Book excerpt: Provides comprehensive coverage of laser-induced ionization processes for mass spectrometry analysis Drawing on the expertise of the leading academic and industrial research groups involved in the development of photoionization methods for mass spectrometry, this reference for analytical scientists covers both the theory and current applications of photo-induced ionization processes. It places widely used techniques such as MALDI side by side with more specialist approaches such as REMPI and RIMS, and discusses leading edge developments in ultrashort laser pulse desorption, to give readers a complete picture of the state of the technology. Photoionization and Photo-Induced Processes in Mass Spectrometry: Fundamentals and Applications starts with a complete overview of the fundamentals of the technique, covering the basics of the gas phase ionization as well as those of laser desorption and ablation, pulse photoionization, and single particle ionization. Numerous application examples from different analytical fields are described that showcase the power and the wide scope of photo ionization in mass spectrometry. -The first general reference book on photoionization techniques for mass spectrometry -Examines technologies and applications of gas phase resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization mass spectrometry (REMPI-MS) and gas phase resonance ionization mass spectrometry (RIMS) -Provides complete coverage of popular techniques like MALDI -Discusses the current and potential applications of each technology, focusing on process and environmental analysis Photoionization and Photo-Induced Processes in Mass Spectrometry: Fundamentals and Applications is an excellent book for spectroscopists, analytical chemists, photochemists, physical chemists, and laser specialists.

Download or read book Time Of Flight Mass Spectrometry written by D. Price and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry contains the proceedings of the First European Symposium on Time-of-flight Mass Spectrometry held at the University of Salford in the UK on July 3-5, 1967. The papers focus on time-of-flight mass spectrometry and its chemical applications, from flash photolysis and pyrolysis reactions to shock wave reactions and high-temperature studies of inorganic solids. This book is comprised of nine chapters and opens with an introduction to the MA-1 and other time-of-flight mass spectrometers, followed by their applications to studies of chemical reactions such as flash photolysis and pyrolysis reactions, reactions involving shock waves, and high-temperature studies of inorganic solids. Subsequent chapters explore fast recording techniques for time-resolved mass spectrometry; detection of the NH2 free radical and other ammoniacal complexes in the electrical discharge decomposition of ammonia gas; and reactions of ions with molecules in the gas phase and the sputtering of solid surfaces by ion bombardment. The use of a time-of-flight mass spectrometer in experimental investigations of negative ions is also described. This monograph will be a valuable resource for users of a time-of-flight mass spectrometer and allow non-users to become acquainted with its applications and advantages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The drift tube of a time-of-flight mass spectrometer has been adapted to serve as a reaction/collision chamber for studying ion dissociation reactions and charge-changing collisions. The methods for identifying the products of such processes depend on shifts in flight times produced by symmetric potential barriers, and are normally used in studying processes in which the mass-to-charge ratio (m/q) of the charged product particle is less than that of its parent. Processes in which the m/q of a charged product is greater than that of its parent represent an interesting special case, since the behavior of the product particle is quite different from that normally encountered. To illustrate this behavior, experimental observations of the 2, 1 charge transfer process N2(++) + N2O = N2(+) + N2O(+) at 6000 ev are presented. (Author).

Download or read book Charge Transfer Studies with a Time of flight Mass Spectrometer written by W. W. Hunt and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The kinetics of charge transfer processes that occur in the drift tube of a time-of-flight mass spectrometer are analyzed, with due regard to attenuation of both ions and neutrals by scattering. The same equation that expresses the charge transfer cross section in terms of experimentally measurable quantities provides for independent determination, from the same experimental measurements, of the difference between the total scattering cross section for the neutrals and that for the ions involved in the charge transfer process being studied. A second, and much simpler, equation for the charge transfer cross section is used when the scattering cross sections for neutrals and ions are the same. Both equations allow for differences in detector response to neutrals compared with that to ions. (Author).

Download or read book The Practice of TOF SIMS written by Alan M. Spool and published by Momentum Press. This book was released on 2016-03-24 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry, TOF-SIMS, is a highly surface sensitive analytical technique that provides information about composition with submicron lateral resolution. For select materials, TOF-SIMS provides unparalleled sensitivity along with excellent reproducibility, and as a mass spectrometric technique, it also provides excellent specificity. Of the analytical methods available, it is among the most surface sensitive, but the physical principles that underlie it are also the least understood. This volume describes the instrumentation, the physical principles behind the technique to the extent they are understood, and provides a practical approach for the interpretation of TOF-SIMS data. The use of advanced data processing methods such as multivariate statistics are described in a readily approachable manner. Given a basic background in undergraduate chemistry and physics, the book will be of use to any student with an interest in the technique.
