The Ichthyological Results HE oceanic ichthyological earnings of the 2 expeditions of the ingolf in 1895 and 1896 are in T so far rather considerable as they comprise c. 29 genera and c. 44 species; but they do not com prise many types which are new, viz. Not known or described in our own days or in earlier times. But they number several forms which were not formerly known at our museum or from the northern seas more accessible to us, and there are species among them which have been known hitherto in few specimens only and thus from a very limited study - material. The knowledge of the distribution of several types is therefore now extended, as also the knowledge of their occurrence over an area hitherto little examined, and an addition somewhat considerable is thence procured to the earnings of the earlier expeditions of the challenger, le Talisman, le Travailleur, the Blake, the Alba tross, the Voringen, the Knight Errant, l'hirondelle and the Princesse Alice etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Danish Ingolf Expedition Vol 2 written by Ad S. Jensen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05-05 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Danish Ingolf-Expedition, Vol. 2: 5. Lamellibranchiata (Part I) The Danish Ingolf - Expedition of 1895 - 96 brought home a very considerable material of Mollusca from the waters round the Faeroes, Iceland and South Greenland. The Expedition was planned on the lines of a deep-sea investigation and the greater part of the material collected comes therefore from great depths; of the 144 stations investigated no less than 125 have depths of over 100 fathoms. This material is naturally of great interest; the area investigated was but little known before and an extension of our knowledge of the deep-sea fauna must be classed among the relatively rare occurrences. Whilst working up this material I felt appreciably the lack of information regarding the distribution of the Mollusca in the coastal regions round a great part of the area. This does not apply however to Greenland; on the west coast of that country collections have been made for many years and the material has been worked up by H. J. Posselt, and from the east coast the gatherings of the expeditions of recent years have been worked up by Posselt, R. Héigg, Ad. S. Jensen and J. Grieg. From Iceland and the Faeroes, on the other hand, we had, just as previously for Greenland, but incomplete and short lists of the species and, as these, mainly drawn up by O. A. L. Morch. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Danish Ingolf-Expedition, Vol. 4 The present work forms the first part of a planned revision comprising all the arctic Echinoderms, excepting the Holothurioidea. The basis of the work is formed by the rich material of the Ingolf-Expedition together with the large collections of arctic Echinoderms found at our Zoological Museum from earlier expeditions. To the arctic fauna all the species are referred which are found in the Norwegian Sea, the Greenland Sea, the Denmark Strait, and at the coast of West-Greenland, as also in the White Sea and the Polar Sea with the Bering Strait. Of forms that are only found south of the large ridge between Greenland and Iceland, and between Iceland and the Faroe Islands, only such as have been taken by the Ingolf-Expedition, have been included in the work. During the examination of the material the absolute necessity of taking into consideration also other more or less nearly related forms soon made itself felt. By and by I became aware of the fact that the classification hitherto used with regard to the families treated of here, was quite erroneous, and so I have sought to include into the examination as many forms as possible in order to be able to give the new classification that had to be made, so broad a base as possible. Inspector G. M. R. Leviusen placed the whole rich collection of Echinoids of the museum at my disposal with the greatest readiness; but as far from all species and genera are represented in this collection, I have applied to several foreign naturalists, and have everywhere been met with the most obliging kindness and friendliness, so that I have been enabled to examine almost all known genera and species comprised in the groups treated of here. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Danish Ingolf-Expedition, Vol. 5 The paper on the Actiniaria, of which I now present the first part, has been drawn up according to the same plan as my reports on the Ceriantharia and Zoantharia of the Ingolf-Expedition. The main part of the material examined by myself belongs to the museums in Copenhagen and Stockholm. I have had at my disposal a rather great collection mainly enclosing the forms dredged by Romer and Schaudinn during their journev around the Spitzbergen, and I have also examined smaller collections from the museums in Upsala, Gothenburg, Lund, Christiania, Bergen, Drontheim, Tromso, Francfort on the Main and Petrograd. I beg to express my best thanks to all, who have supported my work through lending of material. The paper on the Ingolf-Actiniaria will be divided into four sections: 1) Description of the species. 2) Survey of the literature with critical notes on the arctic and northern Actiniaria. 3) Distribution of the species. 4) Contribution to the anatomy, genealogy and classification of the Actiniaria. In the present paper I have described all families occurring in the arctic and northern waters excepting the forms which have been referred to the old family Sagartiidae. I have given special attention here to the size and distribution of the nematocysts and spirocysts. As before emphasized by me the stinging capsules are of great importance to the classification. Nearly related genera show great agreement in the appearance and distribution of the nematocysts, and the species are often characterised by the different sizes of these latter, though in many cases the differences are not great. In fact I think that it is impossible to put up a good system of the Actiniaria without considering the stinging capsules. Concerning my statement of the breadth of the stinging capsules I will remark that it is approximate. