Book The Impact of Intercollegiate Football Participation on Personal and Social Development of College Upperclassmen

Download or read book The Impact of Intercollegiate Football Participation on Personal and Social Development of College Upperclassmen written by Bart Andrew Tatum and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of intercollegiate athletic participation and personal and social development of student-athletes at a single higher education institution. The football program studied (FPS) has experienced success both competitively and scholastically. A quantitative case study research design was used to study traditional upperclass students. This study sought to investigate the influence of participation in the FPS on personal and social development outcomes, as measured by the Student Developmental Task and Lifestyle Assessment (SDTLA). The independent variable was participation status in the FPS. The independent variable was compared with personal and social development outcomes, the dependent variables. Upperclass students' SDTLA scores were acquired form the Office of Assessment, Information and Analysis at the participating university. Developmental task, subtask and lifestyle scale scores on the SDTLA (dependent variable data) were recorded as T-scores. Univariate analysis of variance and Multiple Analysis of Variance were computed to check for significant SDTLA differences between FPS participants and non-FPS participants. Lastly, discriminant analysis was used to determine if a person's personal and social development outcomes could predict membership in one of the groups, either a FPS participant or non-FPS participant. According to the descriptive analysis of the SDTLA personal and social development outcomes measured in this study, FPS participants scored higher on average than non-participants on every dependent variable. Non-FPS participants scored within the normal developmental range as compared to seniors in the normative population sample on 13 of the 14 personal and social development outcomes. Further, non-FPS participants scored slightly below the normal developmental range on the Emotional Autonomy subtask. FPS participants scored within the normal developmental range on nine (9) of the 14 dependent variables. On the other five (5) dependent variables, FPS participants scored above the normal developmental range as compared to seniors in the normative population sample. The MANOVA revealed no significant differences among FPS participants and non-FPS participants on personal and social development outcomes. Therefore, taking all 14 personal and social development outcomes into account, there is no overall significant difference among FPS participants and non-FPS participants. However, univariate analysis of variance revealed several significant outcomes. FPS participants were significantly more developed than non-FPS participants on five dependent variables. Finally, a discriminant analysis was conducted to determine the ability of the fourteen dependent variables (personal and social development outcomes of the SDTLA) to predict FPS participation status (participant or non-participant). The analysis generated one function that was not significant.

Book excerpt: As a high school athlete transitioning into playing college sports or an individual transitioning into a new career or phase in one's life, know that there will be ups and downs, highs and lows, and pitfalls to overcome. In 3rd & 10/ Overcoming the Pitfalls of Becoming a College Football Player, author Dr. Roosevelt "Bug" Isom, Jr. describes some of the pitfalls pertaining to the game of football, in life, and how to overcome, despite the constant challenges we face. Filled with painful truths, realistic guidance, motivating quotes, and riveting testimonies, 3rd & 10/Overcoming the Pitfalls of Becoming a College Football Player is a must read for all high school and college athletes, specifically football players, men and women, and mothers and fathers who seek guidance for their kids and for themselves on how to persevere, gain strength, grow spiritually, and overcome the pitfalls in life. "A famous Chinese proverb states," To know the road ahead, ask those coming back." In other words, if you want to know what to expect on your journey, take the time to learn from someone who has already been there. My friend, Dr. Roosevelt Isom Jr., has not only traveled the roads that you have begun to navigate, but he is also passionate about sharing the biggest lessons from that journey. Through 3rd & 10, he provides a transparent account of both his triumphs and defeats as a Division I student-athlete. Experience is truly the best teacher; however, not all learning experiences have to be your own. If you are committed to being the absolute best college student-athlete that you can be, I encourage you to read every word in this book with a receptive heart and an open mind. In doing so, you will have the opportunity to unlock your fullest potential in every aspect of your life. In my travels to various schools around the country as a motivational speaker, I constantly encounter young athletes who become their own worst enemies in their pursuit of success. Instead of being intentional about the steps they should take to see long-term success both on and off the field, they rely solely on their athletic talent, expecting all of the right cards to simply fall into place. However, the reality is that only 2% of all high school football players actually make it to the NFL, and many football standouts are prepared for neither the academics of college nor for life once their football careers come to an end. If you utilize the tools provided to you within the pages of this book, you can be confident that you will be able to successfully navigate the waters of being a college football player and overcome any pitfalls that commonly hold student-athletes back from achieving their goals. Dr. Isom is a living testimony of the ups and downs that can occur as a result of your decisions both in the classroom and on the football field. As someone who wants to see you succeed, I urge you to consciously carry each of these powerful lessons with you every day as you transition into college football." Your future self will thank you for it! Raven Magwood, International Speaker, Best Selling Author

