Book excerpt: Remembering The Deer Creek Round-Up When I was a kid I discovered a large, and very old, manila envelope tucked away in the back of my Aunt Carol's closet. Inside were photos, letters and financial statements all dating back to the 1920s. Sixty years later that envelop and its contents opened an amazing door into my family's history. The result is this book. The Deer Creek Round-Up really started as the Northern California Round-Up. The Northern California Round-Up Association had it in the back of their mind to promote rodeos throughout northern California. However, it never happened the way they planned and the Deer Creek Round-Up, as it was known to all of the participants and fans, was its only promotion. The story of this amazing rodeo, its roots and its legacy, are documented in the pages of this book. Almost all of what's presented here was taken from that old manila envelope. This rodeo was way ahead of its time; nothing like it had ever been attempted in far northern California. As fate would have it, its greatest accomplishment was setting into motion the wheels that founded the Red Bluff Round-Up.

Book excerpt: The stunning true story of a murder that rocked the Mississippi Delta and forever shaped one author’s life and perception of home. “Mix together a bloody murder in a privileged white family, a false accusation against a Black man, a suspicious town, a sensational trial with colorful lawyers, and a punishment that didn’t fit the crime, and you have the best of southern gothic fiction. But the very best part is that the story is true.” —John Grisham In 1948, in the most stubbornly Dixiefied corner of the Jim Crow south, society matron Idella Thompson was viciously murdered in her own home: stabbed at least 150 times and left facedown in one of the bathrooms. Her daughter, Ruth Dickins, was the only other person in the house. She told authorities a Black man she didn’t recognize had fled the scene, but no evidence of the man's presence was uncovered. When Dickins herself was convicted and sentenced to life in prison, the community exploded. Petitions pleading for her release were drafted, signed, and circulated, and after only six years, the governor of Mississippi granted Ruth Dickins an indefinite suspension of her sentence and she was set free. In Deer Creek Drive, Beverly Lowry—who was ten at the time of the murder and lived mere miles from the Thompsons’ home—tells a story of white privilege that still has ramifications today, and reflects on the brutal crime, its aftermath, and the ways it clarified her own upbringing in Mississippi.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fabulous XIT Ranch has been celebrated in song, story, and serious history. This book of reminiscences of old XIT cowmen puts on record the everyday life of the individuals who made the ranch run. Their forthright, yet picturesque, discussion of ranching hardships and dangers dissipates Hollywood and TV glamorizing. They relate in honest cowboy language what actually happened inside the XIT's 6,000 miles of fence. Cordia Sloan Duke, wife of an XIT division manager, Robert L. Duke, many years ago realized that only those who had experienced ranch life could depict it with deep understanding. As the young wife of a rising young ranch hand, she kept in her apron pocket a notebook and pencil, recording all manner of interesting details as they caught her attention. This diary was the nucleus for the present book. Conceiving of an account of life on the XIT as presented by XIT cowboys, Mrs. Duke set about drawing from reticent, sometimes reluctant, ranch hands the impressions of the XIT (occasionally written down by their more literate wives or daughters) which they had retained through the years. Cordia Sloan Duke and Joe B. Frantz have organized the reminiscences around key aspects of ranch life, retaining the language of the cow hands.

Book excerpt: This is a fictional, short western story. The story begins in the current day of 2017 while at a cowboy competition shoot, dressed in an era custom representing 1860 to 1899 with two replica revolvers, a rifle, and shotgun representing the era. Then due to an event occurring during a competition shoot, the story's main character is flipped back in time to 1880. Once in the past, now our main character must adapt to the era without injecting 2017 into the 1880s. Being in the past means the main character is dealing with the day's good guys, bad guys, and is able to help a family through hard times before he's flipped back into his time of 2017.

Book California Standoff

Download or read book California Standoff written by Michele Shover and published by Stansbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-12-04 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Butte County mining camps and foothill farms were an active front in the California Indian wars. Using centuries-old tribal tactics, Butte Creeks, the Mountain Maidu tribelets’ warriors, resisted settlers’ seizures of their territories. Making a strategic shift, in 1857, they acquired bases in the neighboring Yahi’s Deer Creek Canyon. They merged with renegades and Yahi fighters, called Mill Creeks, whose raids had terrified Maidu and Tehama County farmers through the mid-1850s. Meanwhile, quarrels between miners and farmers and with John Bidwell continued as Civil War loyalties undermined unity against the Indian raiders, now out of Deer Creek. In 1863, Bidwell urged the Interior Department to expunge Butte County of all the Maidu—except his own workers, mostly Mechoopda Maidu. After centuries of self-governance, this independent tribelet had to labor for him on their own historic territory. A few Mechoopdas, remembering the dignity of autonomy and self-sufficiency, joined in Mountain Maidu raids on Bidwell’s ranch. Bloody Butte County conflicts culminated in 1865 with that county’s final round of Indians’ and settlers’ mutual retaliatory killings. "A richly informative investigation of a tragic episode." --Kirkus Reviews

Book excerpt: Tehama County--its name is a mystery but its sense of place is not. The county portrays a friendly Norman Rockwell-like America, with everything from May Day picnics and parades to fall harvests, rugged lumbermen, tough cowboys, and rodeo roundups. Carved out of three Northern California counties in 1856, Tehama County is largely rural, with fertile open spaces dominated by ranching and agriculture. To the east and west are lofty mountains and deep-set canyons sculpted by fast-moving streams to delight recreationists. These streams tumble into the mighty Sacramento River that courses through the middle of the county on its way to the Pacific Ocean. While rural, Tehama County has a rich and colorful heritage reflected in its people. Some of the more notable residents have included Ishi, a Yahi Indian considered the last of his people; William B. Ide, commander in chief of the brief Bear Flag Republic; and railroad magnate and governor of California, Leland Stanford, who built the largest vineyard and brandy distillery in the world here.