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Danish Ingolf-Expedition, Vol. 1 According to the Financial Law of 1894 - 95, a sum of 30,000 Kroner was voted on the budget of the Ministry of Public Instruction for preliminary arrangements for a Danish scientific deep-sea expedition by the cruiser Ingolf for exploration of the Arctic seas around Iceland and Greenland, zoological collections being the principal object of the expedition. The expedition was to be made in two voyages of 4 months each, respectively in 1895 and 1896. On the 12th of April 1894, I received a communication from the Ministry of Public Instruction to undertake the necessary arrangements for the expedition together with professor Lutken, and on the 16th of the same month, I received another communication from the Ministry of Naval Affairs to inform me that I was appointed captain of the cruiser Ingolf and Leader of the expedition. The Ministry of Naval Affairs placed the cruiser Ingolf at disposal with officers and crew for the above purpose. Further on negotiations were entered into with the Naval Dockyard, and from these resulted that the principal alterations and fittings that had to be performed were as follows: Building of a deck-house aft with 3 cabins, a large one for the zoologists of the expedition, and two smaller ones, one of which for the physicist and the other for the botanist; fitting of a steam-winch with appertaining reel for the steel-wirerope; a reel for the thermometer-line; a trawl-boom with appurtenances, trawl and dredges as well as weights for soundings. The Ministry of Naval Affairs was not in favour of any alterations being made in the accommodation and fittings below deck, nor were any alterations in this respect necessary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Danish Ingolf-Expedition, Vol. 5: Ctenophora On my asking Sir John Murray, whether it might be possible to get some specimens of these Planarians for examination, he kindly applied to the British Museum about the matter, and I had the pleasure to receive some specimens found among Crustaceans from that station. The examination of these specimens certainly left no doubt that they were really Planarians. The matter is, however, not definitely settled thereby. The specimens examined had no tentacles or processes, so that they could not have been described as having digitiform processes or a superior penis. It seems then not nu reasonable to suppose that there have really been some Coeloplmza among the Planarians, which have, however, become lost on account of the difficulty of preservation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Danish Ingolf-Expedition, Vol. 6: 2. Porifera (Part II.); Desmacidonidae (Pars.) Besides the division into chelae and ancora Levinsen, in the paper quoted, subdivides chela into two forms, chelae palmatae and arcuatae. The former have a straight, or most frequently only slightly curved' shaft, and rather large alae forming together an almost triangular or oval plate, often with a deep notch below; the tooth is often rather broad. In the other form, chelae arcuatae, the shaft is most frequently rather strongly curved, the alae are highly indented below and only attached to the shaft for a comparatively short way, thereby getting a somewhat tooth-like appearance; the tooth is most frequently rather narrow. To be sure, these two forms are not principally different, but differ only in form, and forms may also be met with that may only with difficulty be referred to either of them; but generally they form two well-marked groups, and are also characteristic for certain genera. Therefore there is every reason to keep this division. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Danish Ingolf Expedition Vol 4 written by Danish Ingolf-Expedition and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-22 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Danish Ingolf-Expedition, Vol. 4: Part 2; Contents-Th. Mortensen: Echinoidea (II) In the introduction to his memoir Professor Agassiz states that I show but little appreciation of the work of my predecessors, and De Meijere is included under this accusation, since he agrees with me in regarding the minute microscopical structures of pedicellariae and spicules as of considerable importance for classification. dr. Mortensen, savs Professor Agassiz, practically rejects all the work of his predecessors and challenges it as worthless because it is not based upon his methods for the solution of all Echinological problems. Like all classifications based upon a single character the results obtained culminate in such impossible associations that we are loath to follow his lead. i must protest against the temper and style of criticism adopted by Dr. Mortensen; even if he were right, his assumption of omniscience is offensive to the utmost, and his personal remarks are entirely out of place in a scientific memoir. He concludes these very unrestrained remarks with the following quotation from a newspaper: the results should diminish the patronizing certainty of knowingit all which distinguishes Dr. Mortensen's work, and forbids us, his predecessors, to discuss matters of which we must be in the nature of the case, wholly ignorant. First, as regards the temper and style of my criticism, I must confess my deep regret at having been so unhappy in my mode of expression. I always had and will have a very great respect for the author of that immense work the Revision of Echini, which must always remain the basis for the study of recent Echinoidea, even though its classification may prove untenable and the descriptions of genera and species more or less unsatisfactory. When mv examination of the original material in the British Museum led me to publish several corrections of the same author's Report on the chal lenger-echinoidea, I always endeavoured to give them in the simplest way, stating only the facts without comment or reproach, but, I confess, also without praise. This procedure, dictated though it was by my respect for the author of the revision of Echini, has had the unfortunate result that Pro fessor Agassiz has taken it as an offensive assumption of omniscience; for it is, of course, unreasonable to suppose that the eminent author has been tempted to ascribe offensiveness to the mere demonstra tion of errors. Once again, I repeat my deep regret at this result and can only state thati tried my best to avoid expressions which could be regarded as offensive. If I have been unsuccessful in this respect, that may perhaps be partly ascribed to the circumstance that my work has been translated from Da nish, in which language it was written by me. Probablv I may not be quite aware of the full significance of all the English expressions used, so that more may sometimes have been said than I have mean-t to say. That the errors found out had to be corrected, I think, everybody will agree; in any case I deem it the unconditional duty of every scientist to correct any erroneous statements he detects in literature, to prevent their going on and on in future literature, causing error on error, which will especially be the case with such statements occurring in the works of so famous an authority as Professor Agassiz.
