What are the different trajectories in terms of mobility, health, wealth, and family constellations? What are the drivers behind all these changes over time and in the life course? And what are the implications for inequality in society and for social policy? The Swiss Household Panel is a unique ongoing longitudinal survey that has followed a large sample of Swiss households since 1999. This book was released on 2016-11-21 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.

Book Encyclopedia of Quality of Life and Well Being Research

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Quality of Life and Well Being Research written by Alex C. Michalos and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-02-12 with total page 7347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this encyclopedia is to provide a comprehensive reference work on scientific and other scholarly research on the quality of life, including health-related quality of life research or also called patient-reported outcomes research. Since the 1960s two overlapping but fairly distinct research communities and traditions have developed concerning ideas about the quality of life, individually and collectively, one with a fairly narrow focus on health-related issues and one with a quite broad focus. In many ways, the central issues of these fields have roots extending to the observations and speculations of ancient philosophers, creating a continuous exploration by diverse explorers in diverse historic and cultural circumstances over several centuries of the qualities of human existence. What we have not had so far is a single, multidimensional reference work connecting the most salient and important contributions to the relevant fields. Entries are organized alphabetically and cover basic concepts, relatively well established facts, lawlike and causal relations, theories, methods, standardized tests, biographic entries on significant figures, organizational profiles, indicators and indexes of qualities of individuals and of communities of diverse sizes, including rural areas, towns, cities, counties, provinces, states, regions, countries and groups of countries.

Book A Quantitative Model of the Considerations Determining Enlistment and Reenlistment Behavior

Download or read book A Quantitative Model of the Considerations Determining Enlistment and Reenlistment Behavior written by Stuart H. Rakoff and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project was designed to improve the understanding and modeling of the decisions, made each year by thousands of first-term soldiers, to reenlist in the Army or to leave for civilian jobs and school. A model of the reenlistment decision formulated from a decision-analytic perspective was developed, based on an extensive review of the literature in the areas of military personnel, job satisfaction and job change, and decision theory, as well as from focus groups conducted with first-term soldiers at Fort Benning, Georgia. A multicomponent decision-modeling approach incorporating attitudinal, normative, and affective predictors of reenlistment intent was then developed, along with a set of instruments to capture data on these components. Consistent with previous findings for an enlistment task, the analysis of the pilot test data indicated that the three components predicted reenlistment intent in the following rank order: affect, attitudinal, and normative. The results also suggest that the Army has available tools for influencing these reenlistment decisions that are much more varied than the limited set of mainly economic factors that are now predominant in these programs. Specifically, the affective component dominated the economic variables in predicting reenlistment intent for this limited sample of soldiers, and may be an important reenlistment program and policy lever in the future. Keywords: Military personnel, Retention.

Book Determinants of Life Satisfaction

Download or read book Determinants of Life Satisfaction written by Kathleen D. Schoenecker and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The determinants or domains of life satisfaction must be adjusted when considering different age groups. However, the determination of precisely which domains to include for undergraduate college students has yet to be fully explored. The broad purpose of this study was to determine if college students' perceptions are represented on published life satisfaction measurement scales. Participants in this study (n=22) were full-time undergraduates attending a rural Midwestern university. The study addressed the following research questions: 1) What domains are used to measure life satisfaction on published measurement scales? 2) What do undergraduate college students report as being their major determinants of life satisfaction? and 3) Into what order of importance do undergraduate students rank the determinants of life satisfaction? During a series of audio-recorded focus group sessions, students generated 440 determinants of life satisfaction forming 15 thematic clusters. The temporal aspects of satisfaction judgments as well as developmental trends were revealed when evaluating student responses. In order of ranked importance, domains include: 1) Financial Security/Stability; 2) Achievement; 3) Family (of Origin); 4) Spirituality; 5) Self-Image/Values/Doing/Being; 6) Friends & Social Life; 7) Leisure Time; 8) Health; 9) Helping Others; 10) Independence/Ownership; 11) Acceptance/Belonging; 12) Rest; 13) Living Environment/Civics; 14) Romance/Special Relationships; and 15) Parenting. Two domains received over 50% consensus in terms of frequency of selection and importance ranking: Spirituality and Family. Asking the students to generate, rank, and discuss the determinants of life satisfaction produced intriguing information that otherwise may have been overlooked and provided insights pertaining to domains and perspectives which have changed over time. The determinants and insight generated may be highly useful for the refinement of life satisfaction measures for the college age population.
