Since then, the technologies employed in hydrocarbon exploration have become extraordinarily sophisticated, yet current exploration for stratigraphic traps is to some extent restricted to areas where seismic data simplifies exploration by allowing direct inference of fluid fill and reservoir development. This Special Publication draws upon contributions that examine current industry perceptions of stratigraphic trap exploration and the technologies, tools and philosophies employed in such exploration, given the changing industry environment. This book contains a collection of papers examining a number of themes related to exploration for stratigraphic traps, ranging from play and risk assessment, through regional assessments of stratigraphic trapping potential, specific exploration programmes targeted at stratigraphic traps to specific working traps and plays where stratigraphic trapping is prevalent.

Neverthe less, all contributions relate to the subject in the widest sense, and the reader should be reminded that much of the heterogeneity reflected by the volume de rives from the fact that it is primarily a research report from a highly inter disciplinary field rather than a textbook.

A total of 78 individuals were in attendance, 47 of which represented the host country, with the remaining 31 traveling from 11 different foreign countries. The four days of presentations were divided into three technical sessions, namely "Shear Zones", "Basement Control On Younger Structures", and "Rifting Midcontinent Rift System". This tripartite conference theme was also employed in the field trip agenda with three excursions being offered, all ably organized by Field Trip Chairman John C. Green. The pre-conference trip set the stage through a two day review of the "Archean and Early Proterozoic Rocks of Northeastern Minnesota". Under beautiful summer skies, 16 sites were visited within the Vermilion district of Minnesota, considered to be the best example of an Archean greenstone belt in the United States. All registrants participated in the mid-conference trip conducted along the gabbroic and volcanic terrain of the "Midcontinent Rift, Northeastern Minnesota".

Larger offsets and velocity anisotropy effects give for instance access to more details on reservoir flow properties like fracture density, porosity and permeability distribution, Elastic inversion and modelling may tell something about the change in petrophysical parameters. Seismic investigations provide a vital tool for the delineation of subtle hydrocarbon traps. They are the basis for understanding the regional basin framework and the stratigraphic subdivision. Seismic stratigraphy combines two very different scales of observation: the seismic and well-control. The systematic approach applied in seismic stratigraphy explains why many workers are using the principles to evaluate their seismic observations. The here presented modern geophysical techniques allow more accurate prediction of the changes in subsurface geology. Dynamics of sedimentary environments are discussed with its relation to global controling factors and a link is made to high-resolution sequence stratigraphy. 'Seismic Stratigraphy Basin Analysis and Reservoir Characterisation' summarizes basic seismic interpretation techniques and demonstrates the benefits of intergrated reservoir studies for hydrocarbon exploration.
