Book excerpt: Research has developed a laser velocimeter data processing technique that may be used for on-line estimation of turbulence power spectra from randomly timed samples at low data rates. First, an estimate of the turbulence autocovariance is made at each lag by discretizing the time axis into lag units, accumulating the products of pairs of sample magnitudes occurring at each lag, and dividing the accumulated sums by the histogram of lag products. Then, the discrete Fourier transform of the turbulence autocovariance is computed, giving an estimate of the turbulence power spectra. (Modified author abstract).

Book excerpt: Turbulence measurements with a Laser Doppler Velocimeter (LDV) using the dual scatter or differential Doppler mode have been made in a subsonic, fully developed channel flow. The measurements were made using only those light scattering particles occurring naturally in air. Results include mean velocity profiles, turbulence intensities, Reynolds stress distributions and a skewness measurement of the velocity distribution function across the channel. Statistical techniques were used to obtain the various turbulence parameters. Guidelines have been established for the amount of data needed to obtain results with a specified accuracy and confidence level. Measurements have also been made to determine the particle-size distribution. An aerodynamic means was used to determine the size distribution, in contrast to the usual optical procedures. Book excerpt: The objective of this work was to provide the theory and a system design for a new type of photon-counting processor for low-level Dual Scatter laser velocimeter (LV) signals which would be capable of both the first-order measurements of mean-flow and turbulence-intensity and also the second order time statistics: cross-correlation, auto-correlation, and related spectra. A general Poisson process model for low-level LV signals and noise which is valid from the photon- resolved regime all the way to the limiting case of non- stationary Gaussian noise was used. Computer simulation algorithms and higher order statistical moment analysis of Poisson processes have been derived and applied to the analysis of photon correlation techniques. A system design using a unique Dual Correlate and Subtract frequency discriminator technique is postulated and analyzed. Expectation analysis indicates that the objective measurements are feasible. Error analysis for the mean-flow case indicates that practical transonic wind tunnel measurements are possible with 100-1000 times less light than is required for burst-counter processors. A system design for a new high-speed photon processor for LV signals is provided.
