Download or read book My Life With Lions Tigers Bears Elephants written by Joe T. Frisco and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-05-02 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is my story. It may sound unbelievable but it is all true. My story starts in 1945 in Flushing, New York in Queens. My mother and father were divorced when I was two years old. I lived with my mother until I was eight years old. My dad came to see me on the weekends. He and I would go to the race tracks and watch the horses run. He knew a lot of people at the race tracks. This was a fun time. I met a lot of jockeys and trainers when I was nine years old. About this time I became hard for my mother to handle and she sent me to live with my dad. We lived in rooms at my grandfather’s apartment building. This is the beginning of my story.

Book Living a Metaphysical Life A Mother s Legacy for Her Family

Download or read book Living a Metaphysical Life A Mother s Legacy for Her Family written by Marsha Moore and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-08-19 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part memoir, part love letter, part journey into metaphysics. I did not set out to live a metaphysical life. All I wanted was to lead a normal life. Because of all the unusual circumstances surrounding my childhood, I wanted normalcy more than anything. But sometime during my young life I began to have dreams and precognitions. These experiences changed my reality forever, gave me the courage to journey to my soul, and led me on a voyage through metaphysics in an attempt to understand my psychic life. This book records my journey, including life events, contemplations, psychic dreams and religious experiences. I lived part time with a Baptist family early in life, followed by years of Catholic school education from grade school through high school. Studying metaphysics in my twenties exposed me to Eastern philosophy. Ultimately, I was able to reconcile my psychic experiences and Eastern perspectives with my Catholic beliefs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first history of the bulldozer and its transformation from military weapon to essential tool for creating the post-World War II American landscape Although the decades following World War II stand out as an era of rapid growth and construction in the United States, those years were equally significant for large-scale destruction. In order to clear space for new suburban tract housing, an ambitious system of interstate highways, and extensive urban renewal development, wrecking companies demolished buildings while earthmoving contractors leveled land at an unprecedented pace and scale. In this pioneering history, Francesca Russello Ammon explores how postwar America came to equate this destruction with progress. The bulldozer functioned as both the means and the metaphor for this work. As the machine transformed from a wartime weapon into an instrument of postwar planning, it helped realize a landscape-altering "culture of clearance." In the hands of the military, planners, politicians, engineers, construction workers, and even children's book authors, the bulldozer became an American icon. Yet social and environmental injustices emerged as clearance projects continued unabated. This awareness spurred environmental, preservationist, and citizen participation efforts that have helped to slow, though not entirely stop, the momentum of the postwar bulldozer.

Book Hal Borland s Book of Days

Download or read book Hal Borland s Book of Days written by Hal Borland and published by Echo Point Books & Media, LLC. This book was released on 2022-06-23 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oftentimes the answers to life’s biggest questions can be found by searching for them at the smallest scales. In Book of Days, beloved nature writer Hal Borland (1900–1978) takes readers on an eye-opening day-by-day journey through a year of the outdoor world around us. Originally published in The New York Times as “daily reflections,” these short reports and observations convey Borland’s inspiring thoughts about the world around him and the creatures he shared it with. He also muses about the changes in weather and climate through the seasons, reflects on our traditions and habits, and ponders fundamental questions about what it all means. Writing in the tradition of Henry David Thoreau and Aldo Leopold, and with the inquisitiveness of a philosopher and the perceptive wit of a wise old New England farmer, Borland portrays with simple clarity the elements of change and permanence in the untamed world around us. Neither calendar nor almanac, this delightful natural history “daybook” of mini essays features a treasure trove of fascinating philosophical insights and environmental wonders. Book of Days can be read straight through or savored one day at a time. Be sure to also read Hal Borland's other bestselling classics published by Echo Point Books—Hal Borland's Twelve Moons of the Year and Sundial of the Seasons.

Book The Color Revolutions

Download or read book The Color Revolutions written by Lincoln A. Mitchell and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2012-06-22 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From late 2003 through mid-2005, a series of peaceful street protests toppled corrupt and undemocratic regimes in Georgia, Ukraine, and Kyrgyzstan and ushered in the election of new presidents in all three nations. These movements—collectively known as the Color Revolutions—were greeted in the West as democratic breakthroughs that might thoroughly reshape the political terrain of the former Soviet Union. But as Lincoln A. Mitchell explains in The Color Revolutions, it has since become clear that these protests were as much reflections of continuity as they were moments of radical change. Not only did these movements do little to spur democratic change in other post-Soviet states, but their impact on Georgia, Ukraine, and Kyrgyzstan themselves was quite different from what was initially expected. In fact, Mitchell suggests, the Color Revolutions are best understood as phases in each nation's long post-Communist transition: significant events, to be sure, but far short of true revolutions. The Color Revolutions explores the causes and consequences of all three Color Revolutions—the Rose Revolution in Georgia, the Orange Revolution in Ukraine, and the Tulip Revolution in Kyrgyzstan—identifying both common themes and national variations. Mitchell's analysis also addresses the role of American democracy promotion programs, the responses of nondemocratic regimes to the Color Revolutions, the impact of these events on U.S.-Russian relations, and the failed "revolutions" in Azerbaijan and Belarus in 2005 and 2006. At a time when the Arab Spring has raised hopes for democratic development in the Middle East, Mitchell's account of the Color Revolutions serves as a valuable reminder of the dangers of confusing dramatic moments with lasting democratic breakthroughs.

Book If Einstein Ran the Schools

Download or read book If Einstein Ran the Schools written by Thomas Armstrong Ph.D. and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2019-10-11 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many world-class thinkers and creators have been concerned about the state of education in the United States. Discover their thoughts on how children really learn and what teachers must do to optimally tap children's latent abilities. During the last three decades, education reformers have pushed standardized testing and policies like No Child Left Behind and Common Core to improve test scores and proficiency in basic skills. However, during this period that author Thomas Armstrong calls the "miseducation of America," a number of troubling trends have surfaced, including a decrease in creative thinking scores among children in kindergarten through third grade. Rather than focus on what's wrong with the education system that has produced these outcomes, Armstrong lays out what creative thinkers know about how children should be educated. In an extended thought experiment, he asks what would happen if we turned the reins of educational policy over, not to the politicians and educational bureaucrats, but to eminent thinkers and creators like Albert Einstein, Pablo Picasso, Martin Luther King Jr., Rachel Carson, Doris Lessing, Jane Goodall, and other seminal culture-builders. What might they say about the best way to educate a child? If Einstein Ran the Schools suggests that the answers to this intriguing question should guide future efforts to reform our nation's schools.
