The KENTORT II process includes integral fluidized bed zone for pyrolysis, gasification, and combustion of the oil shale. The purpose of this program is to design and test the KENTORT II process at the 50-lb/hr scale. The work performed during this year involved projects that will contribute physical and chemical data for the final design of the 50-lb/hr retort. A cold-flow model of the 50-lb/hr retort was built and tested. The unit demonstrated stable operation and proper fluidization of all beds. Good control of solid recirculation up to the maximum design rate for each loop (200 and 500 lb/hr, respectively) was achieved simultaneously. Basically, the cold-flow model is completely operational and translation of the cold-flow design parameters to the design of the retort is ready to begin. In another aspect of the program, a study of the cracking and coking kinetics of shale oil vapors passed over processed shales was initiated. The addition of a mass spectrometer to the system to monitor total carbon, nitrogen and sulfur evolution in real-time was successful. Coking activities of processed shales were ranked as follows: combusted shale> gasified shale> pyrolyzed shale. Arrangements for conducting an evaluation of KENTORT-derived oil for asphalt applications were finalized and testing was initiated.

The KENTORT II process includes integral fluidized bed zones for pyrolysis, gasification, and combustion of the oil shale. The purpose of this program is to design and test the KENTORT II process at the 50-lb/hr scale. The raw oil shale sample for the program was mined, prepared, characterized and stored this quarter. The shale that was chosen was from the high-grade zone of the Devonian Cleveland Member of the Ohio Shale in Montgomery County, Kentucky. The shale was mined and then transported to the contractor's crushing facility where it was crushed, double-screened, and loaded into 85 55-gal barrels. The barrels, containing a total of 25-30 tons of shale, were transported to the (CAER) Center for Applied Energy Research where the shale was double-screened, analyzed and stored. A major objective of the program is the study of solid-induced secondary coking and cracking reactions. A valved fluidized bed reactor has been the primary apparatus used for this study prior to this quarter, but two additional techniques have been initiated this quarter for the study of other aspects of this issue. First, the two-stage hydropyrolysis reactor at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland, was used to study the coking tendency of shale oil vapors under a wide range of pyrolysis and hydropyrolysis conditions. This work enabled us to examine secondary reactions under high pressure conditions (up to 150 bar) which were previously unavailable. Second, the development of a fixed bed reactor system was initiated at the CAER to study the coking and cracking characteristics of model compounds. A fixed bed apparatus was necessary because the conversion of model compounds was too low in the fluidized bed apparatus.

Data from the cold-flow model of the system and operating experience from the 5-lb/hr unit were used as the basis for the design. In another aspect of the program, a study of the cracking and coking kinetics of shale oil vapors was continued. A mathematical model was implemented to characterize the important mass transfer effects of the system. This model will be eventually broadened to become a general fluidized bed coking model. In addition, experiments were performed to examine the effects of surface area, initial carbon content and steam treatment on coking activity. From the data that has been collected to-date, it appears that the coking activity of the tested substrates can be explained in terms of porosity (surface area and pore volume) and the initial carbon content of the solid.

The KENTORT II process includes integral fluidized bed zones for pyrolysis, gasification, and combustion of the oil shale. The purpose of this program is to design and test the KENTORT II process at the 50-lb/hr scale. Modifications to the system were completed that improved the start-up burner system and reduced thermal losses. Final shakedown tests were performed that demonstrated gasification zone and combustion zone temperatures of 800 and 900°C, respectively, at a raw shale feed rate of 50 lb/hr. Ash agglomeration and slagging was encountered during some of these tests, and these materials were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis. By limiting the combustion plenum chamber to 1100°C during heat up and by maintaining sufficient solid recycle to the combustor, it is believed that ash agglomeration difficulties will be eliminated.

Book excerpt: It is now well accepted that fluidized bed pyrolysis of oil shale at near-zero hydrogen partial pressure will generate higher than Fischer assay oil yields. This enhancement varies according to shale type, but for most shales, it can be significant. It has been shown that fluidized bed pyrolysis of eastern and western US oil shales can enhance oil yields by 50% and 10% above Fischer assay, respectively. In addition, fluidized bed technology offers the advantages of rapid pyrolysis kinetics (short solid residence time), total use of mined shale, and thermal efficiency. The Center for Applied Energy Research (CAER) has developed a commercial retorting concept, KENTORT 2, which is based on fluidized bed technology. This process has been successfully demonstrated in a 3-inch diameter, 5-lb/hr system at the CAER using eastern US oil shale. This report summarizes the progress made on the development of an integrated multistage fluidized bed retorting process during the period of October 1, 1993 through December 31, 1993. The KENTORT 2 process includes integral fluidized bed zones for pyrolysis, gasification, and combustion of the oil shale. The purpose of this program is to design and test the KENTORT 2 process at the 50-lb/hr scale. Retort shake-down tests were performed this quarter, and during one of these tests, oil was generated for the first time in the 50-lb/hr system. Minor equipment problems were also identified and a remediation plan was implemented.

The design and fabrication of the 50-lb/hr KENTORT II reactor was completed and installation of the process components was initiated. The raw oil shale sample (Cleveland Member from Montgomery County, Kentucky) for the program was mined, prepared, characterized and stored. A preliminary study of KENTORT II-derived oil for possible paving applications was completed, and it was concluded that the shale exhibits acceptable properties as an asphalt recycling agent.
