Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Decapoda of the Siboga Expedition, Vol. 1: Family Penaeidae The Penacidae collected by the Siboga Expedition ought to be considered as a most valuable contribution to our knowledge of these interesting animals and to the Fauna of the East Indian Archipelago. No less than 54 species and 2 varieties have been collected and of the species 19 or 20 proved to be new to science. Of the 34 or 35 already known species only 13 or 14 have been observed formerly in this Archipelago. The deep-sea investigations especially have been of great importance. A rather large number of species, viz. about 24, have been captured in the great depths and abysses of the sea, but of these species only 3 were already known to occur in the Archipelago, viz. Aristeus semidentatus (Sp. Bate), Haliporus neptunus Sp. Bate and Haliporus Lucasii (Sp. Bate), species collected formerly by the "Challenger." The genus Benthesicymus Sp. Bate is only represented by one species, but of the remarkable genus Gennadas Sp. Bate two species were obtained, both new to science; no species of Gennadas were hitherto known from the Archipelago, except Genn. Bouvieri Kemp, described only in 1909, a form observed West of Manila at 2100 fathoms and North of New Guinea at 1100 fathoms. Of the new Hemipenacus Sibogae a fine full-grown female was collected at a depth of 1000 meter. Very remarkable is the discovery of the -new Haliporus Sibogae, a species living at depths between 400 and 521 meters, and of which at four Stations more than 50 well preserved specimens, mostly adult, were captured: this interesting species belongs to the largest representatives of this genus, the male attaining a length of 165 mm., while the female becomes 175 mm. long. Halip. Sibogae appertains to a Section, that hitherto was still unknown in the Indopacific. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Siboga-Expeditie, Vol. 9: The Siphonophora of the Siboga Expedition The enormous difficulties which accompany any attempt at systematic definition and description of preserved specimens of the very delicate Siphonophora have been forcibly insisted upon by Chun in the preface to his work on the Siphonophores of the Plankton expedition (1897). These difficulties are increased by the fact that the different forms and species are as yet in so many respects still very imperfectly known and have often been insufficiently described. Moreover the literature of the subject is already very extensive (120 different titles are cited in our list) and many articles are neither lucid nor exhaustive. Papers that have been written by authors who have examined living specimens are often very difficult to interpret for those wo find themselves restricted to observations on preserved material. We have attempted to become acquainted with the specimens of former expeditions as far as they are vet to be found in the different Museums. Of the Challenger SipJionopJiora the British Museum contains no further remnants than a certain number of specimens of Rliodalia niiratida Hkl. Of all the other species described in Haeckel sbulky volume - also of his own private collection - no traces are left. We were informed by the Curator, Mr. R. Kirkpatrick, that Prof. Haeckel had written to him, that a great number had been submitted to anatomical investigation and that the rest had been in an unsatisfactory state of preservation. This may explain their present deficiency. We have also examined specimens that are contained in the Musee d' Histoire Naturelle in Paris, in the Berlin Museum, in the Museum at Leipzig University and in the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Cambridge, Mass. and in the aquaria of the Zoological Station at Naples. Book The Stylasterina of the Siboga Expedition Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Stylasterina of the Siboga Expedition Classic Reprint written by Sydney J. Hickson and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Stylasterina of the Siboga Expedition The association of the genus Millepora with the family Stylasteridae in one Order of the Hydrozoa called the Hydrocorallina is not justified by recent investigations of their anatomy. Apart from the fact that Millepora agrees with the Stylasteridae in forming a continuous coenosteum of calcium carbonate and exhibits dimorphism of the zooids, it has no characters in common with them. On the other hand in the structure of the nematocysts, the structure of the dactylozooids, the general characters of the coenosteum and its relations to the soft parts Millepora shows no close relationship to the Stylasteridae. Finally the discovery made by one of us) that the male and female sexual cells of Millepora are borne by free-swimming medusae of a very distinct and definite type necessitates the separation of this genus from the other Hydrozoa and the establishment of a new sub-order for its reception. It appears to us that to express more accurately the relations of the old group Hydrocorallinae, Millepora should be placed in an Order Milleporina situated in our system next to the Hydromedusae, whilst the family Stylasteridae should be placed in an Order Stylasterina situated near to the Trachymedusae.
