Download or read book The Well Spring of the Goths written by Ingemar Nordgren and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2004 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Goths-a rumored people first known by history around the river Vistula in present Poland-was the people that more than other contributed to the fall of the Roman Empire. It was however also the Goths who preserved the Roman culture against other Germanic tribes. Earlier it has been generally assumed the Goths originated in Scandinavia but during the 20th c. many scholars have grown skeptical. The author has, using both Classical and Nordic sources and supplementary sciences, made probable there is an intimate connection between the Goths and the Nordic countries. Consequently it is quite possible that at least part of the Goths have a Nordic origin. The book rests on the basic hypothesis that the Goths are not a people but a number of tribes and peoples united through a common religious/cultic origin. The old dispute concerning the relationship between Svear and Gautar also gets quite a new meaning. The book is interdisciplinary and embraces history, religion, arts, linguistics and archaeology. In 1999 Ingemar Nordgren received his Ph.D. at Odense University, Denmark The book builds to a considerable extent on his dissertation but has been updated and partly rewritten with brand new material.

Download or read book A Comparative Grammar of the Early Germanic Languages written by R.D. Fulk and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2018-09-15 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fulk’s Comparative Grammar offers an overview of and bibliographical guide to the study of the phonology and the inflectional morphology of the earliest Germanic languages, with particular attention to Gothic, Old Norse / Icelandic, Old English, Old Frisian, Old Saxon, and Old High German, along with some attention to the more sparsely attested languages. The sounds and inflections of the oldest Germanic languages are compared, with a view to reconstructing the forms they took in Proto-Germanic and comparing those reconstructed forms with what is known of the Indo-European protolanguage. Students will find the book an informative introduction and a bibliographically instructive point of departure for intensive research in the numerous issues that remain profoundly contested in early Germanic language history.

Download or read book The Oxford Gothic Grammar written by D. Gary Miller and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-24 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a comprehensive reference grammar of Gothic, the earliest attested language of the Germanic family (apart from runic inscriptions), dating to the fourth century. The bulk of the extant Gothic corpus is a translation of the Bible, of which only a portion remains, and which has been the focus of most previous works. This book is the first in English to also draw on the recently discovered Bologna fragment and Crimean graffiti, original Gothic texts that provide more insights into the language. Following an overview of the history of the Goths and the origin of the Gothic language, Gary Miller explores all the major topics in Gothic grammar, beginning with the alphabet and phonology, and proceeding through subjects such as case functions, prepositions and particles, compounding, derivation, and verbal and sentential syntax. He also presents a selection of Gothic texts with notes and vocabulary, and ends with a chapter on linearization, including an overview of Gothic in its Germanic context. The Oxford Gothic Grammar will be an invaluable reference for all Indo-Europeanists, Germanic scholars, and historical linguists, from advanced undergraduate level upwards.
Download or read book Element Order in Old English and Old High German Translations written by Anna Cichosz and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first comprehensive corpus study of element order in Old English and Old High German, which brings to light numerous differences between these two closely related languages. The study’s innovative approach relies on translated texts, which allows the authors to tackle the problem of the apparent incomparability of OE and OHG textual records and to identify the areas of OE and OHG syntax potentially influenced by the Latin source texts. This is especially important from the point of view of OE research, where Latin is rarely considered to be a significant variable. The book’s profile and content is of direct interest to historical linguists working on OE and/or OHG (and Old Germanic languages in general), but it can also greatly benefit several other groups of researchers: scholars applying corpus methods to the study of dead languages, historical linguists generally, linguists researching element order as well as specialists in translation studies.
Download or read book Bibliography of Morphology 1960 1985 written by Robert Beard and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1988-01-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rather than an attempt at an exhaustive bibliography of morphology, this is a collection of major and selected minor works of theoretical interest in the broadest sense. The area of morphology represented here exhaustively is contemporary (generative) theoretical morphology, interpreted broadly enough to include theoretically interesting structuralist works, works aimed at explaining deep motivations of morphology or pertinent to contemporary theoretical morphology. Selected descriptive works have been included as well; it is not at all simple to draw a line between descriptive works of theoretical interest and fundamentally theoretical works, and in addition we hope to provide entry points into a variety languages for morphologists seeking language-specific evidence for general hypotheses.

Download or read book An Annotated Bibliography of North American Doctoral Dissertations on Old Norse Icelandic written by Kirsten Wolf and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kirsten Wolf's annotated bibliographical survey of doctoral dissertations written at North American institutions of higher learning, and treating topics pertaining to Old Norse-Icelandic language, literature, and culture, provides a new tool for basic research. It also offers insight into trends and tendencies in scholarship within the field of Old Norse-Icelandic in the United States and Canada from the last decades of the nineteenth century, when the first doctoral dissertations in the field appeared, to late 1995. Specifically, it demonstrates a gradual shift from studies in language and style, firmly rooted in Germanic philology, to anthropological studies and literary analyses of individual works or themes. Author, director, and institution indices appear at the end of the volume. To facilitate research, Wolf provides a subject index that includes not only titles of works and proper names but also concepts.
