Book The Dao of Translation

Download or read book The Dao of Translation written by Douglas Robinson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dao of Translation sets up an East-West dialogue on the nature of language and translation, and specifically on the "unknown forces" that shape the act of translation. To that end it mobilizes two radically different readings of the Daodejing (formerly romanized as the Tao Te Ching): the traditional "mystical" reading according to which the Dao is a mysterious force that cannot be known, and a more recent reading put forward by Sinologists Roger T. Ames and David L. Hall, to the effect that the Dao is simply the way things happen. Key to Ames and Hall’s reading is that what makes the Dao seem both powerful and mysterious is that it channels habit into action—or what the author calls social ecologies, or icoses. The author puts Daoism (and ancient Confucianism) into dialogue with nineteenth-century Western theorists of the sign, Charles Sanders Peirce and Ferdinand de Saussure (and their followers), in order to develop an "icotic" understanding of the tensions between habit and surprise in the activity of translating. The Dao of Translation will interest linguists and translation scholars. This book will also engage researchers of ancient Chinese philosophy and provide Western scholars with a thought-provoking cross-examination of Eastern and Western perspectives.

Book Translator Touretter Avant Garde Translation and the Touretter Sublime

Download or read book Translator Touretter Avant Garde Translation and the Touretter Sublime written by Douglas Robinson and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-06-27 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental translation has been surging in popularity recently—with avant-garde translation at the combative forefront. But how to do it? How to read it? Translator, Touretter plays on the Italian dictum traduttore, traditore—“translator, traitor”—to mobilize the affective intensity of Tourettic tics as a practical guide to making and reading avant-garde translations. It smashes the theoretical literature on the sublime from Longinus to Kant into Motherless Brooklyn, both the 1999 novel by Jonathan Lethem and its 2019 screen adaptation by Edward Norton, in order to generate out of their collision a series of models—visual, aural/oral, and kinesthetic—for avant-garde literary translation.

Book Questions for Translation Studies

Download or read book Questions for Translation Studies written by Douglas Robinson and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2023-08-15 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book in the classical Quaestiones genre, like the Tusculanae Quaestiones (“Tusculan questions”) of Cicero (around 45 BCE) and the Quæstiones disputatæ de Veritate (“disputed questions on truth”) of St. Thomas Aquinas (1256-1259). It seeks to ask seven series of questions about key theoretical approaches to the study of translation: three on equivalence theories (semantic equivalence, dynamic equivalence, and deverbalization), three on Descriptive Translation Studies (norms, Toury’s laws, and the translator’s narratoriality), and one on the translator’s visibility. Each “Question” (chapter) charts a circuitous course through past answers to new questions and new answers, drawing especially on the theoretical traditions of hermeneutics, phenomenology, and 4EA cognitive science. The book will guide both veteran and novice scholars of translation deep into the complexities besetting the seven keywords.

Book The Marine Corps and the State Department

Download or read book The Marine Corps and the State Department written by Leo J. Daugherty III and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2009-04-22 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a complete history of the partnership between the Department of State and the United States Marine Corps. From its formation in 1775, the Corps developed a close working relationship with the diplomatic service of the Continental Congress and later, in 1798, with the newly created United States Department of State. The Marines accompanied U.S. diplomats to France in 1778 and worked closely with the State Department during the Barbary Wars and the opening of China. In 1905, an executive order by Theodore Roosevelt established a Marine Legation Guard, and the Corps played an increasingly important role in embassies across the globe. Today, the war on terrorism highlights this important relationship as Marines guard some of the most dangerous embassies in the world.

