Book Development of a telemetry system for monitoring piston characteristics inside combustion engines

Download or read book Development of a telemetry system for monitoring piston characteristics inside combustion engines written by Paul Lagaly and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2024-05-06 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project aimed to develop a compact and lightweight telemetry system that mechanically decouples measurements, enabling versatile applications across different measurement scenarios, particularly for pistons and other moving systems. Utilizing an ESP8266, a printed circuit board design was created from individually tested integrated circuits, which formed the foundation for measuring various physical variables. Given the challenging conditions inside a piston of an internal combustion engine, ensuring high robustness was paramount during the electrical engineering process to prevent failures due to high temperatures and acceleration levels. Alongside the installation process for thermocouples, software for energy-efficient measurement with customizable resolution and optional transmission via Wi-Fi or internal storing was developed. Demonstrating feasibility during full-load operation of a heavy-duty diesel engine, the telemetry system with a high-resolution surface thermocouple was integrated in one piston to establish a method for assigning crank angles, enabling measurement and transmission of surface temperatures with crank angle resolution. Further series of measurements, including the use of alternative fuels, were conducted with a third piston, expanding the findings. The outcome is an innovative telemetry measurement device capable of recording experimental data from moving components, potentially expediting market solutions by reducing development times.

Most of book chapters deals with many real cases of telemetry issues which can be used as a cookbooks for your own telemetry related problems.

Book Developing a Data driven Digital Twin Model for Lubricant Oil Transport and Oil Consumption Study in Internal Combustion Engines

Download or read book Developing a Data driven Digital Twin Model for Lubricant Oil Transport and Oil Consumption Study in Internal Combustion Engines written by Xinlin Zhong and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowadays, internal combustion engines face significant challenges stemming from stricter emission regulations and from the introduction of propulsion systems that use alternative energies. Given its wide adoption and its apparent irreplaceability in the short term especially for the heavy duty sector, further efforts are required to reduce engine emissions. An important step towards this ultimate goal is to deepen the understanding of the lubricant oil transport process in the piston ring pack system given that oil consumption is one of the major sources of engine emission. "This thesis aims to develop a baseline Digital Twin model for the piston ring pack system to study oil transport and oil consumption behaviors in an internal combustion engine, operating under the "healthy system" assumption to establish a lower-bound value of the properties of interests. The model uniquely combine a machine-learning based gas flow model to resolve the complex gas flow patterns within the piston ring pack, which is then coupled with a numerical solver to model the long term oil-gas interaction and subsequently determine the oil consumption rates. Extensive parametric study is performed and results of which demonstrate the effectiveness of the model for a wide range of different engine boundary conditions. The model can be used a tool to study how different engine designs and operating conditions influence oil transport and oil consumption, providing a convenient and cost-effective alternative to expensive engine tests. The output of the Digital Twin can be considered as the ultimate goal which future engine designs should strive to achieve.

Book Wireless Telemetry for Gas Turbine Applications

Download or read book Wireless Telemetry for Gas Turbine Applications written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wireless telemetry technology for transmitting power and data to and from sensors located inside a gas-turbine engine is reviewed. Two scenarios are considered: a rotating sensor hardwired to a shaft-mounted, inductively-coupled system; and a stationary or rotating microsensor telemetry module. Applications of these telemetry scenarios in the gas-turbine operating environment, the types of sensor measurements, the principles of telemetry, and a review of the current state of microfabricated components for telemetry systems are given. Inductive coupling for both data and power transmission is emphasized in the first scenario. The microsensor telemetry module discussed in the second scenario would need battery power or an alternative power source. These technologies are emerging and do not represent available products. A brief list of alternative technologies for providing power is presented at the end.

Book Development of In cylinder Pressure Measurement Methodologies for a Single Cylinder Engine

Download or read book Development of In cylinder Pressure Measurement Methodologies for a Single Cylinder Engine written by Swapnil Shireesh Patil and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Internal combustion (IC) engines are vital components of today's automotive industry. They use few of the most complex operating principles and processes. Over the past few decades, there has been an ever increasing demand for top notch vehicle efficiency and performance. The detailed working knowledge of internal combustion engines has thus been a point of interest for many researchers. IC engines basically convert the chemical energy of fluids into mechanical output, by means of a process called combustion. In four-stroke, spark ignition IC engines, ideal pressure-volume diagram is given by the OTTO cycle, which basically gives pressures inside the engine cylinder with respect to piston position. Thus, in order to study combustion, measurement of in-cylinder pressure is a critical task. In this project, a test setup is created, with a single cylinder SI engine being tested. A high pressure spark plug sensor is used to measure pressures inside the engine cylinder. An optical crank angle encoder is mounted on the engine crankshaft to measure accurate crank rotation angle. The objective of the project is to obtain an accurate real time pressure vs. crank angle diagram, which in turn can lead to pressure vs. volume diagram. The changes in the pressure are studied under the effect of various engine parameters. A high capacity system from National Instruments is used for data acquisition purposes. A LabVIEW program is developed from scratch to measure, acquire and write the data. Real time plots of pressure vs crank angle, pressure vs volume can be seen on the LabVIEW front panel. It is observed that the obtained results match with the theoretical representations of the ideal air standard Otto cycle.

Book Description and Operating Instructions for a 7 channel Telemetry System for Physiological Temperatures and the Electrocardiogram

Download or read book Description and Operating Instructions for a 7 channel Telemetry System for Physiological Temperatures and the Electrocardiogram written by David A. Ratino and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous telemetry designs were improved to produce a system specific to the physiological evaluation of the thermal adequacy of space suits. A small seven-channel pulse duration multiplexed telemetry system which transmits an electrocardiogram, rectal temperature with an accuracy better than + or - 0.05C, and five skin temperatures with an accuracy better than + or - 0.2C was constructed. The entire unit is enclosed in a 13 by 10 by 5 cm box worn under the space suit. Components that have become available since construction could reduce this size to one-fifth without sacrificing performance. Three mercury batteries (12 v) power the equipment for 40 hours and provide reliable reception at distances of 90 m. The system is activated by connecting the sensor harness, and the output is checked and calibrated by a 3-position switch. The unit has been tested during exercise studies in space suits and during metabolic experiments on men exercising in cold environments. It provided reliable transmission of accurate temperature and heart rate data for both laboratory and field studies. It has simplified experimental procedures by eliminating all complications of hard wire leads penetrating pressure shells in space suits and by completely freeing the subject in field studies.
