Book Caribbean Crime and Criminal Justice

Download or read book Caribbean Crime and Criminal Justice written by Katharina J Joosen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-22 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite high crime rates among men in the Caribbean, rising rates of violence against women in the region, and a significant number of Caribbean nationals incarcerated abroad due to drug smuggling, existing research has yet to offer explanations that are tailored to the unique Caribbean societies and the individuals in them. This edited volume adds to the existing body of scientific, empirical and theoretical work on crime (victimization), and criminal justice in the Caribbean, with a specific focus on impacts of post-colonialism and gender. To investigate these impacts on a developing Caribbean criminology, the contributions in this volume focus on how impacts of post-colonialism, associated racial stereotypes, and/or gender throughout the Caribbean impact on (a) types of offending, (b) victimization, and (c) criminal justice system responses and policies. Bringing together a broad range of experts, this book sheds light on key criminological topics in the Caribbean, including victimization, risk factors for offending, subcultures of violence and particularly gendered violence, and the role of motherhood within matrifocal societies. It is essential reading for those engaged with Caribbean - or decolonial - Criminology and those engaged with comparative and international studies in crime and justice more generally.

Book Anthology of an Exiled African Dissident

Download or read book Anthology of an Exiled African Dissident written by Mathew K. Jallow and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2020-05-14 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five junior military officers in the Gambia ousted the government of Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara in 1994. After three decades of relative political stability under a democratically elected government, it was a stunning turn of events – and what followed was two decades of political turmoil, tribalism, massive corruption, disappearances, and forced exile. Mathew K. Jallow, a U.S. citizen who was sentenced to death in absentia for his role in demonstrating against the military dictatorship in his native Gambia, examines his homeland’s history and how a global movement toppled the junta. Jallow captures the slow but steady erosion of human rights, economic plunder, and the collapse of state institutions under the junta’s heavy-handed Machiavellian rule. He also shows how all too often, funds meant to help the continent end up in the bank accounts of politicians, bureaucrats, and the politically connected. With his insightful commentary, the author helps explain why Africa, the wealthiest continent on the planet, remains hopelessly poor. He also takes readers into the minds of Africans, showing a face of Africa that is still a mystery to much of the developed world.

Book Coups from Below

Download or read book Coups from Below written by J. Kandeh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-11-26 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coups from Below represents the first major effort at studying coups carried out by the lumpen section or the subalterns of the armed forces of African states. No previous study has attempted to examine coup making by those in the bottom ranks of the military as a distinct pattern of intervention in African studies. Kandeh examines this pattern as broadly symptomatic of state failure, especially the inability of political leaders to institutionalize power, eradicate mass poverty and promote socioeconomic development.

Book Liberia s First Civil War

Download or read book Liberia s First Civil War written by Edmund Hogan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-13 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive narrative history of Liberia’s first civil war, from its origins in the 1980s right through the conflict and up to the peace agreement and conclusion of hostilities in 1997. The first Liberian Civil War was one of Africa’s most devastating conflicts, claiming the lives of more than 200,000 Liberians, and sending shockwaves across the world. Drawing on a wide range of local and international sources, the book traces the background of the war and its long-term and immediate causes, before analysing the detail of the unfolding conflict, the eventual ceasefire, peace agreement and subsequent elections. In particular, the book shines a light on hitherto unseen first-hand Roman Catholic indigenous and missionary sources, which offer a rare intimacy to the analysis. Detailing the impact of Liberia’s individual warlords and peacemakers, the book also explains the roles played by non-governmental agencies, national, regional and international actors, by the UN, ECOWAS and the Organisation of African Unity, and by nations with special interests and influence, such as the USA and other West African states. This book’s detailed narrative analysis of the Liberian conflict will be an important read for anyone with an interest in the Liberian conflict, including researchers within African studies, political science, contemporary history, international relations, and peace and conflict studies.

Book The New BJP

  • Author : Nalin Mehta
  • Publisher : Taylor & Francis
  • Release : 2024-07-11
  • ISBN : 1040127169
  • Pages : 685 pages

Download or read book The New BJP written by Nalin Mehta and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-07-11 with total page 685 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how the BJP became the world’s largest political party. It goes beyond the usual narrative of the party’s Hindutva politics to explain how, under Narendra Modi, the party reshaped the Indian polity using its own brand of social engineering. According to the findings of this book, this reconstruction was cleverly powered by new caste coalitions, the claim of a new welfare state that focused on marginalised social groups and the making of a women-voter base. Based on data from three unique indices—the Mehta–Singh Social Index, which studies the caste composition of Indian political parties; the Narad Index, which calculates communication patterns across topics and audiences; and PollNiti, which connects and tallies hundreds of political and economic datasets—The New BJP is full of startling insights into the way both the party and the country function. Previously untapped historical records, exclusive interviews with party leaders and comprehensive reportage from across India provide a fresh understanding of the BJP’s growth areas, including the Northeast and south India. A lucid and objective study of the BJP and India today, this book will be useful to researchers, journalists, students, activists and general public alike. Print edition not for sale in South Asia (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka).

Book The Weather Observer s Handbook

Download or read book The Weather Observer s Handbook written by Stephen Burt and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2024-04-30 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook provides a comprehensive, practical, and independent guide to all aspects of making weather observations. The second edition has been fully updated throughout with new material, new instruments and technologies, and the latest reference and research materials. Traditional and modern weather instruments are covered, including how best to choose and to site a weather station, how to get the best out of your equipment, how to store and analyse your records and how to share your observations. The book's emphasis is on modern electronic instruments and automatic weather stations. It provides advice on replacing 'traditional' mercury-based thermometers and barometers with modern digital sensors, following implementation of the UN Minamata Convention outlawing mercury in the environment. The Weather Observer's Handbook will again prove to be an invaluable resource for both amateur observers choosing their first weather instruments and professional observers looking for a comprehensive and up-to-date guide.
