Book War and Trade in Northern Seas

Download or read book War and Trade in Northern Seas written by H. S. K. Kent and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1973-04-05 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uninterrupted economic relations between England and Scandinavia were of vital importance to the maintenance and extension of the British Empire in the eighteenth century. Scandinavia supplied Britain with the timber to build her ships, with iron for ship-fittings, armaments and industry, and with smuggled tea at low prices to keep her people content. Scandinavia also furnished merchant fleets as neutral carriers for British goods during the Seven Years War, thus fundamentally assisting Britain's war effort. In addition she represented a small but lucrative market for Britain who was herself the largest single market for Sweden and Norway, and for the tea obtained from China by the Scandinavian East India Companies. In this study, Dr Kent examines the organization and extent of the legitimate and the smuggling trades, the effect of war and neutrality upon them, and the legal and diplomatic considerations which influenced economic enterprise and policies.

Book Scandinavian Design the United States 1890 1980

Download or read book Scandinavian Design the United States 1890 1980 written by Bobbye Tigerman and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2020-04-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This stunning book examines design exchanges between the United States and Scandinavia over nearly a century and explores the fascinating reasons why Scandinavian design has continued to resonate with Americans. Focusing on the extensive influence of Scandinavian design in the United States, this book shows how Nordic ideas about modern design and the objects themselves had an indelible impact on American culture and material life. It also considers America's influence on Scandinavian design, showing how cultural exchange is mutual by nature. In addition to familiar material like Danish furniture and Swedish glass, readers will learn about America's little-known "Viking Revival" style; the work of Howard Smith, an African-American artist who immigrated to Finland in the 1960s; and the myriad ways Scandinavian toys and household goods helped shape American child-rearing practices. The perfect addition to any Danish modern coffee table, this elegant book traces how Scandinavian design became an integral part of what is considered "American design." Book Relations of the United States with Sweden Classic Reprint

Download or read book Relations of the United States with Sweden Classic Reprint written by Knute Emil Carlson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relations of the United States with Sweden is author Knute Emil Carlson's doctoral thesis presented to the University of Pennsylvania. This book is a thorough examination of the relationship between the United States and a Scandinavian nation of significantly less global influence. Author Knute Carlson's study is a history of the relationship between Sweden and the United States. While the author's research examined the bond between the two nations up until the period of the First World War, this text presents only the early history of the nations. The work is focused on four major areas, each of which is dedicated a separate chapter. Part one examines the negotiations between the two nations to establish a free trade port in St. Bartholomew as early as 1784. Part two details a proposed alliance of neutral states during the Napoleonic Wars that was instigated by Sweden. The third chapter looks at the Straslund Claims and further land arrangements between the two countries. Finally, part four details the commercial relationship of Sweden and the United States. The text concludes with a detailed bibliography. Knute Emil Carlson's work is a brief but interesting examination of the relationship between a developing world power and a nation that would have seemed quite distant during the eighteenth century. At the time of its original publication little research existed examining the relations between Sweden and the United States, and thus this work served to fill a gap in the literature. Modern students of history will certainly find Carlson's research to be a compelling read. Relations of the United States with Sweden is a well crafted dissertation. Carlson was clearly a keen student of history, and this book benefits greatly from his enthusiasm and passion for the subject. For students and scholars of U.S. history, particularly as it relates to the nation's relationship with other countries, the author's work remains a valuable read. Book Swedish American Borderlands

Download or read book Swedish American Borderlands written by Dag Blanck and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2021-08-24 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reframing Swedish–American relations by focusing on contacts, crossings, and convergences beyond migration Studies of Swedish American history and identity have largely been confined to separate disciplines, such as history, literature, or politics. In Swedish–American Borderlands, this collection edited by Dag Blanck and Adam Hjorthén seeks to reconceptualize and redefine the field of Swedish–American relations by reviewing more complex cultural, social, and economic exchanges and interactions that take a broader approach to the international relationship—ultimately offering an alternative way of studying the history of transatlantic relations. Swedish–American Borderlands studies connections and contacts between Sweden and the United States from the seventeenth century to today, exploring how movements of people have informed the circulation of knowledge and ideas between the two countries. The volume brings together scholars from a wide range of disciplines within the humanities and social sciences to investigate multiple transcultural exchanges between Sweden and the United States. Rather than concentrating on one-way processes or specific national contexts, Swedish–American Borderlands adopts the concept of borderlands to examine contacts, crossings, and convergences between the nations, featuring specific case studies of topics like jazz, architecture, design, genealogy, and more. By placing interactions, entanglements, and cross-border relations at the center of the analysis, Swedish–American Borderlands seeks to bridge disciplinary divides, joining a diverse set of scholars and scholarship in writing an innovative history of Swedish–American relations to produce new understandings of what we perceive as Swedish, American, and Swedish American. Book excerpt: Previously available only in an out-of-print Swedish edition published in 1955, Henry Bengston's firsthand account deals with what historian Dag Blanck calls the "other Swedish America." Swedish immigrants in general were conservative, but Bengston and others--most notably Joe Hill--joined the working-class labor movement on the left, primarily as Debsian socialists, although their ranks included other socialists, communists, and anarchists. Involved in the radical labor movement on many fronts, Bengston was the editor of Svenska Socialisten from 1912 until he dropped out of the Scandinavian Socialist Federation in 1920. Even after 1920, however, his sympathies remained with the movement he had once strongly espoused.
