Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Currency of the Great War Make no mistake. Choice seed like this will germinate in due time - or the very laws of the Universe must come to grief. We see now through a glass darkly - political unrest, and industrial strife, obscure the vision. The state of nervous tension endured for five dread years of awful strain can relax only with time and palliative measures. When the body politic regains health and tone, shame will be the portion of those members who have yielded to the claims of self, and have forgotten the gracious memory, or ignored the honourable wounds Of those who bore the burden of the fray. Book Currency Wars

Download or read book Currency Wars written by James Rickards and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2012-08-28 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1971, President Nixon imposed national price controls and took the United States off the gold standard, an extreme measure intended to end an ongoing currency war that had destroyed faith in the U.S. dollar. Today we are engaged in a new currency war, and this time the consequences will be far worse than those that confronted Nixon. Currency wars are one of the most destructive and feared outcomes in international economics. At best, they offer the sorry spectacle of countries' stealing growth from their trading partners. At worst, they degenerate into sequential bouts of inflation, recession, retaliation, and sometimes actual violence. Left unchecked, the next currency war could lead to a crisis worse than the panic of 2008. Currency wars have happened before-twice in the last century alone-and they always end badly. Time and again, paper currencies have collapsed, assets have been frozen, gold has been confiscated, and capital controls have been imposed. And the next crash is overdue. Recent headlines about the debasement of the dollar, bailouts in Greece and Ireland, and Chinese currency manipulation are all indicators of the growing conflict. As James Rickards argues in Currency Wars, this is more than just a concern for economists and investors. The United States is facing serious threats to its national security, from clandestine gold purchases by China to the hidden agendas of sovereign wealth funds. Greater than any single threat is the very real danger of the collapse of the dollar itself. Baffling to many observers is the rank failure of economists to foresee or prevent the economic catastrophes of recent years. Not only have their theories failed to prevent calamity, they are making the currency wars worse. The U. S. Federal Reserve has engaged in the greatest gamble in the history of finance, a sustained effort to stimulate the economy by printing money on a trillion-dollar scale. Its solutions present hidden new dangers while resolving none of the current dilemmas. While the outcome of the new currency war is not yet certain, some version of the worst-case scenario is almost inevitable if U.S. and world economic leaders fail to learn from the mistakes of their predecessors. Rickards untangles the web of failed paradigms, wishful thinking, and arrogance driving current public policy and points the way toward a more informed and effective course of action.

But it turns out, as everybody of any thought knew it. Must turn out, that the process of contraction is not so easy nor so profitable as the process of in ation. And, although the contraction has not proceeded so far as to reduce the premium on specie, gold being worth as much in paper as it was a year ago. Yet a great outcry is raised that the business of the country is being ruined by the process. The evidence of this being found in falling markets and general stagnation. Book The Rocky Road to the Great War

Download or read book The Rocky Road to the Great War written by Nicholas Murray and published by Potomac Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2013-08-31 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nicholas Murray's The Rocky Road to the Great War examines the evolution of field fortification theory and practice between 1877 and 1914. During this period field fortifications became increasingly important, and their construction evolved from primarily above to below ground. The reasons for these changes are crucial to explaining the landscape of World War I, yet they have remained largely unstudied. The transformation in field fortifications reflected not only the ongoing technological advances but also the changing priorities in the reasons for constructing them, such as preventing desertion, protecting troops, multiplying forces, reinforcing tactical points, providing a secure base, and dominating an area. Field fortification theory, however, did not evolve solely in response to improving firepower or technology. Rather, a combination of those factors and societal ones-for example, the rise of large conscript armies and the increasing participation of citizens rather than subjects-led directly to technical alterations in the actual construction of the fieldworks. These technical developments arose from the second wave of the Industrial Revolution in the late nineteenth century that provided new technologies that increased the firepower of artillery, which in turn drove the transition from above- to belowground field fortification. Based largely on primary sourcesùincluding French, British, Austrian, and American military attache reports-Murray's enlightening study is unique in defining, fully examining, and contextualizing the theories and construction of field fortifications before World War I.

The obligation attached to the Chair of Political Economy, to 'deliver from time to time a public lecture seems onerous to the present occupant of the chair. To one who has principally been employed in cultivating the more abstract portions of the science it is not easy to gather from that field fruits ready for consumption by those who are generally more interested about results than methods. Mapping tensions old and new, he offers an overview to the Great War that is unrivalled in vision or in scope. From detailing the meteoric rise of the bureaucratic classes prior to 1914, to charting the horrors of trench warfare, Ferro travels well beyond the remit of 'historian'. In particular he documents the reactions of the warring countries' socialist and labour organisations to the conflict.By doing so, Ferro has presented us with one of the most significant reappraisals of the Great War ever to be written, one that rightfully takes its place as a Routledge Classic.

