Book Acoustic Particle Velocity Measurements Using Lasers

Download or read book Acoustic Particle Velocity Measurements Using Lasers written by Jean-Christophe Valière and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book concerns the presentation of particle velocity measurement for acoustics using lasers, including Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV or Anemometry (LDA)) and Particle Imagery Velocimetry (PIV). The objective is first to present the importance of measuring the acoustic velocity, especially when the acoustic equations are nonlinear as well as characterizing the near fields. However, these applications need to use non-invasive sensors. Some optical techniques, initially developed for fluid mechanics, have been adapted to the field of acoustics in recent years. This book summarizes 15 years of research in this area, highlighting the improvements that have been made, particularly in signal processing, and showing applications for which they have proven to be a carrier of innovation.

Book Laser Velocimetry in Fluid Mechanics

Download or read book Laser Velocimetry in Fluid Mechanics written by Alain Boutier and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-01-09 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In fluid mechanics, velocity measurement is fundamental in order to improve the behavior knowledge of the flow. Velocity maps help us to understand the mean flow structure and its fluctuations, in order to further validate codes. Laser velocimetry is an optical technique for velocity measurements; it is based on light scattering by tiny particles assumed to follow the flow, which allows the local fluid flow velocity and its fluctuations to be determined. It is a widely used non-intrusive technique to measure velocities in fluid flows, either locally or in a map. This book presents the various techniques of laser velocimetry, as well as their specific qualities: local measurements or in plane maps, mean or instantaneous values, 3D measurements. Flow seeding with particles is described with currently used products, as well as the appropriate aerosol generators. Post-processing of data allows us to extract synthetic information from measurements and to perform comparisons with results issued from CFD codes. The principles and characteristics of the different available techniques, all based on the scattering of light by tiny particles embedded in the flow, are described in detail; showing how they deliver different information, either locally or in a map, mean values and turbulence characteristics.

Book Laser Doppler Velocimeter and High Speed Imaging System for Fluid Dynamics Combustion and Chemical Kinetics Research

Download or read book Laser Doppler Velocimeter and High Speed Imaging System for Fluid Dynamics Combustion and Chemical Kinetics Research written by Yaw Yeboah and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) system and a high speed imaging system were acquired for the Department of Defense (DoD) Grant N00014-97-1-0511 and setup in the Combustion and Emission Control Laboratory at Clark Atlanta University. These instruments have provided an integrated diagnostic system in the areas of combustion, propulsion, emission control, chemical kinetics and fluid dynamics for time resolved flow visualization and detailed quantitative measurements of flow velocities in complex reacting and non-reacting flows. Research projects supported with the acquired instruments included: turbulent premixed combustion, optimization of non-thermal plasma discharge for pollution control, droplet behavior under supercritical conditions, interaction between acoustic waves and fuel droplets and sprays, and combustion instabilities in ramjet combustors. The instruments will also be used on the precombustion pyrolytic degradation of hydrocarbon fuels under normal and microgravity conditions. Seven (7) undergraduate and graduate students from the Department of Engineering and Department of Chemistry at Clark Atlanta University have, so far, been trained and educated on the instruments. The acquired instrumentation has significantly strengthened the University's research infrastructure, and enhanced CAU's capabilities to undertake research that is relevant to the critical technology areas of DoD. These include the chemical kinetics, combustion and propulsion, and fluid dynamics programs of the Army Research Lab (ARL); the aerodynamics, turbulence and internal flows, air-breathing combustion, space power and propulsion, and physical mathematics and applied analysis programs of the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR); and the turbulence, propulsion and flow structure interactions, and propulsion programs of the Office of Naval Research (ONR).

The book will serve as a valuable reference book in any fluid mechanics laboratory where the laser Doppler or phase Doppler techniques are used. This work reflects the authors' long practical experience in the development of the techniques and equipment, as the many examples confirm.

