Book excerpt: Michael’s eyes were like two emeralds. Incredibly green, they mirrored something sweet, a tenderness almost incredible, a kind of enchantment capable of enchanting her completely. Carmen couldn’t believe that he was alive, hidden in the ruins of the big house that once had been her family’s, in a remote and mysterious past, in which her mother, Teresa, made sure to protect her from. It was Michael who saved her grandmother, Francesca, when she had fled from the bloody massacres from the war in Italy; it was him who had saved her two children, from complete misery. And it was him who cursed them. Michael was the last of the vampires and only the last witch could make his deepest desire come true: to make a heir, capable of perpetuate the specie and continue his history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where bloodlines converge, the past and present bleed into one. In the dim light of Vardo, Finnmark in 1663, as witches whisper spells from the shadows of their impending doom, a lone guard and a physician plot a dark course that will echo through the ages, threatening the legacy of all who come after. In "Blood Legacy," a gripping tale of dark magic and darker histories unfurls, beginning in the depths of a 17th-century witch trial in Norway. As the townspeople of Vardo call for blood to protect their purity, a hidden plot involving bloodletting unfolds—aimed to weaken the witches but not to kill. The sinister strategy harbors a deeper malice, one that intends to trace witch bloodlines through the ages. Centuries later, this ancient vendetta resurfaces, menacing the life of Tom, a young man unknowingly descended from a line of witches. As Tom grapples with the revelations of his family's past and the burden of a power he never sought, he finds himself at the heart of a battle that straddles the line between historical vendettas and the struggle for personal identity. In his fight against a legacy written in blood, Tom must confront not just his own destiny, but the moral entanglements of carrying a legacy that was never his to choose. Will he reject the darkness woven into his bloodline, or will he redefine what it means to be a descendant of witches? Blood Legacy is the third and final book in the Blood Magick Trilogy. Book excerpt: In 1925 Texans were stunned when a young man’s severed head was found in an abandoned farmhouse near the town of Stephenville. An investigation led to ex-convict F. M. Snow and the mysterious disappearances of his wife and mother-in-law. But this shocking, bloody saga began 50 years earlier . . . Beautiful, vivacious Samantha Jones had a penchant for dangerous men. Her teenage marriage to gambler Amos Smith ended when he was gunned down in a hit orchestrated by his wife’s alleged lover, who was lynched. The widow then married the abusive Bill Olds, who was later arrested for theft, forgery and murder. Violence stalked the next generation when Samantha’s daughter, Maggie Olds, was twice widowed with the brutal murders of her second and fourth husbands. Yet Maggie’s unfortunate choice for a fifth husband, F. M. Snow, led to a gruesome, triple tragedy. In Blood Legacy: The True Story of the Snow Axe Murders, James Pylant delves into family history and sheds new light on a tale of twenty shocking deaths fueled by greed, insanity and revenge. "From hits to lynchings to black widows, this chronicle proves endlessly intriguing." —The Midwest Book Review "Set in the seemingly quiet isolation of small-town Texas, Blood Legacy is a well-written, well-researched true tale with Gothic overtones and more than a hint of Stephen King-style horror." —Carlton Stowers, best-selling and award-winning author

Download or read book The Curse of Cain written by Regina M. Schwartz and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1997-05-15 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Regina Schwartz, we ignore the dark side of the Bible to our peril. The perplexing story of Cain and Abel is emblematic of the tenacious influence of the Bible on secular notions of identity - notions that are all too often violently exclusionary, negatively defining "us" against "them" in ethnic, religious, racial, gender, and nationalistic terms. In this compelling work of cultural and biblical criticism, Schwartz contends that it is the very concept of monotheism and its jealous demand for exclusive allegiance - to one God, one Land, one Nation or one People - that informs the model of collective identity forged in violence, against the other.

Book The Curse of Eve the Wound of the Hero

Download or read book The Curse of Eve the Wound of the Hero written by Peggy McCracken and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2010-11-24 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Curse of Eve, the Wound of the Hero, Peggy McCracken explores the role of blood symbolism in establishing and maintaining the sex-gender systems of medieval culture. Reading a variety of literary texts in relation to historical, medical, and religious discourses about blood, and in the context of anthropological and religious studies, McCracken offers a provocative examination of the ways gendered cultural values were mapped onto blood in the Middle Ages. As McCracken demonstrates, blood is gendered when that of men is prized in stories about battle and that of women is excluded from the public arena in which social and political hierarchies are contested and defined through chivalric contest. In her examination of the conceptualization of familial relationships, she uncovers the privileges that are grounded in gendered definitions of blood relationships. She shows that in narratives about sacrifice a father's relationship to his son is described as a shared blood, whereas texts about women accused of giving birth to monstrous children define the mother's contribution to conception in terms of corrupted, often menstrual blood. Turning to fictional representations of bloody martyrdom and of eucharistic ritual, McCracken juxtaposes the blood of the wounded guardian of the grail with that of Christ and suggests that the blood from the grail king's wound is characterized in opposition to that of women and Jewish men. Drawing on a range of French and other literary texts, McCracken shows how the dominant ideas about blood in medieval culture point to ways of seeing modern values associated with blood in a new light, and how modern representations in turn suggest new perspectives on medieval perceptions.
