Book excerpt: This Life Guide is designed for use in conjunction with the Generation One music CD (www.profilesproject.com) in either group or individual study. In group settings, the Life Guide lends itself favorably to a small group ministry of a church, as well as a sermon series a pastor might devote to the lives of the apostles. If the Life Guide is used in a small group setting, it will become apparent that the material on each disciple is perhaps more than can be covered in one meeting, so the group leader may want to select what he or she thinks are the most relevant and appropriate questions for the group's discussion. Similarly, if a pastor chooses to preach a series on the lives of the apostles, although he will want to do his own Biblical studies, he will find a wealth of information in the Life Guide biographical sections on each of the apostles. Again, for the needs and interests of his church, he may choose to tailor his messages to cover key aspects of a disciple's life as it best fits the needs and interests of his church. For each of the disciples in the Life Guide, a biography of each disciple is given, followed by discussion questions (Discussion) which seeks to address different Biblical themes taken from each of the disciple's lives. These questions are then followed by quotes (Expressions) from various authors in the Christian tradition that generally relate to the themes previously addressed in the discussion questions. Following the quotes, several Scriptural passages are provided (Meditations) for further reflection on each disciple. Each study then closes with an opportunity to prayerfully reflect (Reflections) on certain attributes exhibited by that apostle, in terms of gratitude, mindset, and a personal aspiration.

Someone killed his star chemistry professor, in his laboratory right on campus, no less, after filling his nose up with cocaine. To make matters worse, the suspect list includes Weathers' boss, Provost John Martin, and Professor Linda Harmon, chair of the chemistry department. Weathers finds a silver lining, however, when it becomes clear that Lieutenant Annette Trieri, head of the investigations unit of the Durango Police Department, seems as interested in him as he is in her. But this mutual interest is misunderstood by whoever killed the professor, because now they are trying to kill Weathers, and, for good measure, Trieri as well. Together, the couple manages to stay alive while unraveling the chemistry professor's murder and uncovering a second, more sinister killing to which Weathers is also connected. Campus politics and drug money are a lethal combination in The Dean's Murders.

Book Please Don t Kill Me

Download or read book Please Don t Kill Me written by William C. Dear and published by Crossroad Press. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I don't care who you hire, or what the company has to pay him … so long as he's the best there is." This anguished cry from the wife of murder victim Dean Milo would draw private investigator Bill Dear into one of the most frustrating and ultimately triumphant cases of his career. Dean Milo was a phenomenally successful businessman who had built a tiny family business into a $50 million-a-year corporation. Along the way he had established a lengthy list of enemies that began with his immediate family and stretched throughout the social and business community. His fast-track ride to the top came to a violent halt on August 11, 1980, when Milo was found dead in his luxurious Ohio home, shot twice in the head. A blank telegram form lay nearby. Four months after his death, the investigation remained a confusing collection of non sequiturs. Clues pointed toward Milo's involvement with the Mafia, the drug world, and the gay community. His own family refused to cooperate with the author¬ities. And time was ticking by … In desperation, Maggie Milo turned to Texas private eye Bill Dear. This is the gripping story of the remarkable collaboration between Dear and the police detectives of Akron, Ohio, that led to eleven convictions, an Ohio record. It is also a tale of the human weakness, desperation, and overwhelming greed that led to a sudden death.

