indigenous film archival materials from the time the Archive opened in 1981. His work resulted in a film archive and curatorship practice which differed significantly from that of the North American and European archives he originally sought to emulate. He supported a philosophical shift in archival practice by engaging indigenous peoples in developing creative and innovative exhibitions from the 1980s until his death, recognizing that much of the expertise required to work with archival materials rested with the communities outside archival walls. This book presents new interviews gathered by the author, as well as an examination of existing interviews, films and broadcasts about and with Jonathan Dennis, to consider the narrative of a life and work in relation to film archiving.
