Book The Design and Performance Analysis of an Arbiter for a Multi Processor Shared Memory System

Download or read book The Design and Performance Analysis of an Arbiter for a Multi Processor Shared Memory System written by Shahrukh S. Merchant and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A round-robin arbiter has been designed and implemented for sharing memory in a multi-processor system. A study is made, via analysis and simulation, of the performance of this arbiter under various load conditions. In particular, distributions are obtained for the waiting time of an arriving customer under various load conditions, and expressions are obtained for the idle time distribution and the mean busy time. The effect of a heavy or light user in the midst of other moderate users is also examined, as is the effect of longer guaranteed idle periods by individual customers after a service completion. Many of the results obtained with a round-robin arbiter are compared with those obtained using a First-come, First-served arbiter. In the course of doing this, a simple relation has been found between the waiting time distribution and the distribution of the number of customers in any discrete-time First-come, First-served system with a single work-conserving deterministic server. Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 29 (thesis year 1984) a total of 12,637 theses titles from 23 Canadian and 202 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 29 reports theses submitted in 1984, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Higher Level Hardware Synthesis

Download or read book Higher Level Hardware Synthesis written by Richard Sharp and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-03-12 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid 1960s, when a single chip contained an average of 50 transistors, Gordon Moore observed that integrated circuits were doubling in complexity every year. In an in?uential article published by Electronics Magazine in 1965, Moore predicted that this trend would continue for the next 10 years. Despite being criticized for its “unrealistic optimism,” Moore’s prediction has remained valid for far longer than even he imagined: today, chips built using state-- the-art techniques typically contain several million transistors. The advances in fabrication technology that have supported Moore’s law for four decades have fuelled the computer revolution. However, this exponential increase in transistor density poses new design challenges to engineers and computer scientists alike. New techniques for managing complexity must be developed if circuits are to take full advantage of the vast numbers of transistors available. In this monograph we investigate both (i) the design of high-level languages for hardware description, and (ii) techniques involved in translating these hi- level languages to silicon. We propose SAFL, a ?rst-order functional language designedspeci?callyforbehavioralhardwaredescription,anddescribetheimp- mentation of its associated silicon compiler. We show that the high-level pr- erties of SAFL allow one to exploit program analyses and optimizations that are not employed in existing synthesis systems. Furthermore, since SAFL fully abstracts the low-leveldetails of the implementation technology, we show how it can be compiled to a range of di?erent design styles including fully synchronous design and globally asynchronous locally synchronous (GALS) circuits.

Book Multimedia Multiprocessor Systems

Download or read book Multimedia Multiprocessor Systems written by Akash Kumar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-11 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern multimedia systems are becoming increasingly multiprocessor and heterogeneous to match the high performance and low power demands placed on them by the large number of applications. The concurrent execution of these applications causes interference and unpredictability in the performance of these systems. In Multimedia Multiprocessor Systems, an analysis mechanism is presented to accurately predict the performance of multiple applications executing concurrently. With high consumer demand the time-to-market has become significantly lower. To cope with the complexity in designing such systems, an automated design-flow is needed that can generate systems from a high-level architectural description such that they are not error-prone and consume less time. Such a design methodology is presented for multiple use-cases -- combinations of active applications. A resource manager is also presented to manage the various resources in the system, and to achieve the goals of performance prediction, admission control and budget enforcement.