Book The Use of a Laser Doppler Velocimeter in Supersonic Flow

Download or read book The Use of a Laser Doppler Velocimeter in Supersonic Flow written by William Joseph Yanta and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results are presented for an experimental program which investigated the application of an LDV technique in supersonic flows. This paper presents an analysis of the behavior of light-scattering particles in rapidly accelerating or shock decelerated flows, an evaluation of particle production techniques and the results of several velocity measurements. Measurements included the velocity distribution along the nozzle centerline and flow over a diamond airfoil in a Mach 3 tunnel and velocity profiles for a turbulent boundary layer in a Mach 4.8 facility. It is demonstrated that LDV measurements can be made consistently with errors of less than five percent if the particle lag is considered. (Author).

Book Ultrasonic Doppler Velocity Profiler for Fluid Flow

Download or read book Ultrasonic Doppler Velocity Profiler for Fluid Flow written by Yasushi Takeda and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-08-31 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ultrasonic velocity profile (UVP) method, first developed in medical engineering, is now widely used in clinical settings. The fluid mechanical basis of UVP was established in investigations by the author and his colleagues with work demonstrating that UVP is a powerful new tool in experimental fluid mechanics. There are diverse examples, ranging from problems in fundamental fluid dynamics to applied problems in mechanical, chemical, nuclear, and environmental engineering. In all these problems, the methodological principle in fluid mechanics was converted from point measurements to spatio-temporal measurements along a line. This book is the first monograph on UVP that offers comprehensive information about the method, its principles, its practice, and applied examples, and which serves both current and new users. Current users can confirm that their application configurations are correct, which will help them to improve the configurations so as to make them more efficient and effective. New users will become familiar with the method, to design applications on a physically correct basis for performing measurements accurately. Additionally, the appendix provides necessary practical information, such as acoustic properties.

Book Three Dimensional Velocity and Vorticity Measuring and Image Analysis Techniques

Download or read book Three Dimensional Velocity and Vorticity Measuring and Image Analysis Techniques written by Th. Dracos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1996-10-31 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contents of this volume reflect to a large extent the efforts made by a group of Institutes at the ETH Zürich to develop new techniques for measurements of flows in fluids in the last decade. The motivation came from the study of tr~sport and mixing processes in natural and industrial systems. One of the characteristic properties of turbulence is its high mixing efficiency. The techniques developed are therefore suitable, although not exclusively, for turbulence measurements. They can be subdivided into point-measurements and field-measurements. The aim of the point-measurements developed is to determine the three components of the velocity and all their first derivatives with good temporal resolution and accuracy in turbulent flows. The old and weIl established method of hot-wire anemometry was used for this purpose. One of the main achievements in this context is the construction of miniature multi-wire probes. This technique was introduced to the Institute of Hydromechanics and Water Resources Management of ETH Zürich by Profs. A. Tsinober and E. Kit from Tel-Aviv University. This was made possible by the generous financial support by ETH, for which I would like to express my gratitude on this occasion. In addition, Dr. F.E. Joergensen from DANTEC contributed an example of recent developments in the hardware ofConstant Temperature Anemometry (CTA), for which I am very thankful.

Book Laser Systems in Flow Measurement

Download or read book Laser Systems in Flow Measurement written by Tariq Durrani and published by Springer. This book was released on 1977 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is now well established that laser flow-measuring systems have important advantages over more conventional techniques both for industrial and laboratory applications. These fundamental advantages are indicated by the enormous research effort which has gone into their development over the last decade and by the number of commercial systems which have become available. Although the field is still developing, the most important theoretical results required for relating the system outputs to the fluid flow parameters have now been formulated and a book on the subject therefore seems timely. In the text we have tried to collect together the most important results both from our own papers and from publications by other authors and to present these in a concise and easily readable form. Emphasis has been placed on the fundamental theory and limitations associated with the various techniques rather than on detailed description of specific systems. We have also included a number of new results on areas such as photon counting in turbulent and periodic flows, frequency domain and time domain analysis of laser Doppler velocimeter signals, effect of background noise on system performance, and on cross-correlation techniques for diffusing flows.