Book The Case of the Murderous Dr Cream

Download or read book The Case of the Murderous Dr Cream written by Dean Jobb and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chilling true-crime story of the Victorian era’s deadliest doctor “When a doctor does go wrong, he is the first of criminals,” Sherlock Holmes observed during one of his most puzzling murder investigations. Incredibly, at the time the words of the world’s most famous fictional detective appeared in print in the Strand Magazine, a real-life Canadian doctor was stalking and murdering women in London’s downtrodden Lambeth neighbourhood. Dr. Thomas Neill Cream had been a suspect in the deaths of two women in Canada, and had killed as many as four people in Chicago before he arrived in London in 1891 and began using pills laced with strychnine to kill prostitutes. The Lambeth Poisoner, as he was dubbed in the press, became one of the most prolific serial killers in history. In this fascinating book, Dean Jobb reveals how bungled investigations, corrupt officials and failed prosecutions allowed Cream to evade detection or freed him to kill, again and again. The first complete account of Dr. Cream’s crimes and his many victims explores how the stifling morality and hypocrisy of the Victorian era allowed this monster to poison vulnerable and desperate women, many of whom had turned to him for medical help. It offers an inside account of Scotland Yard’s desperate search for a killer as brazen and efficient as Jack the Ripper.

Book excerpt: While in Stratford, widow Sheila Malory always stays with her old friend, actor David Beaumont. On this visit she finds him in dire straits: his career is on the skids and his finances are in ruins. Unless he can convince his penny-pinching brother Francis to sell their jointly owned family home in the seaside village of Taviscombe, the bank will repossess his cottage. Francis, Dean of the Culminster Cathedral, does not believe that charity begins at home. He refuses to put the house on the market or provide a loan. Mrs. Malory offers David a place to stay in her own home in Taviscombe so that the two brothers might meet in person to find a solution. Even if Francis can be persuaded to sell, one impediment remains: their ancient and addled nanny has been told that she can stay in the home until she dies. Even after Nana's sudden death, Francis insists that they hold on to the property. When he dies from consuming high tea laced with poison, the police conclude that both deaths were murder. Unfortunately David is their prime suspect. Determined to clear her friend's name, Mrs. Malory applies her considerable skills as an amateur sleuth to identify the real culprit. She has seen her share of evil, but even Mrs. Malory is shocked by what her investigation turns up. Death of a Dean is the seventh of Hazel Holt's Mrs. Malory mysteries.

ANTHONY LUKAS BOOK PRIZE NATIONAL BESTSELLER Named One of The Best Books of 2020 by NPR's Fresh Air * Publishers Weekly * Marie Claire * Redbook * Vogue * Kirkus Reviews * Book Riot * Bustle A Recommended Book by The New York Times * The Washington Post * Publisher's Weekly * Kirkus Reviews* Booklist * The Boston Globe * Goodreads * Buzzfeed * Town & Country * Refinery29 * BookRiot * CrimeReads * Glamour * Popsugar * PureWow * Shondaland Dive into a "tour de force of investigative reporting" (Ron Chernow): a "searching, atmospheric and ultimately entrancing" (Patrick Radden Keefe) true crime narrative of an unsolved 1969 murder at Harvard and an "exhilarating and seductive" (Ariel Levy) narrative of obsession and love for a girl who dreamt of rising among men. You have to remember, he reminded me, that Harvard is older than the U.S. government. You have to remember because Harvard doesn't let you forget. 1969: the height of counterculture and the year universities would seek to curb the unruly spectacle of student protest; the winter that Harvard University would begin the tumultuous process of merging with Radcliffe, its all-female sister school; and the year that Jane Britton, an ambitious twenty-three-year-old graduate student in Harvard's Anthropology Department and daughter of Radcliffe Vice President J. Boyd Britton, would be found bludgeoned to death in her Cambridge, Massachusetts apartment. Forty years later, Becky Cooper a curious undergrad, will hear the first whispers of the story. In the first telling the body was nameless. The story was this: a Harvard student had had an affair with her professor, and the professor had murdered her in the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology because she'd threatened to talk about the affair. Though the rumor proves false, the story that unfolds, one that Cooper will follow for ten years, is even more complex: a tale of gender inequality in academia, a 'cowboy culture' among empowered male elites, the silencing effect of institutions, and our compulsion to rewrite the stories of female victims. We Keep the Dead Close is a memoir of mirrors, misogyny, and murder. It is at once a rumination on the violence and oppression that rules our revered institutions, a ghost story reflecting one young woman's past onto another's present, and a love story for a girl who was lost to history.