Book Relations Among Athletic Identity Foreclosure Career Maturity and Career Exploration in College Student athletes

Download or read book Relations Among Athletic Identity Foreclosure Career Maturity and Career Exploration in College Student athletes written by Christine M. Caldwell and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This study investigated the relationship between athletic identity foreclosure and career development (i.e., career maturity and career exploration) through the use of a sport-specific measure of athletic identity foreclosure. Student-athletes (N = 280) from colleges and universities in the United States provided demographic information and completed the Career Maturity Inventory - Form C, the Career Exploration Survey – Revised, and the Sport-Specific Measure of Identity Foreclosure. Hierarchical regression analyses showed that athletic identity foreclosure was inversely related both to career maturity and career exploration, suggesting that student-athletes who strongly and exclusively commit to their role as athletes fail to explore other non-sport-related career options. Additionally, student-athletes with high levels of athletic identity foreclosure may be less willing and capable of efficiently engaging in vocational tasks than studentathletes who are not in foreclosed in their athletic identity. Limitations of the study, areas for future research, and applied implications are discussed.

Book excerpt: Using narrative data collected through semi-structured phone interviews with eleven graduate(d) student athletes, this dissertation examines participants' academic trajectories and experiences. Theories regarding role-conflict, attribution, college choice and career maturity undergird analysis. Findings are divided into four chapters: Stereotyping, Time, Academic Trajectory, and Graduate Program. Participants' Autonomy and Agency are themes throughout, as are findings regarding the role of institutions in enabling or hindering athletes' ability to excel academically. Findings suggest stereotyping decreased as participants graduated and earned increasing autonomy over their academic lives. By working toward advanced degrees, participants bolstered their own and others' interpretation that football served as a means to an educational end; furthermore, because their graduate status could be read this way, it legitimized the primacy of participants' student role-identities. Several participants recounted early aspirations for higher education, as well as the premeditated intent to use football instrumentally as a pathway to college. Even participants without early degree aspirations tended to revise their narratives about football and education to incorporate similar instrumental framing once those educational opportunities presented themselves. Furthermore, participants took their choice of graduate degree seriously, endeavoring to align graduate programs with their passions and career goals and thereby reinforcing the finding that graduate(d) student athletes' decisions are increasingly independent from athletic considerations. The concluding chapter integrates the findings to form a fuller picture of participants' trajectories, experiences, and the larger phenomenon. Lastly, implications for theory, policy, and practice, as well as directions for future research, are discussed.

Book An Examination of the Athletic Identity Identity Foreclosure and Career Maturity of Division I Collegiate Student athletes in Nonrevenue producing Sports

Download or read book An Examination of the Athletic Identity Identity Foreclosure and Career Maturity of Division I Collegiate Student athletes in Nonrevenue producing Sports written by Stacia A. Klasen and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Very few student-athletes will go on to become a professional in their sport; therefore, the vast majority will need to pursue a non-sport career once their collegiate athletic eligibility has ended. Research indicates that a strong athletic identity and identity foreclosure coincide with lower levels of career maturity, which contributes to the struggle that student-athletes often face with their post-sport transition. The majority of student-athletes compete in nonrevenue-producing collegiate sports (e.g., cross country and soccer), but this subgroup has not been adequately examined. This is problematic because research suggests that lower career maturity levels exist among student-athletes in both revenue- and nonrevenue-producing sports compared to non-athletes. As such, student-athletes in nonrevenue sports also may face career development and preparation challenges. To examine the relationships among athletic identity, identity foreclosure, and career maturity, the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale (AIMS), Extended Objective Measure of Ego Identity Status (EOM-EIS), Career Maturity Inventory Form C (CMI-C), and a demographic questionnaire were completed by NCAA Division I student-athletes who were members of 15 different nonrevenue sports. Latent variable regression analysis was used to address the research questions. Athletic identity was found to be a statistically significant, negative predictor of career maturity, whereby career maturity decreased as athletic identity increased, but a similar relationship between identity foreclosure and career maturity was not discovered. However, a positive correlation between athletic identity and identity foreclosure was found, along with an indirect effect of identity foreclosure on career maturity (with athletic identity as the mediating variable). Additionally, gender, year in school, performance level, and expectations of becoming a professional athlete were not found to moderate the relationships between athletic identity and career maturity, and between identity foreclosure and career maturity. Overall, the current study's findings indicate that athletic identity is an important construct to consider in the career development process of nonrevenue-producing sport student-athletes. The study's limitations are discussed, as well as suggestions for future research.
