Book The Nucleation and Development of a Recrystallised Structure

Download or read book The Nucleation and Development of a Recrystallised Structure written by N. B. W. Thompson and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an attempt to determine the mechanism of recrystallisation in zinc, the modes of deformation, which occur at high temperatures when a bicrystal of zinc is sheared along its grain boundary, are being investigated. Towards this end, apparatus for growing bicrystals has been designed and built. Single crystals of zinc, for use as seed crystals, have been grown. Work is progressing towards a method of casting very pure zinc in a bicrystal mould and for seeding the polycrystalline casting for the growth of bicrystals of closely controlled orientation. Techniques for optical, electron microscopical and X-ray diffraction examination of the structure of the bicrystal are currently being developed. (Author).

Book Some Aspects of Deformation in Single Crystals and Bicrystals of Aluminum at Elevated Temperatures

Download or read book Some Aspects of Deformation in Single Crystals and Bicrystals of Aluminum at Elevated Temperatures written by RICHARD H. BUSH and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was made to evaluate the kinematics of grain boundary shear and to compare the results pertaining to crystallographic deformation with those reported in the literature. Melt-grown single crystals and bicrystals of high purityAl were tested in tension at extension rates of 8.20 x 10 to the -6th power to 10 to the -4th power cm/sec (strain rates of approximately 2.3 to 230%/hr) and at temperatures of 538 to 650 C. The bicrystal samples contained pure, symmetrical tilt or twist boundaries of 10, 32, 40, 88, and 90 degrees. Continuous stress and total extension and intermittent shear displacement data were obtained as a function of time. A yield point phenomenon which is caused by a small amount of pre-test deformation was observed for single crystals and to a reduced extent for bicrystals. Its presence is explained by a model based upon dislocation multiplication and the stress dependent velocity of dislocations. A yield stress for grain boundary shear which is associated with a thermally activated process was also observed. (Author).

Book Microstructural Design of Advanced Engineering Materials

Download or read book Microstructural Design of Advanced Engineering Materials written by Dmitri A. Molodov and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-07-17 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The choice of a material for a certain application is made taking into account its properties. If, for example one would like to produce a table, a hard material is needed to guarantee the stability of the product, but the material should not be too hard so that manufacturing is still as easy as possible - in this simple example wood might be the material of choice. When coming to more advanced applications the required properties are becoming more complex and the manufacturer`s desire is to tailor the properties of the material to fit the needs. To let this dream come true, insights into the microstructure of materials is crucial to finally control the properties of the materials because the microstructure determines its properties. Written by leading scientists in the field of microstructural design of engineering materials, this book focuses on the evolution and behavior of granular microstructures of various advanced materials during plastic deformation and treatment at elevated temperatures. These topics provide essential background and practical information for materials scientists, metallurgists and solid state physicists.

Book Mechanical Properties and Deformation Behavior of Materials Having Ultra Fine Microstructures

Download or read book Mechanical Properties and Deformation Behavior of Materials Having Ultra Fine Microstructures written by M. Nastasi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an attempt to meet the demand for new ultra-high strength materials, the processing of novel material configurations with unique microstructure is being explored in systems which are further and further from equilibrium. One such class of emerging materials is the so-called nanophased or nanostructured materials. This class of materials includes metals and alloys, ceramics, and polymers characterized by controlled ultra-fine microstructural features in the form oflayered, fibrous, or phase and grain distribution. While it is clear that these materials are in an early stage of development, there is now a sufficient body of literature to fuel discussion of how the mechanical properties and deformation behavior can be controlled through control of the microstructure. This NATO-Advanced Study Institute was convened in order to assess our current state of knowledge in the field of mechanical properties and deformation behavior in materials with ultra fine microstructure, to identify opportunities and needs for further research, and to identify the potential for technological applications. The Institute was the first international scientific meeting devoted to a discussion on the mechanical properties and deformation behavior of materials having grain sizes down to a few nanometers. Included in these discussions were the topics of superplasticity, tribology, and the supermodulus effect. Lectures were also presented which covered a variety of other themes including synthesis, characterization, thermodynamic stability, and general physical properties.

Book Magnetically and Capillary Driven Grain Boundary Motion in Zinc Bicrystals

Download or read book Magnetically and Capillary Driven Grain Boundary Motion in Zinc Bicrystals written by Christoph Günster and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2013-06-05 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
