Book Ani la

Download or read book Ani la written by Joke van de Belt and published by Sidestone Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'No, but we are different. Tonpa Sherab treated men and women in the same way, he passed on his teachings to both men and women and that is why we nuns are on equal footing with the monks, quite unlike the Buddhists.' The Bön religion is often seen as a part of the Tibetan Buddhism but its bond is actually far more complex and has its own origin in the history of Tibet. The role of women worshipping in Bön and Tibetan Buddhism, is quite different. And although there are studies on Buddhist nuns, there is hardly any research available on nuns in the Bön tradition. This pioneering study vividly portrays the nuns of the Redna Menling monastery in Dolanji (India), the headquarters of the Bön religion, in exile. It focuses on the developments of the Bön in exile, the specific context in which Bön nuns live and how the monastic tradition takes shape. It provides interesting insights into the monastic community in exile, the historic context of the Bön religion as well as the personal motives to become a nun.

Book Ho omos Monastery

Download or read book Ho omos Monastery written by Edda Vardanyan and published by Peeters. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The monastery of Horomos is situated on the right bank of the Axurean river, about 5 km as the crow flies to the north-east of Ani, the Armenian "city of 1000 churches". When the monastery was founded (c. 930), Ani was still little more than a fortress. Soon, however, Ani grew into a royal city (960) and the seat of the Catholicos (992), while the humble monastic congregation became the "rest place of the Kings", the chaplaincy of the capital, an important cultural centre and showcase of Bagratid architecture. It continued to develop and prosper up to the end of the 13th century. From the 19th century onwards, the site was visited by learned travellers, who described the monuments and transcribed their inscriptions. About 1910, the famous historian of Armenian arts, T'oros T'oramanean, drew complete plans and elevations of the extant buildings, with a detailed account of their decoration. In 1920, however, Turkey annexed the province of Kars and Horomos was included in a military zone, inaccessible to archaeological research. Only in 2013 and 2014, were Armenian visitors able to penetrate the site again and to take new photographs of monuments and inscriptions. The present volume, with contributions by six authors, takes a fresh look at the site, providing exhaustive updated information. A comprehensive study of the history of the monastic congregation from the 10th to the 20th century is followed by a general survey of the architecture, a detailed examination of a new kind of monastic structure, the zamatun, endowed with rich symbolic decoration, a decipherment of the crosses and xac'k'ars, a review of the manuscript output of the scriptorium, and finally, an epigraphic corpus providing both a photograph and a drawing for each extant inscription, thus ensuring a much more complete and reliable text than in all previous editions and translations.

Book The Universal History of Step anos Tar nec i

Download or read book The Universal History of Step anos Tar nec i written by Tim Greenwood and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-06-02 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Universal History (Patmutʻiwn tiezerakan) of Stepʻanos Tarōnecʻi is a history of the world in three books, composed by the Armenian scholar at the end of the tenth century and extending from the era of Abraham to the turn of the first millennium. It was completed in 1004/5 CE, at a time when the Byzantine Empire was expanding eastwards across the districts of historic Armenia and challenging key aspects of Armenian identity. Stepʻanos responded to these changing circumstances by looking to the past and fusing Armenian tradition with Persian, Roman, and Islamic history, thereby asserting that Armenia had a prominent and independent place in world history. The Universal History was intended to affirm and reinforce Armenian cultural memory. As well as assembling and revising extracts from existing Armenian texts, Stepʻanos also visited monastic communities where he learned about prominent Armenian scholars and ascetics who feature in his construction of the Armenian past. During his travels he gathered stories about local Armenian, Georgian, Persian, and Kurdish lords, which were then repeated in his composition. The Universal History therefore preserves a valuable narrative of events in Byzantium, Armenia, and the wider Middle East in the second half of the tenth century. This volume presents the first ever English translation of this work, drawing upon Manukyan's 2012 critical edition of the text, and is also the first study and translation of the Universal History to be published outside Armenia for a century. Fully annotated and with a substantial introduction, it not only provides an accessible guide to the text, drawing on the most up-to-date scholarship available, but also offers valuable new insights into the significance of an often overlooked work, the intellectual and literary contexts within which it was composed, and its place in the Armenian tradition.

They were first published in New York in 1989, enlarged and reprinted in India in 2004, but in this edition now appear for the first time complete and unabridged in the definitive version as prepared by the author, Malcolm Tillis, who travelled the length and breadth of India to collect them during the 11 years he lived in this extraordinary country. They were given by Westerners from different cultures and backgrounds who had also been drawn to the India of mystics and gurus in search of spiritual fulfilment. Their adventures, hardships, goals, attainments and their different spiritual practises are discussed in depth. There are also many humorous incidents we can enjoy and relate to. Several of those interviewed have since become well known as writers, some have become gurus themselves with their own followers, a few have reached iconic status.
