Combining orthodox Muslim prayer, dress, and practice with secular education, relative gender equality, and Internet use, this community serves as a surprising reminder that the central values of "modernity" are hardly limited to the West.

Download or read book The Upstairs Wife written by Rafia Zakaria and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2016-01-05 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A memoir of Karachi through the eyes of its women An Indies Introduce Debut Authors Selection For a brief moment on December 27, 2007, life came to a standstill in Pakistan. Benazir Bhutto, the country’s former prime minister and the first woman ever to lead a Muslim country, had been assassinated at a political rally just outside Islamabad. Back in Karachi—Bhutto’s birthplace and Pakistan’s other great metropolis—Rafia Zakaria’s family was suffering through a crisis of its own: her Uncle Sohail, the man who had brought shame upon the family, was near death. In that moment these twin catastrophes—one political and public, the other secret and intensely personal—briefly converged. Zakaria uses that moment to begin her intimate exploration of the country of her birth. Her Muslim-Indian family immigrated to Pakistan from Bombay in 1962, escaping the precarious state in which the Muslim population in India found itself following the Partition. For them, Pakistan represented enormous promise. And for some time, Zakaria’s family prospered and the city prospered. But in the 1980s, Pakistan’s military dictators began an Islamization campaign designed to legitimate their rule—a campaign that particularly affected women’s freedom and safety. The political became personal when her aunt Amina’s husband, Sohail, did the unthinkable and took a second wife, a humiliating and painful betrayal of kin and custom that shook the foundation of Zakaria’s family but was permitted under the country’s new laws. The young Rafia grows up in the shadow of Amina’s shame and fury, while the world outside her home turns ever more chaotic and violent as the opportunities available to post-Partition immigrants are dramatically curtailed and terrorism sows its seeds in Karachi. Telling the parallel stories of Amina’s polygamous marriage and Pakistan’s hopes and betrayals, The Upstairs Wife is an intimate exploration of the disjunction between exalted dreams and complicated realities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a well documented analysis of the Karimjee Jivanjee family and the family business, Karimjee Jivanjee & Co. Drawing from a variety of sources, including interviews with the Karimjee family and associates, the author offers a comprehensive, fascinating biography that spans over 200 years. The Karimjee family has played a major role in shaping the political and economic history of Zanzibar and Tanzania, with close ties to the British and German Empires, as well as the African Independence Movements. Although heavily affected by the nationalization programmes of the late 1960's, they have since recovered and are now back in business. Much more than a 'rags to riches' story, it is an account of East Africa told through the eyes of the family of a South Asian settler. --Book Jacket.

This book was released on 2015-10-22 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania have minorities from the Indian sub-continent amongst their population. The East African Indians mostly reside in the main cities, particularly Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Mombasa, Kampala; they can also be found in smaller urban centres and in the remotest of rural townships. They play a leading social and economic role as they work in business, manufacturing and the service industry, and make up a large proportion of the liberal professions. They are divided into multiple socio-religious communities, but united in a mutual feeling of meta-cultural identity. This book aims at painting a broad picture of the communities of Indian origin in East Africa, striving to include changes that have occurred since the end of the 1980s. The different contributions explore questions of race and citizenship, national loyalties and cosmopolitan identities, local attachment and transnational networks. Drawing upon anthropology, history, sociology and demography, Indian Africa depicts a multifaceted population and analyses how the past and the present shape their sense of belonging, their relations with others, their professional and political engagement.

In Arabic Oration: Art and Function, a narrative richly infused with illustrative texts and original translations, Tahera Qutbuddin presents a comprehensive theory of this preeminent genre in its foundational oral period, 7th-8th centuries AD. With speeches and sermons attributed to the Prophet Muḥammad, ʿAlī, other political and military leaders, and a number of prominent women, she assesses types of orations and themes, preservation and provenance, structure and style, orator-audience authority dynamics, and, with the shift from an oral to a highly literate culture, oration’s influence on the medieval chancery epistle. Probing the genre’s echoes in the contemporary Muslim world, she offers sensitive tools with which to decode speeches by mosque-imams and political leaders today.

