Book The Curse Ends The Story of the 2016 Chicago Cubs

Download or read book The Curse Ends The Story of the 2016 Chicago Cubs written by Jeff Attinella and published by It Had To Be Told Publishing, LLC.. This book was released on 2017-09-28 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up, I was all about sports - football, soccer, baseball, you name it. If it wasn’t sports related, I wasn’t interested. My love for sports is a passion that has shaped my entire life. I am fortunate to play soccer for a living, but it’s bigger than that. My most cherished childhood memories are centered around watching a big game; my relationship with my wife sparked by a mutual love for Penn State football, and my passion for Tampa Bay sports keeps me close to home, even though we’ve moved all over the country. I owe so much of my life to sports. The idea to tell these stories came about after the birth of my daughter, Remy. I wanted to create a vehicle that I could share my love of sports with her, in a way that would hopefully build a bond we’d share forever. Reading together provides a way for parents and their children to share in special moments, but I want these stories to do even more. I want to reach the kids like me, the ones more likely to grab a ball than a book. It is so important for a growing mind to fall in love with reading and I hope these stories can bridge a love for sports with a newfound passion for reading. Mike Pascale (mikepascale.com) is a storyboardist, artist, writer, comic book creator (Bru-Hed), and former award-winning ad agency copywriter/senior art director. Between storyboarding films and drawing this children’s book, he writes and draws the world’s longest-running football webcomic, “Game BUZZ!,” every week at gamebuzzcomic.com. A Californian born and raised in metro Detroit, he had a lot to learn about the Cubs, and found all of it fascinating, frustrating, fun, funny, interesting and incredible. He only hopes he was able to entertain Cubs fans and do justice to their team’s titanic tale—and that we don’t wait another century for their next well-deserved WS win! GO CUBBIES!

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER USA TODAY BESTSELLER Packed with "compelling inside stories" (Chicago Tribune), Teammate is the inspiring memoir from "Grandpa Rossy," the veteran catcher who became the heart and soul of the 2016 Chicago Cubs championship team. In 2016 the Cubs snapped a 108-year curse, winning the World Series in a history-making, seven-game series against the Cleveland Indians. Of the many storylines to Chicago's fairytale season, one stood out: the late-career renaissance of David Ross, the 39-year-old catcher who had played back-up for 13 of his 15 pro seasons. Beyond Ross's remarkably strong play, he became the ultimate positive force in the Cubs locker room, mentoring and motivating his fellow players, some of them nearly twenty years his junior. Thanks to Cubs Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo, "Grandpa Rossy" became a social media sensation. No one, however, could have predicted that Ross's home run in his final career at bat would help seal the Cubs championship. Now, in Teammate, Ross shares the inspiring story of his life in baseball, framed by the events of that unforgettable November night.

Book The End of the Curse

  • Pages : 41 pages

Download or read book The End of the Curse written by William Stanish and published by . This book was released on 2017-08-07 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this unique and engaging book, author William Stanish recounts the drama of Game 7 of the 2016 World Series in which the Chicago Cubs defeated the Cleveland Indians to end a string of more than 100 years without a World Series championship. The account is poetic in nature, after the style of ¿Casey at the Bat,¿ with full-page color photographs illustrating the poem and the highlights of the game. The book is essentially the equivalent of a short story (41 pages), told with poetry and photos, of how the Chicago Cubs broke the ¿curse¿ to win Game 7, one of the most exciting World Series games ever played. The poem, ¿The End of the Curse,¿ is reminiscent of the classic baseball poem, ¿Casey at the Bat,¿ written in 1888 by Ernest Thayer. Not only do the poems have a similar rhythm, but they both focus on the drama of a single baseball game, and they both pay particular attention to the emotions of the spectators and viewers. In ¿The End of the Curse,¿ Stanish tells the story of Game 7 from the point of view of Cubs fans. Like ¿Casey at the Bat,¿ the poem is focused on the ¿home¿ team, with no mention of players on the opposing team. That reflects the notion that the battle against Cleveland was perhaps overshadowed by the battle against the ¿curse,¿ and the fear that fans would, once again, have to ¿wait till next year.¿In addition to covering the on-field drama, the author explores the psychological struggles of the fans as their emotions alternated among confidence, fear, hope, despair, and finally, jubilation. He also takes a fanciful look at the ¿curse¿ itself, and speculates on its own fear, its own nemesis, and what might have contributed to its own demise. The book provides a lasting memento of the Cubs' 2016 World Series championship, with a rich artistic and visual experience. And it provides an opportunity for fans of all ages to relive the events and the emotions of Game 7 with a poetic flair that will never grow old.

