Book The Curiosities of Industry and the Applied Sciences Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Curiosities of Industry and the Applied Sciences Classic Reprint written by George Dodd and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Curiosities of Industry and the Applied Sciences A few words will explain the object of the present volume. It is not intended to treat systematically of the relations which are borne by Manufacturing Industry to Natural Productions, to Mechanical and Chemical Science, to the Fine Arts, to Commercial and International Tariffs, or to Social and Co-operative Arrangements. Nor is it intended to describe in technical form the processes and the localities of our great departments of manufacture. The author of this volume gave a popular view of those processes and localities, in a series of "Supplements" to the Penny Magazine, in the years 1841-2-3-4; the substance of which was afterwards embodied in six small volumes, under the title of British Manufactures. The title 'Curiosities of Industry' will pretty clearly explain itself. Many processes are curious without being novel; many are both novel and curious; many reveal to us the store of strange and valuable things which science presents to those who know how to apply it in aid of industry; many arise out of the discovery of new materials; and many more by new applications of old materials. Of all such are these 'Curiosities' composed. Each paper or essay being complete in itself, they may be arranged in any order at pleasure. In this volume they are placed in the order of publication. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Science and Industry There is a widespread misapprehension among laymen in regard to the nature of science. They have, as a general rule, an impression that there are two types of science. On the one hand they believe that pure science was invented for the diversion of university professors and theorists in general. It has, they assume, no point of contact with, or influence on, everyday life, either immediate or remote. On the other hand they conceive of applied science as a disconnected something which dispenses with the subtleties of, pure science and takes a short cut to results. The director of a big commercial laboratory across the line told me that the short-cut men had cost the Government of the United States millions of dollars. There is, as a matter of fact, no other science than pure science and applied science is simply that science applied. Book Science the Endless Frontier

Download or read book Science the Endless Frontier written by Vannevar Bush and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic case for why government must support science—with a new essay by physicist and former congressman Rush Holt on what democracy needs from science today Science, the Endless Frontier is recognized as the landmark argument for the essential role of science in society and government’s responsibility to support scientific endeavors. First issued when Vannevar Bush was the director of the US Office of Scientific Research and Development during the Second World War, this classic remains vital in making the case that scientific progress is necessary to a nation’s health, security, and prosperity. Bush’s vision set the course for US science policy for more than half a century, building the world’s most productive scientific enterprise. Today, amid a changing funding landscape and challenges to science’s very credibility, Science, the Endless Frontier resonates as a powerful reminder that scientific progress and public well-being alike depend on the successful symbiosis between science and government. This timely new edition presents this iconic text alongside a new companion essay from scientist and former congressman Rush Holt, who offers a brief introduction and consideration of what society needs most from science now. Reflecting on the report’s legacy and relevance along with its limitations, Holt contends that the public’s ability to cope with today’s issues—such as public health, the changing climate and environment, and challenging technologies in modern society—requires a more capacious understanding of what science can contribute. Holt considers how scientists should think of their obligation to society and what the public should demand from science, and he calls for a renewed understanding of science’s value for democracy and society at large. A touchstone for concerned citizens, scientists, and policymakers, Science, the Endless Frontier endures as a passionate articulation of the power and potential of science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Industry IN this book I have attempted to meet the request of the Editors that I should describe the recent changes which have given us the present condition of the working classes. It has only been possible to give an outline of events, and to suggest the principles which seem to me to be involved. In view of the fact that a volume has already been con tributed to this series on Socialism, I have stopped on the threshold of that subject, and have tried to make this study a. Way of ap proach to that larger question. I shall be glad if I have succeeded in giving a survey of the field which will incite to further exploration, and help to explain the unrest which is so great a feature of this critical time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of Invention: Vignettes From the Annals of Industry and Science The history of Invention is much more than a question of mere machinery, or of material progress. The life-stories of the inventors are alive with light and shadow. Struggles with poverty, hopes long deferred, the sudden flow of dramatic incident which precedes discovery, the realisation of a life's dream, the acquisition of fame and riches, form parts of the story just as much as the conquest over the forces of Nature, and the working out of problems.