Book Some Phases of Finance During the Great War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Some Phases of Finance During the Great War Classic Reprint written by Carl C. Plehn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-21 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Phases of Finance During the Great War In this paper the finances of the great war will be approached from two di erent sides or points of view. From one point of view we shall seek to see a few of the e ects on the money market, on foreign exchange, on bank ing, private investment and commercial credit; from the other we shall view the work of the finance minister in raising the vast sums which are needed to pay for muni tions, for men and for the hire of allies. War finance, however, is not a flat shield with two sides only, one of gold and silver and the other of blood and iron. There are other sides and many angles. But the two mentioned are the only ones we shall have space for, and only small parts of these can be viewed. All through a long, dreary afternoon on the last Friday in July, '1914, a long string of straw 'atted 'arries, mostly in holiday attire, filed slowly into and out of the Bank of England, covertly resenting, but trying to appear unconscious of the jibes and jeers of a crowd of the curious, mostly likewise dressed for the holidays, who had been attracted by the novel sight and who had gathered on the steps of the Royal Exchange across the way. This was the Opening scene of the great drama of a world-wide financial panic. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Cost of the World War to the American People Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Cost of the World War to the American People Classic Reprint written by John Maurice Clark and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-12 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cost of the World War to the American People The need for such an analysis, conceived and executed in the spirit of historical research, was increasingly obvious as the war developed, releasing complex forces of national life not only for the vast process of destruction, but also for the stimulation of new capacities for pro duction. This new economic activity, which under normal conditions of peace might have been a gain to society, and the surprising ca pacity exhibited by the belligerent nations for enduring long and in creasing loss - often while presenting the outward semblance of new prosperity - made necessary a reconsideration of the whole field of war economics. A double obligation was therefore placed upon the Division of Economics and History. It was obliged to concentrate its work upon the problem thus presented, and to study it as a whole; in other words, to apply to it the tests and disciplines of history. J ust as the war itself was a single event, though penetrating by seemingly unconnected ways to the remotest parts of the world, so the analysisof it must be developed according to a plan at once all embracing and yet adjustable to the practical limits of the available data. Book Sterling

Download or read book Sterling written by N. J. Mayhew and published by . This book was released on 2000-05 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Like an underground stream which rarely comes to the surface but which nevertheless irrigates the countryside through which it flows, sterling runs through British history, from the Conquest up to the present day." With this passage, Nicholas Mayhew begins his fascinating look at one of the world?s most storied, influential currencies. Sterling: The History of a Currency is both an absorbing account of the global impact of currency throughout the second millennium and an entertaining primer in financial history and theory. Mayhew traces the path of sterling from its genesis around 1080, during the rule of William the Conqueror, through latter-day struggles to hold its own amidst the global retreat from precious metals standards and the still-developing Euro. Tales of laborers and merchants interweave with those of knights and kings to reveal the social fabric of European society in 1500. Passages from Adam Smith?s 1776 classic The Wealth of Nations outline early but fundamental principles of banking. The dramatic increase in the early nineteenth-century supply of sterling, accompanied by its equally dramatic fall in value, is explored, and the evolution of money from silver and gold through paper, plastic, and electronic impulses is contrasted with social movements that have changed our need for, and relationship with, money. "Sterling, like the English landscape, has evolved over the centuries, reflecting and sometimes leading to changes in the nation?s history, and also generating a sense of unchanging stability of fundamental importance to the national psyche." The history of sterling is nothing less than the history of England and the world. Sterling tells that story with all the vividness and drama which its topic so richly deserves. This profound book also travels far into the heart of mankind?s physical and emotional relationship to currency. Whether you are a student of finance, history, psychology,or sociology, Sterling will leave you with a new appreciation for the central role a currency plays in the development of a nation?and the almost human qualities that currency often assumes as it ages, sometimes gracefully and sometimes fitfully, over the years and centuries. Through the prism of one of the world?s venerated currencies . . . A fascinating portrait of world history War . . . peace . . . prosperity . . . famine . . . throughout each of these historical phenomena, the common denominator is mankind?and money. Sterling: The History of a Currency traces the incredible history of England and the world over the past centuries through the ebb and flow of its chief currency, the pound sterling. From the eleventh-century Domesday Book, with its surprisingly accurate accounting of the population and wealth of England, to the final days of the twentieth century, Sterling describes how England and its omnipresent standard of currency first ruled the globe, then struggled to find a place in an expanding, increasingly complex environment. Detailed photographs strikingly illustrate the lineage of English money over the past century while historical references, quotes, facts, and tales vividly portray the centuries-long partnership of England and sterling in the formation of a culture. More than a simple recitation of economic facts and figures, Sterling represents a vibrant, lifelike portrait of the people and events that make up one of history?s great nations?and the currency that was instrumental in its formation. As workers and farmers toiled to acquire it, merchants and landowners struggled to amass it, and kings and financiers conspired to control it, sterling wrote its own tale. It is a tale of money, power, and life itself, and one that bears scrutiny as we begin our new century.

Book The Origins of the First World War

Download or read book The Origins of the First World War written by James Joll and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Joll's study is not simply another narrative, retracing the powder trail that was finally ignited at Sarajevo. It is an ambitious and wide-ranging analysis of the historical forces at work in the Europe of 1914, and the very different ways in which historians have subsequently attempted to understand them. The importance of the theme, the breadth and sympathy of James Joll's scholarship, and the clarity of his exposition, have all contributed to the spectacular success of the book since its first appearance in 1984. Revised by Gordon Martel, this new 3rd edition accommodates recent research and an expanded further reading section.