Download or read book Diversity of Islamic Thought Coming to Terms written by Pervaiz Asghar and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-10-22 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The one issue that intrigued me during my formative years was not so much the tendency to inherit one's religious beliefs, but the vigour with which one tended to defend one's own turf, while belittling the similarly inherited beliefs of others. It seemed to me that if there was but one standard answer as to the correctness of a specific belief system, all thinking minds should have gravitated towards this obvious solution. The religion of Islam, which stands for 'submission to the will of God' and for 'peace' is unfortunately in the spotlight for quite some time for all the wrong reasons. The volatile mix of religion, which is moralistic in character, and politics, which is opportunistic in nature, is precisely what has been afflicting Islam since the times of the early Umayyad and Abbasid dynasties. In the way that it is practised, Islam is by no means a monolithic faith, nor is it simplistically divided into the Sunni and Shia belief systems, as commonly perceived. Apart from politically inspired causes, differences primarily stem from interpretation, which spill over from the Quranic domain to the field of Prophetic traditions (Hadiths). The centrality of the Prophet Muhammad (saw) to the religion of Islam cannot be ignored, as the Quran not only extols him as a 'perfect exemplar' and as a 'mercy to all mankind', but repeatedly exhorts the believers to 'obey Allah' and 'obey His Prophet' in the same breath. The authenticity of the Prophets' traditions is however exclusively based, as per the Sunni Muslim perspective, on the chain of transmission, rather than its subject matter. Considering that there were literally tens of thousands of fabricated traditions floating around by the time concerted efforts for their collection were initiated, it seems surprising that many, if not most, Islamic scholars have used 'hadiths' to supplant rather than supplement the word of God. The diversity in Islamic thought over the ages is on display in this book. The first seven chapters explore the origins and spread of ideologies like the Khwarjis, the Abadis, the Kaysannia, the Murjiyya, the Jabbariyyah, the Qadariyyah, the various Sufi silsilas, the four Sunni 'madhabs' (Hanafis, Malikis, Shafiis, Hambalis), the Mutazillites, the Maturidis, the Asharis, the Ahle Quran, the twelver Shias and other Shia denominations (the Mukhtariyah, the Alawis, the Zaidis, the Ismailis, the Mustalians, the Nizaris, the Tayyibis, the Hafizis, the Dawoodi Bohras), the radical reformist ideologies of Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn Abd al Wahhab and in our very own backyard, the Deobandi, Tablighi Jamaat, Ahle Hadith, Barelvi and Ahmadi movements of 19th century colonial India. The subsequent chapters are devoted to an analysis of the pitiful state the Islamic community finds itself in, prior going on to offer meaningful recommendations for coming out of this morass. In general, Islamic reformation can only come about by seeking enlightenment from the Quran, while a meaningful understanding of the Quranic message in turn is dependent on a recourse to the faculty of reason, a theme which is seen to resonate throughout the Book of Divine Guidance. The Quran's message has unfortunately become so distorted at the hands of its practitioners that it has become difficult to discern the basic principles that it espouses: maintaining unity, adopting the path of moderation, enjoining what is just, forbidding what is evil, avoiding transgression, oppression and profane talk, enduring with fortitude, displaying mercy, rendering charity, clinging to the truth and rejecting falsehood: there can indeed be no better code of conduct. The community of Islam can thus only reclaim its rightful place in the comity of nations if it 'holds fast to the rope of Allah' by 'enjoining what is just' and 'forbidding what is evil', for, as the Quran puts it, 'truth stands clear from error'.

When Sharifa accompanies her husband on a marriage-saving trip to India in 2016, she thinks that she’s going to research her great-great-grandfather, a wealthy business leader and philanthropist. What captures her imagination is not his rags-to-riches story, but the mystery of his four wives, missing from the family lore. She ends up excavating much more than she had imagined. Sharifa’s trip coincides with a time of unrest within her insular and conservative religious community, and there is no escaping its politics. A group of feminists is speaking out against khatna, an age-old ritual they insist is female genital cutting. Sharifa’s two favourite cousins are on opposite sides of the debate and she seeks a middle ground. As the issue heats up, Sharifa discovers an unexpected truth and is forced to take a position.