It would require a complete team tear-down and turnover, a new farm system foundation of young talent which Epstein and Cubs GM Jed Hoyer gradually added to with gutsy trades and timely signings. After years of rebuilding, Epstein's crystalline vision has been unquestionably realized in the form of one of the most exciting and talented teams in baseball, led by heavyweights like Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant as well as visionaries like manager Joe Maddon. In The Plan, David Kaplan of CSN Chicago and ESPN Radio goes behind the scenes with the Cubs and their front office, walking the steps of their captivating rise to becoming 2016 World Series champions. • Pages : 316 pages

Download or read book Monsters written by Rich Cohen and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2013-10-29 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monsters: The 1985 Chicago Bears and the Wild Heart of Football is the New York Times bestselling gripping account of a once-in-a-lifetime team and their lone Super Bowl season. For Rich Cohen and millions of other fans, the 1985 Chicago Bears were more than a football team: they were the greatest football team ever—a gang of colorful nuts, dancing and pounding their way to victory. They won a Super Bowl and saved a city. It was not just that the Monsters of the Midway won, but how they did it. On offense, there was high-stepping running back Walter Payton and Punky QB Jim McMahon, who had a knack for pissing off Coach Mike Ditka as he made his way to the end zone. On defense, there was the 46: a revolutionary, quarterback-concussing scheme cooked up by Buddy Ryan and ruthlessly implemented by Hall of Famers such as Dan "Danimal" Hampton and "Samurai" Mike Singletary. On the sidelines, in the locker rooms, and in bars, there was the never-ending soap opera: the coach and the quarterback bickering on TV, Ditka and Ryan nearly coming to blows in the Orange Bowl, the players recording the "Super Bowl Shuffle" video the morning after the season's only loss. Cohen tracked down the coaches and players from this iconic team and asked them everything he has always wanted to know: What's it like to win? What's it like to lose? Do you really hate the guys on the other side? Were you ever scared? What do you think as you lie broken on the field? How do you go on after you have lived your dream but life has not ended? The result is Monsters: The 1985 Chicago Bears and the Wild Heart of Football, a portrait not merely of a team but of a city and a game: its history, its future, its fallen men, its immortal heroes. But mostly it's about being a fan—about loving too much. This is a book about America at its most nonsensical, delirious, and joyful.

Book excerpt: Murphy: Billy Goat Curse - Or, how the Chicago Cubs won the 2016 World Series (This short story can also be found in Sports Legends - Or, how the Chicago Cubs won the 2016 World Series) "Them Cubs, they ain't gonna win no more." In 1945, when Frain's army of ushers heard those infamous words, they had no idea that it was Murphy 'the goat' that placed the curse on the Cubs, and not his owner Billy Sianis. By 2016, the Chicago Cubs had not been to a World Series since 1945. Some say it was due to the "Billy Goat Curse." Unbeknownst to them, the only way for the curse to be lifted was for someone to apologize to Murphy for being tossed out of Wrigley Field during the fourth game of the 1945 Fall Classic. Even those who might fantasize over the possibility of the curse being waged over a silly insult to a goat, they had to realize there was no way break the curse. Murphy had been dead for many years, and why would anyone apologize to a dead goat. From somewhere, far beyond this earth, someone took pity on the poor Cub fans plight. In the spirit of "Fair Play" Murphy armed with the power of speech, is forced to leave his place of rest to return to the world of the living. He is to lift the curse in time to allow the Cubs during the Fall Classic. Otherwise, he will be allowed to return to his resting place. Difficulty arises when Murphy declares he will not lift the curse unless he gets an apology. In need of earthly assistance, Murphy goes to the Billy Goat Tavern in Chicago. It is there he meets Daniel, a troubled young man, who just doesn't know how to better himself. Right from the start Murphy and Daniel butts much to the distress of Sara the young man's wife. Thinking, her husband has gone mad, she leaves him alone in hopes he would straighten himself out. She has no idea that Murphy is not an ordinary goat. In the end, both Murphy and Daniel work out their differences in order to arrive at a happy conclusion for all concerned in this delightful tale.
