Book The World Food Situation

Download or read book The World Food Situation written by Pierre R. Crosson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-17 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the beginning of the 1970’s, global grain reserves were level and food prices were low however as the decade progressed crop production plummeted leading to a food crisis. Originally published in the aftermath in 1977, Crosson and Frederick set out to explore the ability of agricultural output to meet the global food demands of future generations. This study analyses how resources and environmental factors would affect food production in developing countries and the United States until the end of the 21st Century. The environmental impacts of land levels, fertiliser and pesticide use are explored in relation to the challenges of meeting food demands. This title will be of interest to students of environmental studies.

This book was released on 2000 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a joint study involving five organisations from both the public and private sectors. The paper begins by briefly reviewing attempts to identify and quantify the factors influencing the growth in demand and supply for agricultural commodities. Several studies that estimate long-term fertlizer use are also reviewed, followed by a discussion of the forecasting methods and data. The results and implications conclude the paper. The study projects growth rates of between 0.7 and 1.3 per cent, depending on assumptions about nutrient efficiency over the next 35 years

Book Fertilizer Producer Pricing in Developing Countries

Download or read book Fertilizer Producer Pricing in Developing Countries written by Edilberto L. Segura and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper focusses on the setting of ex-factory prices for the producers of fertilizers in the developing world. Regardless of whether prices are determined by the free market or by an official agency, to be economically optimal they should perform several objectives: (1) the provision of stimulus to mobilize and allocate adequate resources for fertilizer capacity expansion; (2) encouragement of the optimal choice of process, effective control of feedstock and other operating costs; (3) satisfactory levels of capacity utilization; and (3) where necessary, closure of obsolete, high cost plants. Most developing countries set prices by: (1) reference to the estimated costs of domestic producers; or (2) reference to international market prices. The strengths and weaknesses of alternative approaches are evaluated and practical recommendations made on improving incentives for efficiency in the sector.

However, many developing countries attach a low priority to the subsistence / smallholder sector, particularly in disadvantaged areas. This publication summarizes the information from 21 countries: the crops on which fertilizers are used, the social and structural context, appropriate fertilizer application rates and their profitability, arrangements for supplying fertilizers to farmers and for marketing their produce, credit facilities, and research.
