Book excerpt: Excerpt from Detroit Medical Journal, Vol. 5: The Practitioner's Monthly; May, 1905 I will not attempt to describe the country through which the Canal runs, or its location; these are sufficiently well-known from the public discussion of the matter in the daily papers, journals and magazines. It is sufficient to say that it runs through a rolling and well-watered country, with not more marsh than would occur in a similar country in the United States. Physically there is nothing very unusual or very difficult as to its sanitation. At the time of the commencement of the work by the Sanitary Department, in June, 1904, the country controlled by that department had a population of about in Panama, along the Canal between Panama and Colon, and about in Colon. The main object of sanitation was to free this territory from yellow fever, and as much as possible from malaria; and when free, to prevent a re introduction from the outside, of these diseases. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Detroit Medical Journal, Vol. 1: September, 1877 At the meeting of the American Gynecological Society held in Boston, in June last, Dr. Skene read a valuable paper upon The Principles of Gynecological Surgery Applied to Obstetric Operations, in which he called attention to the facility with which craniotomy could be performed by the aid of Sims' spec. Ulum; also to the aid afforded by means of the speculum in ap plying Dr. Thomas' method of treating prolapsus Of the funis. A case was related in which the cord was pushed back by means of sponges, held in long holders through the speculum, and with greater ease and better results than when the cord was reduced in the manner recommended and ordinarily employed. He suggested the use of the same means in the treatment of arm presentation, pushing the presenting part back by means of the sponges through the speculum. Reference was made to cases where Barnes' dilators were introduced through the speculum with greater facility than could be done otherwise. The doc tor also mentioned what he had previously stated of the advan tages of the speculum in introduction of the tampon and in re moving the ovum in retarded abortion. Your reporter for sev eral years has made use of the speculum for the purpose of in troducing the tampon and for removing the ovum in retarded abortion by means of an ovum forceps or scoop, and fully agrees with Dr. Skene in the advantage of the practice he advocates over the Older methods. Yet it is equally true that Nature's con sistency, amounting to uniformity, along certain well-defined lines, may be classed among those eternal verities that form the basis of all true scientific deduction. There is no occasion for surprise, there fore, when we find identical endemic dis eases and similar vegetable growths fur nishing specific antidotes or cures for them, bridging the wide Atlantic, and hav ing their locale and habitat in Africa and America between the same parallels. Such is, in fact, the case; and it seems to be one of those merciful provisions of Provi dence that, somehow, are not so generally recognized by man as they ought to be. What is even less generally recognized, and which it is my purpose to here indi cate, is that the aboriginal races of both continents along these zones have quite independently discovered, and practically applied, like remedies to like diseases.
