Book How School Principals Sustain Success over Time

Download or read book How School Principals Sustain Success over Time written by Lejf Moos and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-05-27 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work represents a publishing event in education research. Genuinely groundbreaking, it is the result of longitudinal research from five nations over five years. The authors set themselves an unprecedented task: to analyze how it is that successful school principals sustain positive outcomes over a significant period of time. To find out, they initiated the International Successful School Principal Project (ISSPP) assembling 30 multinational case histories and numerous comparative analyses. In doing so, they recorded fresh perspectives on the influence school principals can have on their schools, the quality of teaching in their classrooms, and student outcomes. Revisiting the subject schools in 2007, they found many principals still in place, having steered their organizations through various minefields of political, governance and educational reform. As the most penetrating longitudinal investigation of the subject, this research has unearthed fascinating new insights into school leadership that add real substance to the sum of our knowledge. It incorporates data from educational systems in Australia, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, England and the USA. One key finding is that while all principals delegate a range of leadership tasks, successful ones distribute responsibility on a case-by-case basis founded on personal assessments of their staff as well as on organizational and policy contexts. The research also demonstrates that successful principals maintain close communication with their staff and the wider school environment, and that they are adaptive, maximizing the opportunities presented by new political contexts and expectations, yet without losing sight of their school’s core moral and ethical principles. The volume’s international thematic analysis has allowed comparative conclusions to be drawn on what the principals do to sustain and foster pedagogical and institutional success.

Book Preparing Principals for a Changing World

Download or read book Preparing Principals for a Changing World written by Linda Darling-Hammond and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-11-04 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preparing Principals for a Changing World provides a hands-on resource for creating and implementing effective policies and programs for developing expert school leaders. Written by acclaimed author and educator Linda Darling-Hammond and experts Debra Meyerson, Michelle LaPointe, and Margaret Terry Orr, this important book examines the characteristics of successful educational leadership programs and offers concrete recommendations to improve programs nationwide. In a study funded by the Wallace Foundation, Darling-Hammond and the team examined eight exemplary principal development programs, as well as state policies and principals' experiences across the country. Using the data from the study, they reveal how successful programs are structured, the skills and knowledge participants gain, and what they are able to do in practice as school leaders as a result. What do these exemplary programs have in common? Aggressive recruitment; close ties with schools in the community; on-the-ground training under the wing of expert principals, and a strong emphasis on the cutting-edge theories of instructional and transformational leadership. In addition to highlighting the programs' similarities, the study also explains the differences among the programs and sheds light on the effectiveness of approaches and models from different states and contexts?East, West, North, and South; urban and rural; pre-service and in-service. The authors analyze program outcomes for principals and their schools, including illustrative case studies and educators' voices on the influence of programs' strategies for recruitment, internships, mentoring, and coursework. The ideas and suggestions outlined in Preparing Principals for a Changing World are presented with the goal of increasing the number of highly qualified, thoughtful, and innovative educational leaders.

Book Daily Practices Elementary Principals Utilize to Increase Student Reading Achievement

Download or read book Daily Practices Elementary Principals Utilize to Increase Student Reading Achievement written by Susan L. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This case study examined three K-5 schools, one 3-5 school, and two K-2 schools that inplemented Michigan's Behavior and Learning Support Initiative (MiBLSi) and showed improvement trends in third grade reading achievement as measured by MEAP results over four years. Each of the six sxhools completed the three years of MIBLSi training and are currently in their fourth, fifth or sixth year since beginning the program. A wealth of studies have been conducted on effective leadership responsibilities for principals (Beck & Murphy, 1996; Blasé & Blasé, 2000; Fullan, 2008b; Lambert, 2003; Lashway, 2002; Marzano, Waters & McNulty, 2005; Stronge, Richard & Catano, 2008). Similarly extensive work has been completed on differentiating between types of change and key factors in leading second-order change and how fidelity is key in implementing school reform. What remains to be studied is how effective principals synthesize this information and translate it into daily practices resulting in increased student reading achievement. Data were collected through interviews with principals, focus groups with teachers and coaches, observations of principals, and document collection. Analysis of the data provided six dominant themes related to the research questions: Behavior/Positive Behavior Support, Visibiluty, Professional Development, Team/Distributed Leadership, Data, and Deliberate/Focused. The dominant themes were cross tabbed with the theoretical frameworks from Marzano et al. (2005) and Fullan (2008a). Connections were made to both Marzano et al.'s Seven Responsibilities of the School Leader for Second-order Change and 21 Responsibilities of the School Leader as well as to four of Fullan's Six Secrets of Change. This study supports previous research and adds to the literature by providing a deeper understanding of how principals translate broad responsibilities and strategies into daily practices, which they utilize to succesfully implement a Michigan school improvement initiative. Principals appear to balance first-and second-order change associated responsibilities with their sense of how staff are experiencing change. They integrate the use of various strategies and behaviors to leverage the impact on the process of implementation.

Book Principals Who Learn

Download or read book Principals Who Learn written by Barbara Kohm and published by ASCD. This book was released on 2007-05-23 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a principal, you know how challenging it is to build a dedicated staff, encourage parental support, help students get excited about learning, and create a working school culture. You know that it takes a more than a few years (and surviving a few school events gone awry) to gain the trust of staff, students, and community. And you probably think that once these elements are in place, you'll be able to relax and let your school run like a well-oiled machine, right? Wrong. Even the most successful principals can become stuck in tired routines that inhibit collaboration and shut down opportunities for learning and change. In Principals Who Learn: Asking the Right Questions, Seeking the Best Solutions, former principals Barbara Kohm and Beverly Nance encourage principals to step out of their comfort zone and pursue learning with their staff. Kohm and Nance give principals the tools to shift from being top-down, authoritarian leaders to becoming open collaborators and continual learners. The authors show principals how to *Learn to listen to all voices. *Turn "bad guys" into allies. *Develop an open and collaborative culture. *Redesign staff meetings for more effectiveness. *Resolve conflicts and solve problems. *Turn mistakes into learning opportunities. Engaging scenarios and reflection questions further help principals re-examine their leadership practices and look at their school from new vantage points. Whether you are a new principal seeking guidance or a seasoned veteran looking to make a change, Principals Who Learn will reinvigorate your work and help you develop and adapt your skills to meet the ever-changing needs of your school. Barbara Kohm worked for 14 years as an elementary school principal and for 10 years as an early childhood program director.
