Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relive through reminiscing and remembering, a Maine pastor's recollections of boyhood experiences that turned into a minister's messages in old age. After five decades (Barry's first message was preached in 1966), travel back in time with a lifelong Maineaic to his home place, the Blackstone homestead of Perham, Maine. What sparked these homilies was his inheritance of seven acres of the family farm, homesteaded in 1861, and the receiving of his grandparent's house built in 1924 at the death of his Uncle Paul. You will probably come to the same conclusion as this coastal Maine pastor--that his seminary training began long before he attended a Bible school in South Carolina in the early 1970s. Flash back with him to the 1950s and 1960s when spiritual lessons were everywhere on his rural potato and dairy farm. Pastor Blackstone didn't know it then, but realizes now that he was surrounded by family Bible teachers and friendly Biblical instructors that eventually would inspire this series of sermons. Homestead Homilies is a collection of scriptural observations inspired by a dog named Rover, an uncle named Read, a moonlit night, a barnyard hedge, a day plowing, a grandmother's helpful hand, a bee hive, a simple prayer, a sparrow's song, and many more simple events in a past age where homilies were being preached and now eventually heard. It is the author's prayer that these simple sermons will provoke the reader to remember long lost messages from their distant past.

Download or read book Rover written by Barry Blackstone and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-10-06 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Walk again in your childhood with a favorite animal friend as Pastor Blackstone remembers his boyhood and best friend: a dog named Rover and their adventures together. This series of remembrances and reminisces of a canine companion after over a half a century of time was invoked by an adulthood best friend, a cat named Eddie (highlighted in his own book--Meows from the Manse). Rover: A Boy's Best Friend is a mental stroll through memory lane when the author was much younger and the world of his family's homestead was open for exploration and expedition with a mostly black German Shepherd and Collie mix at his side. Travel with these best friends through the four seasons of nature covered in white and green and brown; through the forest paths of north Perham, a tiny agriculture community in Aroostook County, Maine; through the fields and the pastures of a 720-acre dairy and potato farm as they encounter woodland creatures of every sort and barnyard animals of every kind; through meadows and mornings and moonsets that years later form wonderful illustrations and spiritual lessons for the young man who would grow up to become a pastor for nearly a half century. You will hear from Rover himself as he barks out sermons that will stand the test of time, and homestead homilies that will rebuke and reprove as the author makes a modern application to a boyhood experience with his dog. Sit back and read and recall your own "dog tales," or "cat tales" if that is your favorite animal, as you travel again with "a lad and his Lassie," with a "shaver" and his Rin Tin Tin, through the early years of life when your best friend was a dog named Rover!

Book The Ordering of Time

  • Pages : 184 pages

Download or read book The Ordering of Time written by Arno Borst and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a concise history of the use and interpretation of time, written by one of the foremost medievalists in Europe today. Arno Borst examines the various ways that time has been calculated by numbers and measured by instruments over several centuries, from the computus—an ancient method of determining times and dates—to the present-day computer. In a wide-ranging discussion, he analyzes the classical Greek concepts of divine, natural, and human time; the universal time of ancient Rome; the Easter cycle of the Middle Ages; the development of the mechanical clock in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries; early modern chronology; and twentieth-century data processing. Borst argues that although many centuries and countless different instruments—sundials, horologia, abaci, astrolabes, calendars, and calculating machines—separate the medieval computus from the modern computer, each generation has had to answer the same question: how can we make the best use of our available time to improve our lives? The computer, he suggests, is merely a new instrument employed for an ancient purpose. Lively and accessible, The Ordering of Time will be welcomed by students and researchers in social and cultural history, the history of science and mathematics, as well as anyone interested in the history of time and numbers.

Book Bodyrhythms

Download or read book Bodyrhythms written by Lynne Lamberg and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronobiology--the study of body time--may revolutionize your life. Bodyrhythms by veteran medical writer Lynne Lamberg is a comprehensive, eminently readable report on advances in maximizing daily alertness, avoiding errors at work and on the highway, and treating mood and sleep disorders and other illnesses. It is no accident, Lamberg says, that the Exxon Valdez, Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, and Bhopal disasters occurred at night. Or that doctors, nurses, pilots, truckers, train engineers, and other workers make more mistakes--sometimes fatal mistakes--on the night shift. Unlike many other countries, the United States has no laws governing work and rest hours that acknowledge that when people sleep may be even more crucial than how long they sleep in determining their performance and well-being. Bodyrhythms makes a compelling argument for workplace reforms.

