Download or read book The Culture of Simplicity Classic Reprint written by Malcolm James Mcleod and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Culture of Simplicity These pages have been written in the interims of a busy life; the burden of their intent being to emphasize a saying of James Russell Lowell's that the highest outcome of culture is simplicity. Much has been written of late concerning simplicity and simple living. It is the controlling note all but drowned, yet clamouring for a bear ing, in a materialistic age. And we believe it to be a spiritual note too. Such at least we have regarded it in these chapters. The message of the Eternal is ever the same, but the language in which it is expressed varies with the type and temperament of the peo ple to whom it comes; and to an age steeped in mammonism and worship of the flesh, the evangel calling for a voice and a deliverance is that simplicity is culture; simplicity is spirituality; simplicity is power; the spir itual is the solution of everything. Back to culture then, the culture of the cross, the culture that is towards the Christ. This is the gospel for an age of unrest. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Value of Simplicity The thesis which I advance is this. Human beings of normal character and condition are satisfied only with enjoyments which exercise their best faculties, to wit, the perception of beauty and harmony, and of the high ideals of thought and conduct to which humanity is able to aspire. To these noble satisfactions luxury pre sents a bar. It will have us occupied with itself, and so diverts our attention from what we should most covet to enjoy. Let us take for an instance the pleasure which good music ought to give. This pleasure is of so high a grade that one should bring to it calm thought and concentrated attention. Download or read book The Simple Life written by David E. Shi and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking across three centuries of want and prosperity, war and peace, this work introduces a cast of practitioners and proponents of the simple life, among them Thomas Jefferson, Scott and Helen Nearing, Jimmy Carter and Jane Addams. It finds that nothing is simple about our mercurial devotion to the ideal of plain living and high thinking. Though we may hedge a bit in practice and are now and then driven by motives no deeper than nostalgia, this work stresses that the diverse efforts to avoid anxious social striving and compulsive materialism have been essential to the nation's spiritual health.

Book Simulation and Its Discontents

Download or read book Simulation and Its Discontents written by Sherry Turkle and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2009-04-17 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the simulation and visualization technologies so pervasive in science, engineering, and design have changed our way of seeing the world. Over the past twenty years, the technologies of simulation and visualization have changed our ways of looking at the world. In Simulation and Its Discontents, Sherry Turkle examines the now dominant medium of our working lives and finds that simulation has become its own sensibility. We hear it in Turkle's description of architecture students who no longer design with a pencil, of science and engineering students who admit that computer models seem more “real” than experiments in physical laboratories. Echoing architect Louis Kahn's famous question, “What does a brick want?”, Turkle asks, “What does simulation want?” Simulations want, even demand, immersion, and the benefits are clear. Architects create buildings unimaginable before virtual design; scientists determine the structure of molecules by manipulating them in virtual space; physicians practice anatomy on digitized humans. But immersed in simulation, we are vulnerable. There are losses as well as gains. Older scientists describe a younger generation as “drunk with code.” Young scientists, engineers, and designers, full citizens of the virtual, scramble to capture their mentors' tacit knowledge of buildings and bodies. From both sides of a generational divide, there is anxiety that in simulation, something important is slipping away. Turkle's examination of simulation over the past twenty years is followed by four in-depth investigations of contemporary simulation culture: space exploration, oceanography, architecture, and biology.

Book The Simple Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Simple Life Classic Reprint written by Charles Wagner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Simple Life Our author, however, says that to aspire to lead a simple life is, properly speaking, to aspire to fulfill the highest human destiny; and he doubts whether such a life should have disappeared from the scope of present day reality; whether simplicity is to be renounced as an impossible ideal, whether it does depend on particular economic and social conditions or, as he declares, upon the soul and the spirit. Instead of looking towards the ideal of simplicity in life with impotent regret, he asserts that we can make it the object of our resolution, the aim of our practical energy. He affirms that every move ment that humanity has made towards enlighten ment and justice, is in reality a movement towards greater simplicity of life.
