Book Socialist Agriculture In Transition

Download or read book Socialist Agriculture In Transition written by Joseph C Brada and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of altered investment priorities, policymakers in socialist countries can no longer increase the resources devoted to agriculture as they have in the past. Instead, they must seek alternative means of improving agricultural performance. One approach has been to change the structure of socialist agriculture and to foster organizational changes within agricultural units. The contributors to this volume evaluate such reforms and weigh their implications for agricultural output and trade. They examine the normless links being introduced in the USSR and compare Soviet experiences with the successes of Chinese and Hungarian reorganizations; describe and analyze the changes being implemented in the German Democratic Republic, Yugoslavia, and Vietnam; and pay particular attention to the role of Polish agriculture in the production crisis and to agriculture's potential for improving Poland's overall economic performance. The contributors also address issues of infrastructure development, the incentives being developed to foster more efficient allocation of resources within the agricultural sector, and the likely growth of East-West and intra-socialist agricultural trade.

Book Organization Performance And System Choice

Download or read book Organization Performance And System Choice written by Michael L Boyd and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-04 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When one has worked on a series of projects as long as I have on those that make up this book, one incurs a tremendous debt that can never be appropriately acknowledged. Nevertheless, I would be remiss if I did not make note of at least the largest and most obvious of contributions made by others. The oldest part of the work is the Yugoslav case study, which began as my doctoral dissertation. I received funding from the International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX), which allowed me to spend an all-too-brief but productive five months in z&greb in 1982. During this time, I was greatly aided by the advice and criticism of Professor Vladimir Stipetic of the University of Zagreb. As I worked on the dissertation, John Pencavel and Evsey Domar taught me much about critical thinking and clear writing, as well as economics. To them I owe a special debt of gratitude for the often difficult task they undertook of simply keeping track of my whereabouts. In addition, the Yugoslav study benefited from the critical contributions of Paul David and members of the development and history seminars at Stanford and the comments of Tim Bates and two anonymous referees and the editor at the Review of Economics and Statistics, where the core material was first published as •The Performance of Private and Cooperative Socialist Organimtion: Postwar Yugoslav Agriculture; 69, 2 (May 1987): 205-214, copyright 1987 by Elsevier Science Publishers. I would like to thank Elsevier Science Publishers for kind permission to reprint portions of this article in chapter 3.

  • Author : Marie-Janine Calic
  • Publisher : Purdue University Press

Download or read book A History of Yugoslavia written by Marie-Janine Calic and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 2019-02-15 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why did Yugoslavia fall apart? Was its violent demise inevitable? Did its population simply fall victim to the lure of nationalism? How did this multinational state survive for so long, and where do we situate the short life of Yugoslavia in the long history of Europe in the twentieth century? A History of Yugoslavia provides a concise, accessible, comprehensive synthesis of the political, cultural, social, and economic life of Yugoslavia—from its nineteenth-century South Slavic origins to the bloody demise of the multinational state of Yugoslavia in the 1990s. Calic takes a fresh and innovative look at the colorful, multifaceted, and complex history of Yugoslavia, emphasizing major social, economic, and intellectual changes from the turn of the twentieth century and the transition to modern industrialized mass society. She traces the origins of ethnic, religious, and cultural divisions, applying the latest social science approaches, and drawing on the breadth of recent state-of-the-art literature, to present a balanced interpretation of events that takes into account the differing perceptions and interests of the actors involved. Uniquely, Calic frames the history of Yugoslavia for readers as an essentially open-ended process, undertaken from a variety of different regional perspectives with varied composite agenda. She shuns traditional, deterministic explanations that notorious Balkan hatreds or any other kind of exceptionalism are to blame for Yugoslavia’s demise, and along the way she highlights the agency of twentieth-century modern mass society in the politicization of differences. While analyzing nuanced political and social-economic processes, Calic describes the experiences and emotions of ordinary people in a vivid way. As a result, her groundbreaking work provides scholars and learned readers alike with an accessible, trenchant, and authoritative introduction to Yugoslavia's complex history.

Book Mathematical Statistical Models for Predicting the Development of Agriculture in the Socialist Federated Republic of Yugoslavia

Download or read book Mathematical Statistical Models for Predicting the Development of Agriculture in the Socialist Federated Republic of Yugoslavia written by T. Galev and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the present time, different mathematical-statistical models for predicting and programming the development of agricultural production are being worked out. They can be combined into three basic groups: models based on regression analysis, models obtained by linear programming and models based on a combination of regression analysis and linear programming. Regression analysis is used primarily to predict the development of specific trends of agricultural production on the basis of analysis of time series and production functions. Models based on regression analysis are especially suitable for working out prediction of the development of individual trends of agricultural development on the international level.
