Download or read book Defenders of the Faith written by Judith Bleich and published by Academic Studies PRess. This book was released on 2020-04-21 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Emancipation of European Jewry during the nineteenth century led to conflict between tradition and modernity, creating a chasm that few believed could be bridged. Unsurprisingly, the emergence of modern traditionalism was fraught with obstacles. The essays published in this collection eloquently depict the passion underlying the disparate views, the particular areas of vexing confrontation and the hurdles faced by champions of tradition. The author identifies and analyzes the many areas of sociological and religious tension that divided the competing factions, including synagogue innovation, circumcision, intermarriage, military service and many others. With compelling writing and clear, articulate style, this illuminating work provides keen insight into the history and development of the various streams of Judaism and the issues that continue to divide them in contemporary times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prayer is without a doubt a very important part of ministry for every believer and the church especially in the days we are living. When we pray we come to understand the mind and redemptive will of our Lord for our lives, specific situations, and the will of God for our family, church, community and nation. "The Church's greatest deficiency today is in power not in programs, strategies, materials or ideas. And power for ministry can be released only through prayer." Prayer should not be mechanical or burdensome. But fulfilling, powerful, consistent, relevant, cutting edge and a benefit for all; it is our desire for every person who uses this prayer journal to receive a fresh impartation in your prayer life that will infuse His Glory and breathe, and His love into your relationships. We anticipate the rewards that will come to you when you use this prayer journal and while you make a commitment to discipline your life in prayer.

Download or read book Defenders of the Faith written by Samuel C. Heilman and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this first in-depth portrait of ultra-Orthodox Jews in Israel today, Samuel Heilman introduces a community that to many may seem to be the very embodiment of the Jewish past. To outsiders who stumble upon these neighborhoods and find bearded men in caftans, children with earlocks, and women in long dresses, black kerchiefs and stockings, it may appear that these people still hold fast to every tradition while turning their backs to the contemporary world. But rather than being a relic from the past, ultra-Orthodox Jews, or haredim, are very much part of the contemporary landscape and are playing an increasingly prominent role in the Jewish world and in Israeli politics. Defenders of the Faith takes us inside the world of this contemporary fundamentalist community, its lifestyle and mores, including education, religious practices and beliefs, sexual ethics, and marriage. Heilman explores the reasons why this group is more militant and extreme than its pre-Holocaust brethren, and provides insight into the worldview of this small but influential sector of modern Jewry.

Book excerpt: The fifth book in the Aletheia Adventure Series is the second in a trilogy about an attack on the city of Aletheia, the city of Bible Truth. In this story, the Water of Sound Doctrine has been polluted, the city boundaries are overcome, and the city has been invaded by the people and creatures of the land of Err. The land of Err is desperate to change the Truth the city stands for: they set to work to 'improve' the roads and buildings; they camp on the Pray-Always Farmlands; they introduce a new, appealing religious message; and they badly want to access the centre of Aletheia and takeover the mighty fortress Academy of Solders-of-the Cross and other important buildings there. But something stands in their way. Mysteriously, all the inhabitants of central Aletheia have vanished and the buildings will not yield to them. Is the fight for the city over? Or is there a greater, unseen power that the land of Err knows nothing about? Will Aletheia be victorious against such fearful and determined enemies? Will Bible Truth stand against the invaders? Follow the adventures of familiar characters and children from earlier Aletheia books as they go underground, back to the foundations of Aletheia beneath the cross, and pray and plan to overcome their enemies. Through the story, this book explores Biblical truth. This book can be enjoyed on its own - without reading the rest of the series.

This book was released on 1990-07-05 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of women's spirituality and Christian mysticism demonstrates that women have been influential religious leaders even without benefit of priestly ordination and theological training. St. Catherine of Siena and St. Teresa of Avila are examples of women with visionary gifts of tremendous power. A less well-known Spanish visionary is Sor María of Santo Domingo, a Dominican tertiary of peasant lineage who became so famous for her raptures, austerities, and prophecies that the king, a cardinal, and nobles considered her a living saint. In 1948 research in the archives of the University of Zaragoza uncovered The Book of Prayer of Sor María of Santo Domingo (originally published around 1518) which had gone unnoticed for centuries. The text includes some of Sor María's ecstatic utterances and representations, and is a first-hand look at a women who in many ways is as representative of the early years of sixteenth century Spain as St. Teresa was of the later years. Giles' book provides the first English translation of this text as well as a study of Sor María and the issues that pushed her into the limelight.

Download or read book Deus in Machina Religion Technology and the Things in Between written by Jeremy Stolow and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this volume explore how two domains of human experience and action--religion and technology--are implicated in each other. Contrary to commonsense understandings of both religion (as an "otherworldly" orientation) and technology (as the name for tools, techniques, and expert knowledges oriented to "this" world), the contributors to this volume challenge the grounds on which this division has been erected in the first place. What sorts of things come to light when one allows religion and technology to mingle freely? In an effort to answer that question, Deus in Machina embarks upon an interdisciplinary voyage across diverse traditions and contexts where religion and technology meet: from the design of clocks in medieval Christian Europe, to the healing power of prayer in premodern Buddhist Japan, to 19th-century Spiritualist devices for communicating with the dead, to Islamic debates about kidney dialysis in contemporary Egypt, to the work of disability activists using documentary film to reimagine Jewish kinship, to the representation of Haitian Vodou on the Internet, among other case studies. Combining rich historical and ethnographic detail with extended theoretical reflection, Deus in Machina outlines new directions for the study of religion and/as technology that will resonate across the human sciences, including religious studies, science and technology studies, communication studies, history, anthropology, and philosophy.
Download or read book Religious Horror and Holy War in Viking Age Francia written by Matthew Bryan Gillis and published by Trivent Publishing. This book was released on 2021-12-31 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religious Horror and Holy War in Viking Age Francia explores how authorities in western Francia used horror rhetoric to cast Christian soldiers, who robbed the poor and the church, as monsters that devoured human flesh and drank human blood. Adapting modern literary horror approaches to medieval sources, this study reveals how such rhetoric served as a form of spiritual weaponry in the clergy's attempts to correct and condemn wayward military men. This investigation, therefore, unearths long-forgotten Carolingian thought about the dreadful spiritual reality of internal enemies during a time of political division and the Northmens depredations. Yet such horror also informed a new understanding of Christian heroism that developed in relation to the wars fought against the invaders. This vision of heroic soldiers, which included military martyrs, culminated in ideas about holy war against the pagans. Thus Carolingian religious horror and holy war together belonged to a body of ideas about the spiritual, unseen side of the church's cosmic conflict against evil that foreshadowed later medieval Crusading thought.
