Book Babylon Under Western Eyes

Download or read book Babylon Under Western Eyes written by Andrew Scheil and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2016-05-09 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Babylon under Western Eyes examines the mythic legacy of ancient Babylon, the Near Eastern city which has served western culture as a metaphor for power, luxury, and exotic magnificence for more than two thousand years. Sifting through the many references to Babylon in biblical, classical, medieval, and modern texts, Andrew Scheil uses Babylon’s remarkable literary ubiquity as the foundation for a thorough analysis of the dynamics of adaptation and allusion in western literature. Touching on everything from Old English poetry to the contemporary apocalyptic fiction of the “Left Behind” series, Scheil outlines how medieval Christian society and its cultural successors have adopted Babylon as a political metaphor, a degenerate archetype, and a place associated with the sublime. Combining remarkable erudition with a clear and accessible style, Babylon under Western Eyes is the first comprehensive examination of Babylon’s significance within the pantheon of western literature and a testimonial to the continuing influence of biblical, classical, and medieval paradigms in modern culture.

  • Pages : 470 pages

Download or read book Babylon written by Paul Kriwaczek and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2012-03-27 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Civilization was born eight thousand years ago, between the floodplains of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, when migrants from the surrounding mountains and deserts began to create increasingly sophisticated urban societies. In the cities that they built, half of human history took place. In Babylon, Paul Kriwaczek tells the story of Mesopotamia from the earliest settlements seven thousand years ago to the eclipse of Babylon in the sixth century BCE. Bringing the people of this land to life in vibrant detail, the author chronicles the rise and fall of power during this period and explores the political and social systems, as well as the technical and cultural innovations, which made this land extraordinary. At the heart of this book is the story of Babylon, which rose to prominence under the Amorite king Hammurabi from about 1800 BCE. Even as Babylon's fortunes waxed and waned, it never lost its allure as the ancient world's greatest city. Engaging and compelling, Babylon reveals the splendor of the ancient world that laid the foundation for civilization itself.

Book excerpt: "The varied experience of the Caribbean diaspora in Britain, with its difficult and fractured history, is reflected in this distinctive and lively collection. The contributors to Inside Babylon show how employers and police, psychiatrists and welfare services, help to channel black people into residential and occupational ghettoes. Clive Harris, Bob Carter and Shirley Joshi analyse the economic destiny of Afro-Caribbeans in Britain. Going beyond the familiar prisms of race relations and reductionist class analysis they illuminate the radicalizing dynamic of British capitalism in the postwar period. Errol Francis provides a shocking account of the experience of black people at the hands of psychiatrists in Britain. Cecil Gutzmore finds the Notting Hill carnival to be a litmus test of racist formations in both the media and the state, as well as evidence of the resilience of the black community. Amina Mama and Claudette Williams explore the position of women in black communities while Gail Lewis focuses on their characteristic patterns of employment. In a powerful concluding essay Winston James charts the unfolding of a new Afro-Caribbean identity in Britain and debunks the notion that racist structures by themselves create a homogeneous black community."--Publisher.

Book Mystery Babylon The Religion of the Beast

Download or read book Mystery Babylon The Religion of the Beast written by Paul Sides and published by Rav Sha'ul. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the second book of the Original Revelation Series: Mystery Babylon – The Religion of the Beast, we are going to define how sun worship (that originated with the Sumerian Culture some 5,000 years ago) was organized later into a World Religion in Babylon. This religion evolved complete with a well defined Godhead, a day of worship, holy days, a Christ, and sacrifices. This religion, The Mystery Religion of Babylon, is the false religion identified in Scripture. It was this first world religion that was scattered among all nations and cultures at The Tower of Babel when Yahuah confused the languages. We can trace through time and cultures the progression of this religion as humanity flourished on Earth to the present day. Before we can identify what religion today is The Mystery Religion of Babylon, we must first clearly define this world religion as it existed in ancient Babylon. Only then can we compare the religions of today to find an exact match. Then we must compare this false religion to the “Faith” described in The Bible and identify The Truth. That is the purpose of my book series The Original Revelation. Throughout this book series, we carefully examine the evolution of history as man has built upon the corrupted version of the message written in the stars.

Book The Whore of Babylon

    Book Details:
  • Author : Benjamin Breece

  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book The Whore of Babylon written by Benjamin Breece and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2023-11-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This books asks you to set aside your preconceptions and confirmation bias and simply examine what the Scriptures say, especially in prophecy. If it is too difficult for you to reconsider mainstream understandings of what the Scripture says about things such as, the doctrine of the Trinity, the corruption of the Church, whether or not Muhammad was a prophet, etc., then this book is not for you. If you are willing to look and study, then this book can serve as a tool in understanding Bible prophecy. It begins with the Babylonian exile, then continues through the rise of the Persians, Greeks, and Romans, the coming of the Messiah, the rise and corruption of the Church, the rise of Islam, the reemergence of the corrupt Church, the return of Jesus, and the establishment of God's kingdom. The prophecies serve as a warning to those who follow the traditions of the Church instead of Scripture. However, the primary mission of the prophets wasn't to make predictions, but to provide guidance. I believe the prophecies indicate that the church corrupted the teachings of Jesus, and what is preached today bears little resemblance what he preached. The 17th and 18th chapters of Revelation describe it as the Great Whore Babylon, from which this book gets its title. An open-minded study of Revelation also seems to indicate that God gave Muhammad a message to get the Church to repent of its blasphemies and worship only one person as God. It seems to indicate that Protestantism, aided by America, will form an image to the beast (Roman Church) and will join the fight against the followers of God. This book goes into great detail in the prophecies of Daniel and Revelation and the rest of Scripture in order to let the Scripture do the interpreting. One should always let the Bible provide the meanings of symbols and interpret accordingly. I make every effort to only draw interpretations from Scripture, instead of reading interpretations into the text. In fact, I prefer to simply quote the Scripture and let it speak for itself. However, I don't make any kind of claim that the contents of this book were revealed to me directly from God. You should place your faith in the Scriptures and only accept the points that you can clearly see the Scriptures saying. 2nd expanded edition - black and white
