Book excerpt: “It is time for you to believe me, whether you like it or not. And, when everything happens, don’t be afraid. What you will see is real and not a figment of your imagination. They want you to take them to the children. You will know where to find them. The dolls will show you. Trust them. They are your friends. I created them with a lot of love, much more than you can imagine. If the dolls ask for your help, don’t refuse. Share it with them.” After his grandmother’s strange request shortly before dying, David Forlin, now alone in the world, is faced with an important mission. Whatever it takes, he would keep the promise made to his grandmother; deliver the last three dolls made by her to the chosen children, who live in different States in North America. During David’s journey, he meets each chosen child and his brief interaction with it is able to change his life. And he also finds himself in unimaginable dangers that suddenly appear during his journey. But David will not give up easily until the last doll is delivered to the chosen child. In these difficult days, it is a balm to open this book by Denis Lenzi, in our brief moments of leisure and rest, and be convinced our dreams become reality as we believe them. To discover the magical dolls the world hides, we only have to open our heart and dream.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The man known as Clark Durbin worked for the Comstock National Bank as a consultant in computer programming for over a year. Durbin was described as approximately 65 years old, had a full head of gray hair and a full beard that was also gray. He was approximately six foot tall and was overweight. He had a cheerful demeanor and sparkling blue eyes—the type of individual one was inclined to instinctively trust. This was of course a disguise. He was actually 48 years old, five foot eleven inches tall, weighed 170 pounds, had brown hair, brown eyes, was clean shaven, and his name was not Mark Durbin. After the fraudulent transfer of fifty million dollars to a numbered account in Zurich, Durbin disappeared, leaving no tracks. Jeremiah Jones, a private investigator with a reputation for finding people who don’t want to be found, was contracted by the bank to recover the money and find the thief. The thief’s ability to make himself seemingly invisible challenged Jeremiah’s tracking skills. Tracking is done in the mind as much or more than by following physical or electronic tracks, which in this case were few. After some misdirection, false trails, and bad assumptions, Jeremiah, at a considerable personal risk, successfully located the money and returned it to the bank. However, identifying the thief proved to be even more challenging.

Book excerpt: Being a Deliverer of human souls is a very responsible job, even if it has been thrust upon you against your will when all you’d wanted was a nice, quiet suicide. Obviously, it’s a job you should take seriously, train for exhaustively and carry out meticulously. And if you don’t? Well, maybe you’ll find yourself in an isolated shack in the middle of nowhere living a life of reclusive luxury with supplies that magically replenish themselves and only a cat for company. Until, one day, you realise you should have paid just a bit more attention on arrival in the Transitional State, perhaps even actually attended the training sessions because suddenly you’re required to match a never-ending flow of re-cycled souls to their new parents and you’ve absolutely no idea of how to do it. And maybe, you'll discover you're responsible for the Great Fire of London, the birth of Hitler and the rise of Eva Lyam, the white-supremacist President of the USA who seduces her interviewer live on camera and threatens the world with all out nuclear war. If that happens, maybe you'll be given one last chance to prove yourself or face Eternal Damnation. And then what will you do? Well, maybe you'll get dragged along on a voyage of self-discovery which takes you through a bawdy seventeenth century play, a glitzy 1930s cinema, a hard-right political rally in the American dust-bowl and a re-training programme where you learn sleight of hand and physical metamorphosis after being forced to watch footage of your five previous suicides. And maybe you’ll enlist the help of Death, a dapper, pinstriped-suited individual with an ever-present MacBook, The Voice in Your Head, a verbose and didactic mentor who just won’t ever shut up and a courier named Nick, an Ethereal Being who just happens to be a leather-clad Harley-riding hunk and the sexiest thing you’ve ever laid eyes on. And, as you break every rule in the book in a desperate attempt to SAVE THE WORLD, maybe you’ll find you've saved yourself in the process. Narrated with a quick-fire, quirky humour, this thought-provoking and sometimes moving book explores fundamental contemporary issues around life after death, mental health, politics, gender and enduring love.

Book excerpt: When America and Japan go to war, will Macy’s feelings for her beloved Japanese Friendship Doll change? A moving addition to the Friendship Dolls series. In 1941, eleven-year-old Macy James lives near the Oregon coast with her father, the director of a small museum. Miss Tokyo, one of fifty-eight exquisite friendship dolls given to America by Japan in 1926, is part of the museum’s collection — and one of Macy’s most treasured connections to her mother, who recently passed away. When the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor, many of Macy’s neighbors demand that Miss Tokyo be destroyed. Macy promised her mother that she would take care of the doll, so against her father’s wishes Macy hides Miss Tokyo to keep her safe. But when her brother joins the Navy and devastating news from the war begins to pour in, Macy starts having doubts — does remaining loyal to Miss Tokyo mean being disloyal to America? Bringing the story of the Friendship Dolls forward to World War II, Shirley Parenteau delivers another thoughtful historical novel inspired by a little-known true event.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enter the world of the Delivery Boy, who must peddle his way to 5-star customer ratings—and, perhaps, freedom—in novelist and graphic designer Peter Mendelsund’s The Delivery. Countries go wrong, sometimes, and sometimes the luckier citizens of those countries have a chance to escape and seek refuge in another country—a country that might itself be in the process of going wrong. In the bustling indifference of an unnamed city, one such citizen finds himself trapped working for a company that makes its money dispatching an army of undocumented refugees to bring the well-off men and women of this confounding metropolis their dinners. Whatever he might have been at home, this citizen is now a Delivery Boy: member of a new and invisible working class, pedaling his power-assist bike through traffic hoping for a decent tip and a five star rating. He is decidedly a Delivery Boy; sometimes he even feels like a Delivery Baby; certainly he's not yet a Delivery Man, though he'll have to "man-up" if he wants to impress N.—the aloof dispatcher who sends him his orders and helps him with his English. Can our hero avoid the wrath of his Supervisor, get the girl, and escape his indentured servitude? Can someone in his predicament ever get a happy ending? Who gets to decide? And who's telling this story, anyway? Harrowing and hilarious, The Delivery is a fable for and about our times: an exploration of the ways language and commerce unites and isolates every one of us, native and immigrant both.
