Book The Curse of Central Africa Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Curse of Central Africa Classic Reprint written by Guy Burrows and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-24 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Curse of Central Africa Except on rare occasions, to which I shall hereafter very briefly refer, King Leopold, his counsellors, and their friends abroad have deemed it necessary, when criticised, to do little more than pose as much misunderstood and maligned philanthropists. The mission of the State, according to their view, is so high-minded and majestic as to palliate, if not justify, every evil accidental to it, which may from time to time be disclosed. With a loftiness of tone and unctuous insistence upon the purity and unselfishness Of their intentions, which in a less serious matter would be appropriate subject for ridicule, they have claimed, throughout the world, not only an exclusive prerogative Of superiority to adverse comment, but even a prescriptive right to disregard the ordinary obligations of humanity and organised society. Having closed nearly the whole State to all save Officials and dependents, they have deemed themselves in a position to ignore or laugh to scorn all allegations of wrong-doing which may periodically stir the conscience of Belgium or of the other nations primarily responsible. Book Presbyterian Reformers in Central Africa

Download or read book Presbyterian Reformers in Central Africa written by Robert Benedetto and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-04-26 with total page 621 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains 123 documents which illustrate the early history of the American Presbyterian Congo Mission and its struggle for human rights in the Congo from 1890-1918. The documents, many of which have never previously been published, are crucial to a full understanding of both the work of the Presbyterian Mission and its impact on the social, political, and religious life of the Congo. The book is divided into four parts. Part One documents the founding and early history of the Presbyterian Mission from 1890 to 1898. Part Two documents the deterioration of social conditions in the Congo under King Leopold, and the reform campaigns initiated by the American Mission in Britain and the United States. Part Three consists of documents related to the 1909 libel trial of William M. Morrison and William H. Sheppard, the principal leaders of the American Mission. Part Four documents the Mission's reaction to continuing human rights abuses, particularly religious persecution, under Belgian rule to 1918. The documents are annotated and the volume contains an introduction and an index.

Book The Soul of Central Africa

Download or read book The Soul of Central Africa written by John Roscoe and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Soul of Central Africa: A General Account of the Mackie Ethnological Expedition In this book I have aimed at giving a general account of the journeyings of the Mackie Ethnological Expedition in Central Africa and of the lives and ways of the peoples visited, leaving such information as is more of a purely scientific character and not so much of popular interest to be published later. Some of the customs of these tribes are, indeed, of such a nature that they cannot well be described in a book which is intended for the general reader. I have, however, mentioned in passing a few of these customs, without entering into details, in order to let people at home know that there still exist, in this age of enlightenment, human beings .whose lives are spent in such terrible darkness. When I ceased to be a missionary in Africa I was several times asked whether it would not be possible for me to return to the country and complete some of the investigations which I began during my twenty-five years of work there. It was thought that as I had been resident in those parts for so many years, and not only knew the country and the peoples, but had also some knowledge of their languages, their characteristics, and their modes of thought, I was more suited for conducting an ethnological expedition than a younger man, who would take months to acquire the preliminary knowledge that would be necessary before he could start the real work of investigation. Book The Scramble for Art in Central Africa

Download or read book The Scramble for Art in Central Africa written by Enid Schildkrout and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-03-28 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western attitudes to Africa have been influenced to an extraordinary degree by the arts and artefacts that were brought back by the early collectors, exhibited in museums, and celebrated by scholars and artists in the metropolitan centres. The contributors to this volume trace the life history of artefacts that were brought to Europe and America from Congo towards the end of the nineteenth century, and became the subjects of museum displays. They also present fascinating case studies of the pioneering collectors, including such major figures as Frobenius and Torday. They discuss the complex and sensitive issues involved in the business of 'collecting', and show how the collections and exhibitions influenced academic debates about the categories of art and artefact, and the notion of authenticity, and challenged conventional aesthetic values, as modern Western artists began to draw on African models.

Book The Katangese Gendarmes and War in Central Africa

Download or read book The Katangese Gendarmes and War in Central Africa written by Erik Kennes and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2016-07-04 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history of the 1960s unrecognized state’s army and their role in Central Africa’s political and military conflicts. Erik Kennes and Miles Larmer provide a history of the Katangese gendarmes and their largely undocumented role in many of the most important political and military conflicts in Central Africa. Katanga, located in today’s Democratic Republic of Congo, seceded in 1960 as Congo achieved independence, and the gendarmes fought as the unrecognized state’s army during the Congo crisis. Kennes and Larmer explain how the ex-gendarmes, then exiled in Angola, struggled to maintain their national identity and return “home.” They take readers through the complex history of the Katangese and their engagement in regional conflicts and Africa’s Cold War. Kennes and Larmer show how the paths not taken at Africa’s independence persist in contemporary political and military movements and bring new understandings to the challenges that personal and collective identities pose to the relationship between African nation-states and their citizens and subjects. “A fascinating story which is tied to the colonial development of Katanga province, cold war politics in Central Africa, the crisis of the postcolonial state in the Congo, and the interregional politics in the Great Lakes area.” —Georges Nzongola-Ntalaja, University of North Carolina “A major contribution to our understanding of postcolonial politics in Africa more broadly and sheds light on the survival of militias over time and forms of subnationalism emerging from regional consciousness.” —M. Crawford Young, University of Wisconsin, Madison
