This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "'The Delaney Papers': the history I was taught. Growing up in America, society indoctrinated African-Americans to believe that before the Civil War all Black people were slaves. The term 'free Blacks' was not a concept taught in American education... There were multitudes of free Blacks in the North and even some in the slaveholding South. Martin Delaney was born free in what is now Charleston, West Virginia... When Martin turned 19, he ventured out and moved to Pittsburgh. After setting in, distinguished men... mentored him. These were prominent Black businessmen in Pittsburgh and decorated veterans of the War of 1812. Since his childhood days in Charlestown, Martin despised the institution of slavery and restrictions cast upon free Blacks. During Delany's mentorship he did not know all these aforementioned men, was conductors of the underground railroad, and his adventurous life as a public servant began. This revised, illustrated book is an amazing look into 19th century America that will astound every reader..."--Back cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phallos is a 2004 novel by the acclaimed novelist and critic Samuel R. Delany. Taking the form of a gay pornographic novella, with the explicit sex omitted, Phallos is set during the reign of the second-century Roman emperor Hadrian, and circles around the historical account of the murder of the emperor’s favorite, Antinous. The story moves from Syracuse to Egypt, from the Pillars of Hercules to Rome, from Athens to Byzantium, and back. Young Neoptolomus searches after the stolen phallus of the nameless god of Hermopolis, crafted of gold and encrusted with jewels, within which are reputedly the ancient secrets of science and society that will lead to power, knowledge, and wealth. Vivid and clever, the original novella has been expanded by nearly a third. Appended to the text are an afterword by Robert F. Reid-Pharr and three astute speculative essays by Steven Shaviro, Kenneth R. James, and Darieck Scott.

Book The Delany Papers

  • Pages : 133 pages

Download or read book The Delany Papers written by Martin Delany and published by . This book was released on 2020-07-21 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1852 titled, The Condition, Elevation, Emigration, and Destiny of the Colored People of the United States, Politically Considered. This book first treats on how slavery, proscription, and class oppression has worked throughout "civilization" as we know it. It then explores how slavery in the South and class oppression in the North has worked against black people here in American since the Mayflower. Policies geared toward the subjugation of blacks based of baseless theories and erroneous assertions of their "inferiority" are dashed to bits as Delany presents example after example of incredibly productive, inventive, and courageous black people throughout American History up until the book's release in 1852. Delany also points out the means of which black people can be elevated above their oppressed state. The book details the legitimate claims of colored people to be recognized as naturalized, UNQUALIFIED citizenship, eligible to vote and hold office. Delany gives every article of the infamous FUGITIVE SLAVE LAW and predicts that to abolish this law would mean the end of the National Compact, and a dissolution of the CONFEDERATIVE UNION. Seeing no change in sight, Delany strongly points out that the blacks would never be accepted as unqualified citizens and the only way to escape AMERICAN PROSCRIPTION is to Emigrate to Canada, South or Central America, or yes...Africa. He draws out cohesive and well thought out plans to do it. This book details how America can and should right the wrongs inflicted on an unoffending people. Transcribed, illustrated and forward by Historian Wali Jamal Abdullah.

Book About Writing

Download or read book About Writing written by Samuel R. Delany and published by Wesleyan University Press. This book was released on 2014-09-15 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the four-time Nebula Award–winning novelist and literary critic, essential reading for the creative writer. Award-winning novelist Samuel R. Delany has written a book for creative writers to place alongside E. M. Forster’s Aspects of the Novel and Lajos Egri’s Art of Dramatic Writing. Taking up specifics (When do flashbacks work, and when should you avoid them? How do you make characters both vivid and sympathetic?) and generalities (How are novels structured? How do writers establish serious literary reputations today?), Delany also examines the condition of the contemporary creative writer and how it differs from that of the writer in the years of Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and the high Modernists. Like a private writing tutorial, About Writing treats each topic with clarity and insight. Here is an indispensable companion for serious writers everywhere. “Delany has certainly spent more time thinking about the process of generating narratives—and subsequently getting the fruits of his lucubrations down on paper?than any other writer in the genre. . . . Delany’s latest volume in this vein (About Writing) might be his best yet... Truly, as the jacket copy boasts, this book is the next best thing to taking one of Delany’s courses. . . . [R]eaders will find many answers here to the mysteries of getting words down on a page.” —Paul DiFilippo, Asimov’s Science Fiction “Useful and thoughtful advice for aspiring (and practicing apprentice) authors. About Writing is autobiography, criticism, and a guidebook to good writing all in one.” —Robert Elliot Fox, Professor of English, Southern Illinois University at Carbondale “Should go on the short list of required reading for every would-be writer.” —New York Times Book Review (on Of Doubts and Dreams in About Writing)

Book excerpt: Given that the suns of Draco stretch almost sixteen light years from end to end, it stands to reason that the cost of transportation is the most important factor of the 32nd century. And since Illyrion is the element most needed for space travel, Lorq von Ray is plenty willing to fly through the core of a recently imploded sun in order to obtain seven tons of it. The potential for profit is so great that Lorq has little difficulty cobbling together an alluring crew that includes a gypsy musician and a moon-obsessed scholar interested in the ancient art of writing a novel. What the crew doesn’t know, though, is that Lorq’s quest is actually fueled by a private revenge so consuming that he’ll stop at nothing to achieve it. In the grandest manner of speculative fiction, Nova is a wise and witty classic that casts a fascinating new light on some of humanity’s oldest truths and enduring myths.

Book The Origin of Races and Color

Download or read book The Origin of Races and Color written by Martin Robison Delany and published by Black Classic Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the books authored by Martin R. Delany (1812-1885), The Origin of Races and Color is perhaps the most obscure. Out-of-print until now, it has been available to the public only through select libraries. At the time of its publication in 1879, this valuable resource presented a bold challenge to racist views of African inferiority. Delany wrote in opposition to a developing oppressive intellectualism that used Darwin's thesis, "the survival of the fittest," to support its demented theories of Black inferiority. Skillfully blending biblical history, archaeology and anthropology, Delany offered evidence to the "serious inquirer" suggesting the first humans were African, and that these Africans were ". . . builders of the pyramids, sculptors of the sphinxes, and original god-kings. . . ." With such radical assertions, Delany advanced a model of ancient history that contradicted the very foundation of intellectual racism. He believed knowledge of one's past was essential, and that it could provide Black people with the regenerative force necessary to inspire their self-improvement. Were he alive today, Delany would certainly feel at home with the present generation of Africancentrists, especially since he developed and articulated so many of their arguments more than a century ago.
