Book excerpt: This is a fascinating study which confirms that there is as much support in the Fathers as in heterodox sources - though different - for the idea of a suffering God. Louis Dupre, Yale University Joseph Hallman here makes a significant contribution to the perennial theological dilemma: how can an unchanging God relate to a changing world? The author displays a mastery of the patristic sources as well as familiarity with contemporary philosophical approaches to the issue. The Greek philosophical assumption of the immutability of God has retained a profound influence on Christian thought until modern times despite the attempts of patristic writers to harmonize the Incarnation with God's immutability. Hallman suggests that the most promising resolution to this dilemma comes to us in the work of Whitehead. Carl A. Volz, Luther Northwestern Theological Seminary Hallman's book is unusual and timely. Hallman is a systematic thinker, not a historian, yet he has taken the time to read the early Christian sources attentively, and his conclusions are surprising and provocative. In a sense, this book is a theological version of candid camera: it sets forth those things that early Christian thinkers are not supposed to have said.... In an age in which historians of Christian thought ignore contemporary thinkers, and systematic theologians act as though Christian thought began with the Enlightenment, 'The Descent of God' is a challenge to both brands of obscurantism. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this compelling fantasy from a debut author, two young people must unite two warring cultures to banish the gods who destroyed their homeland. The Fallen Gods' War drove the remnants of a victorious army across the ocean in search of a new homeland. A thousand years later, the lifeless continent of Draegora is largely forgotten, a symbol for the regiments that remain. Demons to some. Protectors to others. The power of their god-touched blades has forged a nation, though many resent their absolute control. Riam and Nola are unknowing descendants of the old world. When it’s discovered they carry enough Draegoran blood to serve in the regiments, they are dragged away from their families to begin training. If they survive, they will be expected to enforce the laws of the covenant, to fight the Esharii tribesmen who raid along the border, and to be judge, jury, and executioners for those accused of crimes. For Riam, who welcomes his escape from an abusive father, the power to protect those who cannot defend themselves is alluring. For Nola, who wishes to return home, it is a betrayal by all she holds dear. Neither is given a choice...and neither may ever get the chance to serve. Lies of Descent begins an epic trilogy of fallen gods, betrayal, and magic—where dark motives often dwell within the true and just, and where the things most feared sometimes lead to salvation.

Book excerpt: We are not alone. Some call them devils or demons. But they are real. They are down there. And they are waiting for us to find them. In a cave in the Himalayas, a guide discovers a self-mutilated body with a warning: Satan exists. In the Kalahari Desert, a nun unearths evidence of a proto-human species and a deity called Older-than-Old. In Bosnia, something has been feeding upon the dead in a mass grave. So begins mankind’s most shocking realization: the underworld is a vast geological labyrinth populated by another race of beings. With all of Hell's precious resources and territories to be won, a global race ensues. Nations, armies, religions, and industries rush to colonize and exploit the subterranean frontier. A scientific expedition is launched westward to explore beneath the Pacific Ocean floor, both to catalog the riches there and to learn how life could develop in the sunless abyss. But in the dark underground, as humanity falls away from them, the scientists and mercenaries find themselves prey not only to the savage creatures, but also to their own treachery, mutiny, and greed. One thing is certain: Miles inside the earth, evil is very much alive.

Book excerpt: The second book in this epic tale of gods and warriors follows two young individuals trying to unite warring cultures to banish the gods who destroyed their homeland. Blood calls to blood. Five years have passed since Riam escaped alone to the southern kingdom of Arillia. Owl Regiment is no more, Master Iwynd is likely dead or imprisoned, and the Draegoran council now rules the north by the point of an often-used blade. Yet despite his grandfather's efforts to see him free of the regiments, a war is building that Riam's heritage will not let him escape. Somehow his brother Lemual stands at the center, feeding the flames. In the tribal lands of the Esharii, Nola's training as a spirit-taker comes to an abrupt end. It is time to make the choice she most fears--unite the tribes against her former homeland or see it torn apart by the very regiments she was destined to serve. But she has walked the ways of the future, and both choices will cost her, and those around her, more than their lives. Together, Riam and Nola must return to the lands of the Covenant to stop a war certain to wake the Fallen Gods.