Book Best of the Dao of Doug Finding Zen in San Francisco Transit

Download or read book Best of the Dao of Doug Finding Zen in San Francisco Transit written by Douglas Meriwether and published by . This book was released on 2020-03-30 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While staying at home, I thought I would catch up on updating my bestselling book, and create a compilation of all three of my Dao of Doug series: 1. Finding Zen: A Bus Driver's Perspective, 2012. 2. Keeping Zen: A Line Trainer's Guide, 2015; and 3. The Trolleybus of Happy Destiny, 2018. I have streamlined the chapters I borrowed from books 1 and 2, and had fun in adding new content and merging chapters to create this new anthology. This book adds the perspective of eliminating the fare altogether for public transportation--San Francisco has made our main thoroughfare, Market Street, car-free downtown, and many new street improvements are being accelerated by our Mayor. We have a new Director of Transportation who favors bicycles as a means of getting around, and for the first time in my 30 years as a resident of the city by the bay, the greater good for commerce is not being held hostage by the merchants' demand for on-street parking. What's different about Muni, the SFMTA, since book one in 2012? The management at the San Francisco Municipal Railway has purchased new equipment for Light Rail, motor coach, and trolleybus modes. Yard starter delays, coach trades at relief points, and out-of-service road calls from the shop, are now few and far between, especially as contained in book 2 written in 2015. The statistics coming down the pike will show Muni running on time for the first time in my 21 year career as a transit operator! Indeed, there are some silver linings to be found as things quiet down for a bit--instead of becoming fearful by constantly watching headline news. Take a pause, now that you have some time to read at home! I do love photography, so there are now about 30 outlined black and white illustrations littered throughout the book with new photos. If you haven't read any of my work, 'Now is as good a time as any,' as Captain Katheryn Janeway would say about the temporal mechanics lab on Voyager!Whether you're a trekkie or a car person, 'Sit Back and Watch the Show!'Douglas Meriwether a.k.a. Book The Oxford Handbook of Religion and the American News Media

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Religion and the American News Media written by Diane Winston and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-08-29 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether the issue is the rise of religiously inspired terrorism, the importance of faith based NGOs in global relief and development, or campaigning for evangelical voters in the U.S., religion proliferates in our newspapers and magazines, on our radios and televisions, on our computer screens and, increasingly, our mobile devices. Americans who assumed society was becoming more and more secular have been surprised by religions' rising visibility and central role in current events. Yet this is hardly new: the history of American journalism has deep religious roots, and religion has long been part of the news mix. Providing a wide-ranging examination of how religion interacts with the news by applying the insights of history, sociology, and cultural studies to an analysis of media, faith, and the points at which they meet, The Oxford Handbook of Religion and the American News Media is the go-to volume for both secular and religious journalists and journalism educators, scholars in media studies, journalism studies, religious studies, and American studies. Divided into five sections, this handbook explores the historical relationship between religion and journalism in the USA, how religion is covered in different media, how different religions are reported on, the main narratives of religion coverage, and the religious press.

Book Dr and Master Sha Miracle Soul Healer

Download or read book Dr and Master Sha Miracle Soul Healer written by William Gladstone and published by BenBella Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2014-09-02 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What accounts for miraculous healings unexplainable by doctors? Is there a reality to spiritual healings? William Gladstone initially approached Dr. Zhi Gang Sha with some skepticism and disbelief. William believed that there was more to life than the material world, but he knew that the world has many dishonest and self-deceiving mystics. So he decided to explore. William, having studied medical anthropology at Harvard University, had met and worked with some of the greatest spiritual leaders on the planet. He was excited to explore Dr. Sha and his healing practices. William spent weeks with Dr. Sha watching him at work, talking to his students, and observing his healings. He interviewed him at length, asking for specifics and addressing difficult questions. He delved into the science behind Dr. Sha’s work and explored the underlying concepts beneath these “miracle” healings. What William learned amazed him and opened his mind to possibilities he never expected. Dr. Zhi Gang Sha is a medical doctor trained in both Western medicine and traditional Chinese medicine, as well as ancient Chinese sacred energy and spiritual healing. Over the last decade, he has healed hundreds of thousands of individuals with thousands documented and available for viewing on YouTube. How does he do it? Is it the placebo effect or something much more profound? Dr. and Master Sha: Miracle Soul Healer documents the remarkable journey of a world renowned spiritual teacher and master healer who has not only demonstrated the ability to heal but also to teach people to heal themselves. Written for skeptics as well as believers, Dr. and Master Sha: Miracle Soul Healer explores the results and methodology of Dr. Sha’s unique life journey and his stated life mission to serve humanity and the Divine and create a healthier and happier world. This book explores the ultimate mystery of how faith, science, and healing can change your life.