Book Beachglass

  • Publisher : St. Martin's Press
  • Release : 2007-04-01
  • ISBN : 1429901691

Download or read book Beachglass written by Wendy Blackburn and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Delia entered treatment for drug and alcohol addiction at age seventeen, her life changed completely: she immersed herself in AA, began to heal old family wounds, and developed a whole new outlook on herself, on spirituality, on relationships. Out of the rubble, she built a life for herself that any recovering woman would be proud of: a loving husband, a beautiful daughter, her own brand of hard-won wisdom. But her long-term sobriety is put to the test when she receives a phone call from her gay best friend, Timothy. Fulfilling a pact they made a decade prior, Delia tears herself away from her new life in Seattle and rushes home to Los Angeles, to Timothy's bedside, facing the one thing she fears her sobriety cannot survive—losing him. Back in LA, Delia begins to encounter familiar people, places, and temptations...a barrage of memories that makes her stop and sort through her past, looking for the courage she knows she needs now more than ever. As her past catches up with her present, she sees that she has not merely survived her losses and mistakes, but has been made stronger because of them. This understanding comes to her in full as she holds a piece of beachglass in her hand and realizes that it is its scuffs and scrapes that give it its quiet splendor, its imperfections that give it its beauty and individuality, and that it is from being tossed and tumbled that it no longer shatters—and she knows the same goes for her too. Set against a backdrop of West Hollywood in the late 1980s, populated by a drag queen and a stripper, beautiful boys and artists, and told by a narrator with equal doses of self-deprecating humor, old-soul awareness, fallibility, and brutal honesty, Beachglass is a gritty and uplifting story of recovery, a journey that presents a fresh look into the world of AA and offers a convincing rendering of the constant struggle to go into recovery and stay there—no matter what. In this stunning debut novel, Wendy Blackburn writes of the transformative power of love—for others and oneself—and about friendship, about forgiveness, about redemption.

Book American Life During the Industrial Age

Download or read book American Life During the Industrial Age written by Alexis McCrossen and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-12-11 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the Industrial Age (1860–1914), bringing together published and archival primary sources with introductory essays that contextualize a period of extraordinary social, cultural, and economic transformation. The Industrial Age’s developments, which included electricity, internal-combustion engines, moving assembly lines, and clock time, posed as much risk and opportunity as do today’s innovations. Today artificial intelligence, terrorism, climate change, and the threat of pandemics like Covid-19 threaten our safety and sense of well-being, just as machine production, the labor movement, toxic chemicals and waste, and epidemics like tuberculosis and cholera posed significant challenges in the Industrial Age. This modern and innovative collection features tried and tested topics, such as immigration and labor, along with underexplored ones, such as electricity, abundance, and contaminants. Each chapter includes a historiographical essay exploring the rich historical and sociological scholarship on the period in the United States, while framing the documents and illustrations included in the chapter. American Life During the Industrial Age is an ideal companion to undergraduate and graduate courses in United States history, American studies, the history of technology, and the history of culture and society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maurice Lesca, the sour hero of A Man Who Knows, is fifty-seven - older than Bove's other protagonists, not much wiser, no less painfully comical in his failures and confusions. Though he is well educated, financial and amorous miscalculations have leveled him. A failed doctor, he lives in poverty with his widowed sister, whom he sees only at mealtime. Kept afloat by odd handouts from family and connections, Lesca also milks his remaining acquaintances. When he starts visiting a divorcee who runs a dim little bookshop and encourages her to extort more money from her ex-husband, he begins to sow the seeds of dissatisfaction and distrust that will infect his world. But Lesca is a survivor, he will always survive in the modern city. A Man Who Knows was written in 1942 but not published in France until 1985. It is the last of Bove's major novels and the most mature example of his characteristic method.