As the sacred slave of a goddess, Roma is of a lower caste that serves patrons to sustain the balance between gods and men. What she wants is her freedom, but deserters are hunted and hanged, and Roma only knows how to survive in her village where women are vessels without a voice. When her younger brother is condemned to the same wretched fate as hers, Roma must choose between silence and rebellion. Leviathan is the bastard son of an immortal tyrant. Raised in a military city where everyone knows of his blood relation to the persecuted clans, Leviathan is considered casteless. Lowest of the low. Graduating as one of the deadliest soldiers, he executes in his father's name, displaying his worth. When he faces judgement from his mother's people-the clans-Leviathan must confront his demons and forge his own path, if he ever hopes to reclaim his soul. But in the struggle to protect the people they love and rebuild their identities, Roma's and Leviathan's destinies interlock as the tyrant hunts an ancient treasure that will doom humankind should it come into his possession-a living treasure to which Roma and Leviathan are the ultimate key. Set in a colonised Indo-Persian world and inspired by Pre-Islamic Arabian mythology, The Descent of the Drowned is a tale about power, identity, and redemption, and what it takes to hold on to one's humanity in the face of devastation. Book excerpt: Although George William Russell aka A.E., was a poet, painter newspaper editor and political writer, working for three decades in the Irish cooperative movement, he is probably most well known today as a mystic. His writings on the subject resulting from his Hindu and Theosophical studies and his own visionary abilities, are of major importance to all who are interested in the unseen world. This volume contains all A.E.'s known writings on the subject. Not only are the texts of The Candle of Vision, Song and Its Fountains, The Avatars, The Interpreters and Imaginations and Reveries reprinted here, but so also are all his contributions to The Irish Theosophist and other esoteric journals, his introductions and reviews of books, and the interview in Evans Wentz's The Fairy Faith in Celtic Countries. Also included is "The Return," a hitherto unpublished short work that may well have been the start of a book he felt unable to complete, together with an introductory note by Monk Gibbon. This volume, a Collected Edition of A.E, 's works, has an extensive introduction and copious notes by Raghavan lyer and Nandini Iyer which greatly increases the value of this book to the enquiring reader.

Book Sons of the Gods Children of Earth

Download or read book Sons of the Gods Children of Earth written by Peter W. Rose and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-15 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this ambitious and venturesome book, Peter W. Rose applies the insights of Marxist theory to a number of central Greek literary and philosophical texts. He explores major points in the trajectory from Homer to Plato where the ideology of inherited excellence—beliefs about descent from gods or heroes—is elaborated and challenged. Rose offers subtle and penetrating new readings of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, Pindar's Tenth Pythian Ode, Aeschylus's Oresteia, Sophokles' Philoktetes, and Plato's Republic. Rose rejects the view of art as a mere reflection of social and political reality—a view that is characteristic not only of most Marxist but of most historically oriented treatments of classical literature. He applies instead a Marxian hermeneutic derived from the work of the Frankfurt School and Fredric Jameson. His readings focus on illuminating a politics of form within the text, while responding to historically specific social, political, and economic realities. Each work, he asserts, both reflects contemporary conflicts over wealth, power, and gender roles and constitutes an attempt to transcend the status quo by projecting an ideal community. Following Marx, Rose maintains that critical engagement with the limitations of the utopian dreams of the past is the only means to the realization of freedom in the present. Classicists and their students, literary theorists, philosophers, comparatists, and Marxist critics will find Sons of the Gods, Children of Earth challenging reading.

Book Toward A Theology of Scientific Endeavour the Descent of Science

Download or read book Toward A Theology of Scientific Endeavour the Descent of Science written by Christopher B. Kaiser and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2007 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores four foundations of scientific endeavour - the cosmos, human intelligence, cultural beliefs, and technological structures - and investigates some of the paradoxes each of them raises. The concurrent study of all four together reveals several tensions and interconnections among them that point the way to a greater unification of faith and science. Kaiser shows that the resolution of these paradoxes inevitably leads us into theological discourse and raises new challenges for theological endeavour. In order to address these challenges, Kaiser draws on the wider resources of the Judeo-Christian tradition and argues for a refocusing of contemporary theology from the perspective of natural science.
